CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Northern Kentucky women's soccer team fell to the Xavier Musketeers on Sunday evening by a score of 2-1. The Musketeers improve to 4-3-1 on the year, while NKU moves to 3-4-0.
"Although we showed some bright spots, we are disappointed in a lot of areas regarding tonight's match," said NKU head coach Bob Sheehan. "We look to have a strong week of training and hopefully be prepared for our first Horizon League contest on Friday."
NKU SCORING SUMMARY
Macy Hamblin pulled a goal back for the Norse in the 53rd minute. Hamblin got behind the Xavier defense, and fired her shot from a tough angle on the left side. The ball went just over the Xavier goalkeeper, and into the back of the net.
BETWEEN THE POSTS
Emily Lohmann faced 17 shots on the night, and she made three saves. Her record is now 3-3-0 this season.
FIRST HALF SUMMARY
Xavier's Carrie Lewis took a shot on goal in the third minute. However, Lohmann was able to make a nice save to keep the Musketeers from scoring.
The Musketeers took a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute. A corner kick was taken from the right side by Courtney Lankford. Her kick entered the box and found Sydney Schembri, who headed the ball into the bottom left corner to give Xavier the early advantage.
In the 24th minute, Hamblin fired a shot from just outside the box, but her attempt was saved by Xavier's Toni Bizzaro
Hamblin was fouled in the 32nd minute. The official called the foul just outside of the box, which resulted in a free kick. Hamblin stepped up to take the kick, and her shot looked as if it was going to go in the bottom lower corner. However, Bizzaro made a fingertip save to prevent the attempt from going into the back of the net.
Xavier extended its lead in the 34th minute. Emma Westwater took a shot near the six-yard line, and her attempt went off the right post and across the goal line.
In the 38th minute, the Norse earned a corner kick. Samantha Duwel was able to get to the ball and head it into a dangerous area, but the ball was cleared by the Xavier defense.
Moments later, Megan Patrick had a great scoring chance in the 39th minute. Payton Naylor's cross found Patrick in the box, but her header went just high of the goal.
Hamblin was once again close to scoring in the 44th minute. After taking a couple of dribbles, she fired a shot from more than 30 yards out. Her attempt hit the crossbar and bounced back into the field of play.
At the end of the half, each team had six shots. The Norse had four on frame, while Xavier had three.
SECOND HALF SUMMARY
The first good scoring chance of the second half came in the 51st minute. Xavier's Maddie Tierney had an open look just outside of the box, but her attempt sailed high of the net.
Hamblin pulled one back in the 53rd minute to make the score 2-1.
In the 57th minute, Schembri found space in the box for Xavier and fired a shot, but Lohmann made another fine save.
Xavier's Addie Englehart took a powerful shot in the 65th minute. However, her attempt went to the right of the goal and out of play.
The Norse had a nice attacking buildup in the 69th minute. The final pass ended up at Duwel's feet, and her shot went just to the left of the goal.
In the 80th minute, a bouncing ball in the box found Schembri, but the NKU defense was able to block Schembri's shot attempt and clear the ball from danger.
Jessica Frey found some space in the box in the 84th minute to try and score the potential equalizer, but her shot attempt went wide right.
The Norse took a corner kick in the 88th minute. Ally Perkins played the ball to Emily Soltes, who found open space in the box. However, her shot attempt went to the right.
Xavier recorded eight corner kicks in the match, and the Norse had four.
Each team had five shots on goal.
Hamblin's goal was her second of the year.
