Default The big fight many has waited for may be happening: Anderson Silva vs GSP

Dana White Hints at Anderson Silva vs. Georges St-Pierre Superfight, Nixes Nick Diaz - MMA Fighting

After reading the article, it definitely makes sense. IF Silva is going to fight anyone from the welterweight division, it wouldn't make sense to fight anyone else other than GSP.

It's been quite a while; his last fight was 4/30/11 against Jake Shields.

I just feel like its a move rather than a fight. If it happens no matter what the outcome they have an easy spin, with that said unless he gets a lucky shot off GSP doesn't have a shot in hell.

It very well may be. Either way, I don't see Silva losing if it is to happen.

As a fan I just think its a joke to have Silvia fight up a couple fights @ 205, smoke the competition and then say he's going to fight down 2 weight classes from 205 and try to call it a super fight. There a several guys in 185 and 205 that could beat GSP right now, and when I say could I mean that would be favored.

Considering the time that GSP has been out of the octagon and other things he has been through over the past year or two, he's not going to pick back up where he left off. I definitely don't see him back at his fighting form from three years or more ago. Even with winning his last couple of fights, they were not remotely near as dominating as plenty of others from before.

Exactly, if Silva isn't fighting Jones then it's not a historical match up, I don't care what Dana White tries to say.

This fight never interested me, but I think the UFC missed its best opportunity to stage it. They can still sell it, and I'd like to watch it, but I think the buzz was hotter a year or two ago. My opinion hasn't changed. Barring a stroke of luck, Silva will dominate this fight and knock GSP out at some point. He won't be able to implement the plan that has made him dominant at 170 against the bigger, stronger Silva, and his chin is highly suspect, IMO. If he can't get Silva down, his fate will be like the rest of the Spider's foes. And even if he could get him down, Silva may very well submit him and win that way.

Bottom line: In a best case scenario for GSP, let's say he can score a takedown. Silva can possibly win this fight in every way imaginable, including from his back. GSP can win it one way, and that is the same as Sonnen, take Silva down and grind out a decision. Even in a best case, he's a huge underdog, IMO.

Agreed, GSP has always used his length and strength to his advantage, he doesn't have that when he fights up.

Two world class athletes that have dominated their respective weight classes? It's a big fight.

Of course I'd rather see Silva fight Jon Jones.

I think you all are underestimating GSP's takedown ability.

A tired Travis Lutter took Anderson Silva down. Why couldn't GSP?

Not saying he'd win. But he would have a shot.

Silva reportedly had surgery on both knees 11 weeks prior to the Lutter fight. I think that is worth noting.

Eh they're all injured all the time. He could have backed out or delayed the fight if it was bad enough.

I'm just saying GSP isn't an amateur. The difference in size is a disadvantage but it's not a guaranteed victory for Silva.

No guarantee, I agree. But, I can just analyze it on paper and it looks like a terrible matchup for him, IMO.

He loses all of the advantages that have enabled him to dominate at 170. That likely means his biggest weakness/question mark - his chin - will be exposed for much of the fight against best striker in UFC history.

On paper, not good. But, I don't think I'm underestimating GSP. If he wasn't such a great fighter himself, I wouldn't give him any chance whatsoever.

GSP could take Anderson Silva to the ground.

Chael Sonnen is really the only person who's consistently tried to take him down and Sonnen basically took him down whenever he wanted.

Would have liked this fight better a few years ago.

Size may be over rated a bit...I remember "Back in the day" when there weren't weight classes. I don't think classes came in until UFC12, and the bigger guys didn't win them all. Heck they didn't win the majority of them back then.

That was because the smaller guys like Royce Gracie actually knew how to fight. These days they are all world class athletes so size does = an advantage.
