Louisville wins the battle of the player-coaches. Just a week or two before James O’Connor left Louisville City for the Orlando City job, leaving a triumvirate of player coaches behind him, the Tampa Bay Rowdies fired their head coach and appointed defender Neill Collins to the coaching job.
Louisville scored early in the first half on a tap in from Kyle Smith after a low cross in from Niall McCabe. Tampa equalized midway through the second half only have Cameron Lancaster curl home an absolute beauty of a free kick just minutes later. Cameron Lancaster’s 25 goals now make him the leading scorer all time for Louisville, surpassing Matt Fondy’s 24. Only a couple solid saves by Greg Ranjitsingh and a near miss by Tampa kept this from being a draw in the final 10 minutes.
Louisville next plays at fourth-placed Charleston on Saturday, July 14 before going to Chicago for the US Open Cup quarterfinals on July 18.
