UI Chicago 5 Northern Kentucky 2 (Baseball)

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Northern Kentucky scored both of its runs in the first inning on Thursday night in the opener of a three-game set at UIC. The Flames jumped ahead with a four-run fourth to defeat NKU, 5-2, as both teams were held scoreless throughout the remainder of the game at Curtis Granderson Stadium. NKU dips to 12-20 (6-4 Horizon) while UIC improves to 22-8 (11-2 Horizon).

Due to anticipated inclement weather, Friday's start time at UIC was changed to 4:05 p.m. ET/3:05 p.m. CT instead of the originally scheduled 7:05 p.m. ET first pitch. The series concludes with a 1:05 p.m. ET/12:05 p.m. CT first pitch on Saturday.

    At the Plate

Trey Ganns drove in both of NKU's runs with an RBI double that scored TJ Alas and Jake Richmond in the first inning.

The UIC pitching staff - which leads the Horizon League in ERA - held NKU to three hits on the day off the bats of Ganns, Will Haueter and Dominic Mercurio.

    On the Mound

Brody Basilone made his first weekend start for the Norse and held the Flames to one run and three hits through his first three innings before UIC scored four runs in the fourth inning.

Charlie Jerger relieved Basilone and gave up a two-run single to his first batter faced to score two runs, both of which were pinned on Basilone. The RBI single was the only hit the Flames managed against Jerger, who tossed 2.2 scoreless innings with one hit.

Travis Rowland gave up a pair of hits while fanning two in 2.0 scoreless innings to end the game.

Reigning Horizon League Pitcher of the Week Jake Dahlberg improved to 6-1 on the season after throwing 7.0 innings with three hits and two runs, one earned, for the Flames.

    Key Moments

Ganns put NKU ahead, 2-0, in the opening frame with his two-run double.

An RBI single in the second inning put the Flames on the board as they went on to plate four runs on four hits and a Norse error in the bottom of the fourth to erase the deficit and lead, 5-2, throughout the remainder of the game.

Jerger and Rowland combined to retire nine-straight batters in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.

Both of UIC's hits against Rowland came in the eighth inning as the junior stranded runners on second and third in the final inning pitched.

    Norse Notes

The Norse pitching staff did not walk a single batter on Thursday.

Ganns has posted 16 RBI in the last six games.

Rowland has not allowed an earned run in his last four appearances, totaling 7.0 innings of work. He has held opponents to three hits and one unearned run in that span.
