Class 4A Notebook (11/19) - Round 2 Recap

By DragonFire - District 1 We start with District 1, but they were the last game played in the state this week for any class. With the snow days earlier in the week, it was agree to delay the #8 Hopkinsville/#7 Madisonville-North Hopkins game until mid-day on Saturday. Tens of Tiger fans lined the home side. Unlike the first matchup where Madisonville got out to a great start, it was the Tigers who jumped out first with a long and sloooow march up the field, draining nearly 7 minutes on the game’s opening drive to take a 7-0 lead. The Tigers briefly held a 14-0 lead before settling into a 14-7... Read More → 2nd Region Boys Basketball Preview

By silo11 - Defending Region 2 Champions: Madisonville North-Hopkins Last Year was the first year in a very long time a team from District 8 didn’t win the Region 2 Championship. This will be the first time in a long time that a District 8 team didn’t sit a top the preseason standings. In fact, it has been a while since there was so much separation between first place and second place. Madisonville North-Hopkins is the team to beat hands down this year. If they do not win the Region 2 championship, it will be considered a big upset. After that it gets really tricky on the rankings. Some... Read More →

Class 6A Notebook (11/18): Regional Championships

By Tigerpride94 - 6A Notebook: Regional Championships After two rounds of District play, we are down to 8 teams with the four winners of this round being regional champions. Four of the top 5 teams remain with #1 Male, #2 Trinity, #4 North Hardin, and #5 St. Xavier. No surprise that Male and Trinity are still alive as they have dominated this decade with winning multiple championships. North Hardin looks to be the best chance for an outside of Jefferson County team to win a championship. Oldham County in their first year of 6A makes it to the regional round. #9 Simon Kenton has played well of late which now... Read More →

Class 5A Notebook (11/17): The champ gets KO'd and Cinderella arrives at the ball

By DevilMayCare - The new playoff format ensured that, one way or another, we'd be saying goodbye to a couple of state powers earlier than usual in the postseason. Scott County did what most expected and played better football in their rematch with Frederick Douglass, but were ultimately outclassed by a superior opponent. And South Warren couldn't overcome its offensive struggles against Bowling Green this season, suffering their earliest playoff exit in eight years. That game was one of four that went down to the wire. Before casting our gaze upon the quarterfinals, let's take a look back at the events of... Read More →

3A Notebook: Familiarity Breeds Humiliation in Half Dozen Round Two Romps

By gchs_uk9 - District Championship Week Turns into Blowout Friday When the KHSAA implemented intra-district postseason play in 2019 it was guaranteed that the first two rounds would be rematches of regular season games. Six of the eight district championship games played Friday pitted a one seed versus a two, and the two three seeds that won first round games (Union County and Christian Academy of Louisville) were hardly surprises. If you expected round two to be more competitive that the regular season game, you had another thing coming. Average margin of victory in the first meetings between... By ApolloFan98 - 1. Owensboro Red Devils Coach: Rod Drake -- Last Year: 23-8 - 3rd Region & 9th District Champions Key Losses: Darion Wimsatt 19 ppg Outlook: The Red Devils defeated Breckenridge County in overtime, to win the 3rd Region title last season. An injury to their best player, Darion Wimsatt may have cost them in the Sweet 16, but the Devils are primed for another run in 2020. They return a ton of size in their front court in Gavin Wimsatt (10 ppg / 7 rpg), Jaden Greathouse ( 9ppg / 6 rpg) and Issac Humphrey. They also return Amari Robinson Wales, who is coming of a big sophomore season. Expect... Read More →

6A Notebook: District Championships

By Tigerpride94 - 6A Notebook: District Championships We are now into the second round of the playoffs where the remaining teams will play for their district championship. The first round was dominated by the higher seeds winning in every case but one. The lone lower seed winning was Dixie Heights over Ryle and that was a 2 vs 3 matchup. The second round has some better matchups that we’ll look at. District 1 #1 McCracken County (8-3) is coming off a great performance in all phases with a 57-0 victory over #4 Apollo (4-7). #2 Henderson County (8-3) defeated #3 Daviess County 36-16 with a good... By ColonelMike - Region 8 2019-20 Boy’s Basketball Preview By Colonelmike In 2019, “the streak” came to an end in the 8th Region. Since re-districting occurred before the 2006 region tournament, the 8th Region title has been the exclusive property of the “South End” – namely, the two southernmost districts, district 29 and district 30. For thirteen consecutive seasons, five teams from those two districts monopolized the titles, with Oldham County claiming 4 region championships, followed by South Oldham (3), Shelby County (3), Collins (2), and Anderson County (1). The last time the 31st or the... Read More → 1st Region Boys Basketball Preview

By silo11 - Defending Region 1 Champions: Mayfield Cardinals Region 1 last year had some very entertaining movement throughout the season. Lots of talent throughout the region made for some very exciting games. Mayfield was the preseason favorite but dropped games in the early going. McCracken showed they were a tremendous force and opened a lot of eyes on how quickly they can rebuild. Marshall County looked like it would have a great team, but Harmon was ruled ineligible and the season didn’t turn out like people had hoped. Graves County had one of their most talented teams and had a fantastic... Read More →

Bluegrasspreps Mr. Football Watchlist (11/13)

By DevilMayCare - Front Runners Beau Allen (QB, Lexington Catholic) Round 1: Allen guided the Knights past Bourbon County, 43-23, with 244 yards of total offense and five touchdowns - three passing, two rushing. Attention quickly shifts to Round 2 at Boyle County. For the future Kentucky Wildcat, all roads lead through Danville. His status as one of the state's best quarterback prospects in recent memory has long been secured, but the Rebels have proven themselves a persistent barrier between him and a deep playoff run. For all of his accolades, he has yet to advance beyond a region final. This Friday... Read More →

Class 1A Notebook - Playoff Round 1 Review

By Voice of Reason - District 1 (1) Crittenden County 46 - (4) Caverna 0 Predicted score: Crittenden County 56 Caverna 0 As expected, Crittenden County rolls over Caverna in round 1. One key item for discussion is the Rockets QB situation. Sophomore Luke Crider has taken over now as the starting QB. Crider entered the game against Fulton County on October 18 and led Crittenden County to three second half TD’s in a come from behind win. Crider was 10/17, 166 yards and 4 TD passes in the round 1 win over Caverna. (2) Russellville 32 – (3) Fulton County 27 Predicted score: Russellville 28 Fulton County 27 Read More → 9th Region Boys Basketball Preview

By PP1 - Preamble: I remember eight months ago, when I was sitting in NKU’s gym waiting for the 9th region tournament, I thought to myself “Man, it’s going to be 9 months before I get to sit in a high school gym.” Well as the leaves are changing, the pumpkin spice latte is back at Starbucks, and the football playoffs begin it is clear to me that basketball season is on the horizon. The best three months of the year will soon be here and I look forward to covering the best region in the state. I anticipate meeting some of you fine people and debating teams, players, and officials. The pre-season... Read More →

Class 4A Notebook (11/11) - Round 1 Recap

By DragonFire - District 1 The most competitive 4A district unsurprisingly produced the most competitive games in 4A. The #8 Hopkinsville/Calloway County game was not expected to be one of those given the Tigers shut out the Lakers 43-0 in their regular season meeting. I was confident enough that I essentially called it a bye. But hats off to Calloway County, as they battled throughout. Calloway County held leads of 7-0 in the second and 17-14 in the third, but they fell just short in a 28-20 result. Bland threw for 226 and ran for 113 for Hopkinsville. Meanwhile, #10 Logan County hosted #7... Read More → 4th Region Boys Basketball Preview

By DragonFire - Another season, another state semifinal run from a team in the 4th Region. For the second straight year, Warren Central made the run to the final four of the Sweet 16, making it five of the last six seasons the region’s representative made it that far. Six teams reached the 20 win plateau a season ago, though half the region also finished with losing records. Several teams return 4 or more starters, which sets the table for a highly competitive season. Of course, it wouldn’t be the 4th Region without the 14th District serving as favorites, as their state-longest streak is now at 18... Read More →

Class 5A Notebook: Reflecting back, looking ahead

By DevilMayCare - District 1 Round 1 Recap - No surprises were expected in the far reaches of Kentucky's westernmost 5A district. Owensboro got the ball rolling with a 40-0 rout of Muhlenberg County, and Graves County followed suit with a 28-0 shutout of Grayson County. Gavin Wimsatt threw for 236 yards and two touchdowns for the Red Devils, who secured their sixth ten (10) win season in the last seven years. Graves County got big nights from QB John Brown (231 yards passing/3 TDs) and Clint McKee (227 yards from scrimmage/3 TDs) to carry the Eagles through to the second round. District 1... Read More →
