Class 2A Notebook 10/1- Off or On Display

By ATLCat - Of BYES and WINS As the leaves change and the District Schedule gets deeper, you start to see teams take strategically set BYE weeks to rest up for the stretch run. Often times this week off will coincide with Fall break giving the kids and coaching staff a much deserved reprieve from the grind of the season. Of the Top 15 teams in Class 2A, five of those teams will choose to take a Friday off this week including Mayfield, Glasgow, LCA, Walton-Verona, and Murray. With so many of the top teams not scheduled to play, along with the mandatory nature that District Scheduling brings, it is... Read More →

BluegrassPreps Football Rankings (10/1)

By Ram - Class 1A As folks began wondering if the gap was closing on Beechwood at the top of Class 1A, the Tigers decided to make a statement by knocking off a ranked 6A Simon Kenton in a big signature victory. Another team making their presence known was Raceland, specifically the Raceland defense, which won a meat grinder game against Somerset. Pikeville also got a huge win by outlasting Hazard. The Bulldogs must regroup against a Phelps team desperate to shock the state. Two huge games also stand out at the back of the Top 10. Holy Cross and Lynn Camp each have monster district clashes that they... Read More →

6A Notebook (10/1): Mind Boggling

By Bac2369 - Yet again, Class 6A continues to be wild and puzzling. District play has started and still the same puzzling and mind boggling things have happened. If your wondering what I’m talking about, then I will just get right into it. The #2 Scott County Cardinals hosted the Henry Clay Blue Devils for a district matchup. Many thought this would be a running clock win for Scott County, but man, were they fooled. Henry Clay would came out and shocked the 6A world with not just a win, but a convincing 51-27 victory. DJ Vanhorn and Raymond Jackson had big games for Henry Clay. DJ Vanhorn threw for 225... Read More →

Western Kentucky Power Rankings - September 30, 2018

By Purple88 - BluegrassPreps 2018 Western Kentucky Power Rankings – Week 7 Edition Concerning the top story line for this week, ALL Teams in the Top 20 win in Week 7 with the exception of 3 teams (all outside the Top 10) who all lose to more highly ranked teams. And all games are pretty much BLOWOUTS with the exception of Madisonville’s 14-0 win over depleted Hopkinsville. Is this just that time of year where teams play lesser district foes or did we just hit a sweet spot for our teams? Maybe a little of both! Here’s to a great ending to the regular season and a successful District Campaign to all... Read More →

Class 5A Notebook (9/30): The Calm Before the Storm

By DevilMayCare - Like most weekends this season in 5A, this past Friday night was rather uneventful. Save for Owensboro/Christian County (which I'll touch on below), there was no movement in the top 10. Covington Catholic, Highlands, and Pulaski County all had the week off. And the teams that did play, won their games by an average margin of 40 points. Week after week, this has largely been the case. Some of the top teams have faced common opponents, but not one another. And a few of them have seen their schedules littered with “soft touches” in recent weeks. There are some mysteries to be solved in regards... Read More →

3A Notebook: Making Time For Those You Love

By gchs_uk9 - On August 17, 1984 I went to my first ever high school football game. At least I think so - my mother says me and my sister (we're twins) were three when we first went, so I'm guessing that date and game is close to correct. I obviously don't recall any details from that night but I've been told and have seen pictures that I wore a plastic football helmet and wouldn't take it off while my sister was in a cheerleading uniform. That night started a family tradition that in some ways continues to this very day. On Friday nights, our family went to watch football. At nearly every Garrard... Read More →

Bluegrasspreps' Eastern Kentucky Power Rankings 9-29

By ATLCat - 1. Johnson Central Golden Eagles (4A, 5-1)- The Golden Eagles flew in a gentle breeze by dusting off East Carter. Greenup County is not a pushover, but Johnson Central should have no issue. 2. Ashland Tomcats (4A, 7-0)- The Tomcats get the slight bump thanks to the value of their win over Raceland looking better and better each week. After pounding Boyd County expect the same result against East Carter. 3. Belfry Pirates (3A, 5-1)- Belfry had little resistance from Floyd Central and now step back out of the District for the always stout Knights from Cabell Midland, WV. Pirates will get... Read More →

Northern Kentucky Power Rankings: 09-27-18

By Colonels_Wear_Blue - 1) 5A Covington Catholic (5-0) – The Colonels had to dig down and show their mettle after the 1st quarter against Beechwood, and they faced a similar situation, heading into halftime tied at 14 with OH-DIII St. Francis DeSales (3-2) before pulling ahead in the second half to win 35-14 up in Columbus. RB Casey McGinness had another great performance, rushing for 194yds and 2 TDs, and QB Caleb Jacob was 8-17 passing for 88yds and 1 TD. WR Jack Coldiron led the receiving corps with 56yds receiving and 1 TD, and the other TD’s were scored on short runs by Jacob and RB Daniel Felix. McGinness also... Read More →

1A Notebook 9/25 - Prospecting

By Voice of Reason - This week looks like a good week to do some sifting and sorting on our top teams and try to see what each team’s prospects are in the post season. District play will be in full force next week. This week the top teams have put some out of district challenges on their schedules. Let’s size up the top teams in 1A, this week’s challenge, where they stand and where it looks like they are headed. 1. Beechwood – This week the top ranked Tigers are at 6A #8 Simon Kenton. Any time a 1A team steps into the 6A top ten for a game it is a big challenge. Beechwood went toe to toe with Simon Kenton last... Read More →

Class 4A Notebook (9/25): A Double Rainbow

By DragonFire - I'm fond of using the double rainbow expression for something you're unlikely to see. In 4A, no teams losing in the top ten is essentially like seeing a double rainbow. It is super, super rare, but there it was last week, in all its glory. The result of that was the exact same top ten this week as the week before. In fact, the teams in the top ten didn't just win, they dominated. Nine games decided by an average of 33.77 PPG, which included a game called early in #8 Moore's 27-0 win over Valley. Only #7 Franklin County's district tilt at Shelby County provided any drama for a top... Read More →

6A Notebook 9/24: Midterms

By Bac2369 - We have reached the halfway point of the high school football season and the midterm grades are out. It has really been a very puzzling start in Class 6A football. Back in August, few would have believed that Trinity would be 1-5 at the half point of the season. We also had not just one, but two 6A schools lose to a 2A team. This week had two very good ranked matchups. We will start at the top, when #1 Male traveled to take on #6 Butler. Male showed exactly why they are the #1 in 6A, getting the 30-12 win. This game was very interesting for 3 quarters. Male played without two defensive... Read More →

Western Kentucky Power Rankings - September 24, 2018

By Purple88 - BluegrassPreps 2018 Western Kentucky Power Rankings – Week 6 Edition Concerning the top story line for this week, IS YOUR GLASS HALF EMPTY OR HALF FULL??? Our teams are either at the halfway point in the season or just past! So is your team doing pretty well (Half Full) or are they a little less than was to be desired (Get me a new Dixie Cup!!!)? I “think” there are a lot of WKY teams that are either on course or ahead of course for the year! Of course there are some misfiring teams and a lot of those have to thank tough schedules and player injuries!!! Here’s to a great ending to the... Read More →

Louisville Power Rankings 9/24

By TheDeuce - 1. 6A Male (6-0) After two red zone turnovers in the first half and a handful of other miscues, the Bulldogs overcame a slow start last Friday and pulled away late to beat 6A Butler 30-12 to remain unbeaten on the year. WR Izayah Cummings was the star of the show for Male, pulling down eight catches for 165 yards and a touchdown to lead the offensive attack. Male will travel to 6A Pleasure Ridge Park this week. 2. 2A DeSales (5-0) The Colts handled their fourth higher classed team of the season, defeating 3A power Lexington Catholic 38-24 last week. QB Aaron Pfaadt was 8/11 for 150 yards... Read More →

BluegrassPreps Football Rankings (9/24)

By Ram - Class 1A Newton's Third Law states that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. As Pikeville was hanging their heads over a heartbreaking loss to an out of state opponent, Raceland was celebrating a huge win over a competitor of their own. The Rams move up a spot in the rankings following their stellar win on Portsmouth West's field and will now set their sights on a stout 2A Somerset team. Pikeville can not linger on their second loss in as many weeks. The Panthers have a massive District clash with Hazard awaiting. Beechwood remains at the top of the heap as the... Read More →
