Sweet 16 Preview: Lexington Catholic Knights

By JokersWild24 - The Knights are a familiar face and will be in their own backyard for the tournament. Still, it's been a few years since Coach Salsman's club has been playing this late in the postseason, but make no mistake, the Knights are capable. Leading the way is senior wing Tanner Johnson. While Johnson has been asked to play inside a little more this year, probably by necessity, he's used it as an opportunity to expand his game. He'll lead the way for the Knights, but I wonder about whether he'll be able to show the kind of consistency needed to make a deep run. Of late, teams like Woodford County... Read More →

Sweet 16 Preview: Johnson Central Golden Eagles

By 15th Region - Overview: Three time defending Champion Johnson Central entered the season as the consensus number 1 team in the 15th Region, but faced many obstacles on the way to their 4th straight crown. In the third game of the season, JC saw eventual 15th Region POY Kyle Gullett go down early in the 2nd quarter with an ankle injury (an injury that would sideline Gullett for 8 games – JC was 2-6 in those games). This was devastating news as the Head Coach Tommy McKenzie had already lost 3 time 15th Region All-Tournament Team Member Truman Salyer to a season ending knee injury suffered during football... Sweet 16 Preview: Williamsburg Yellow Jackets

By Les - The Williamsburg Yellow Jackets will be participating in their first Sweet Sixteen in 69 years after they dethroned two-time defending 13th Region champion Clay County last week, 70-61, at The Arena. It's been a magical season for Patrick Robinson's squad, who will enter the state tournament with the lowest enrollment (229) among participating schools. Williamsburg started the season off a couple of weeks later than most schools due to its football team's success, but it didn't seem to phase the senior-laden team, who began the season with an impressive 17-0 record. The Yellow Jackets... Read More →

Who Benefits Most From Delays?

By JokersWild24 - Lots of ways you can go with this one. I think the delays favor teams who are well coached because there's more prep time for the first game, then a quicker turnaround after each night. Same goes for teams who are more athletic. Different on bodies playing 3 games in 3 days, at least of that intensity level, and it's going to favor the kids who played in similar circumstances in big AAU events over the summer. You can go on the other side of the coin at the same time too. One of the things that got me thinking about this thread and topic was a first round district game between... Read More →

13th Region Tournament Preview

By Les - For the past two seasons, the Clay County Tigers have owned 13th Region competition, winning the 13th Region Tournament crown the past two years, and now they're going for their third title in a row. The last time a team accomplished the feat was when the South Laurel Cardinals did it in 2006, 07 and 08. So can the the Tigers three-peat? "We're going to do what we do best — take one game at a time," Clay County coach Robert Marcum said. "The bracket we are in is very loaded, so the best thing we can do is to take things one game at a time." Knox Central, Williamsburg and Barbourville are... Read More →

"The right way"

By PurplePride92 - I see this said all of the time in regards to AAU but I don't know what it means. When someone says an AAU program "does things the right way" what does that mean to you? I feel like this has many different meanings to people and I feel like people throw shade at AAU programs that don't do things the way they think they should. I have all kinds of opinions on AAU and the whole structure of it and all of the different programs involved in it. At the end of the day, each family has to find a fit that is right for them and their kid. Sometimes even the kids don't know what the right fit is... Read More →

Defending Ball Screens

By JokersWild24 - Kind of a coaching philosophy question, but how do you do it if you have your way? Do you go over and only help off when absolutely necessary (my preference)? Do you hedge and show help, then let your guy fighting through the screen recover (I don't like it, because if he can't get through the screen, that says something about him defensively, but is it a necessary evil)? Do you switch, especially if the other team is quicker than you? If you switch, do you switch most everyone (unless it means an awful mismatch) or do you have rules on who you switch? If you have rules, what do... Read More →

2015 5th Region Tournament Preview

By All State Baseball - The 5th Region could be one of the best regions in Kentucky, no clear cut favorite and several teams close behind the favorites. This one should be a dozy of a region tournament. Favorites: Taylor County (25-4): The Cardinals have been the top team in the 5th region and have won 9 straight. Quention Goodin will be the player that leads the Cardinals. Qeuntin comes into the regional tournament averaging 21.7 PPG. Taylor County has two more players averaging double figures in scoring, Brandon Berry (15.9) and David Sloan (12.7) Read More →

2015 3rd Region Tournament Preview

The 3rd region will be one of the best regional tournaments across the state as there is no favorite.
