We used to vacation in eastern Tennessee. Kingsport, Johnson City, Elizabethton. At the time it seemed like there was a minor league baseball club in every town.

Sat next to Ernie Whitt this evening at the Clearwater Thresher's game. Whitt was an original Blue Jay, picked up in the 1977 expansion draft, taken from Boston, when the Jays came to be. He ended up playing 12 years for Toronto. He managed the Threshers several years ago and now is a roving instructor for the Phillies organization.

I knew who he was, but didn't want to bother him.

I was monitoring the USF/Florida game on twitter. I mentioned to Mrs. S that Levi had cut down a guy trying to steal 2nd and Whitt said, "That's one of Pat Borders' boys, isn't it?" Pat Borders (1992 WS MVP) is the manager of the Phillies' Williamsport affiliate this season. Levi and Luke Borders are the starting catcher and DH for USF. That's what got us talking.

All in all, he and Mrs. S talked more about shoes his shoes than he and I did about baseball. Why is it when Mrs. S meets new people, it ends up costing me money?

I didn't ask what he was doing, but he had a stop watch and seemed to be timing Colin Kleven's pitches from windup to catcher's mitt or the return throw. I can't be sure. I don't know whether he was watching the pitcher or the catcher. He was a catcher and still is a catching instructor.
