Radford 7 Northern Kentucky 3 (Baseball)

The Northern Kentucky University baseball struggled to string together its 13 total hits as it fell to Radford in the finale of a three-game series, 7-3.

With their win, the Highlanders (5-11) claim the weather-shortened series, winning 2-of-3 against the Norse (3-10).

    At the Plate

All nine batters who saw action recorded a hit on Sunday, but NKU stranded 11 on base.

Four Norse recorded multi-hit games with TJ Alas, Dominic Mercurio and Mike Moffatt going 2-for-4 while Trey Ganns went 2-for-5.

Moffat scored two of NKU's three runs and posted a double while Jake Richmond posted the lone RBI.

    On the Mound

NKU starter Jean-Francois Dionne made his first appearance as a Norse. The senior tossed a pair of 1-2-3 innings and struck out five but ended his outing with seven runs allowed, six of which were earned off nine hits. He walked two.

Charlie Jerger tossed the final 2.0 innings, holding the Highlanders scoreless on two hits.

    Key Moments

Mike Moffatt scored the first run of the game after leading off the third with a double. He crossed home on a Jake Richmond RBI single for a 1-0 Norse lead.

The advantage was short-lived as Radford plated four runs in the bottom of the frame, one of which was unearned after NKU posted a pair of miscues in the inning.

Radford added to their 4-1 lead with a two-run fifth which included an RBI single and a sacrifice bunt. NKU trailed by five, 6-1, through five innings.

The Highlanders pinned on a run off of a sacrifice fly in the sixth for a 7-1 advantage.
Moffatt scored on a double play ball as he crossed the plate for the second time to cut the RU lead to 7-2.

NKU threatened in the top of the ninth, with Alas and Richmond reaching to lead off the frame. The Norse would manufacture one more run when Richmond advanced to second on a Ganns single and crossed on a throwing error on the same play for the 7-3 result.

    Norse Notes

NKU batted .352 in the series and out-hit Radford, 38-30. The Norse have 82 hits across the last seven games and are averaging .314 at the plate in that span and .253 total on the season.

Against Radford, Ganns batted .556, going 5-for-9 with four runs scored. Brad Bohlen and Moffatt also posted five hits across the last three games. Chad Roberts and Will Haueter led with three RBI apiece in the series.

All six Norse relievers who saw action out of the bullpen this weekend combined for a 1.08 ERA after allowing just one earned run in 8.2 innings of work.
Jerger has held opponents to a .224 average in his five appearances and 13.1 innings pitched this season.

Richmond extended his hit streak to eight games and is also on a nine-game reached base streak. Meanwhile, Ganns, Roberts and Mercurio are each on a seven-game hit streak.
