Northern Kentucky 11 Oakland 9 (Baseball)

ROCHESTER, Mich. Northern Kentucky baseball clinched the series against Oakland and locked down the No. 3 seed for the Horizon League Tournament with a come-from-behind victory over the Golden Grizzlies. The Norse used a six-run eighth to edge Oakland, 11-9. With the win, NKU moves on to 23-31 overall and 16-13 in League play, while Oakland drops to 15-37 (11-18 HL).

    At the Plate

NKU was out-hit by Oakland in the second game of the series, 10-9, with eight different Norse recording at least one hit.

Kyle Colletta went 2-for-4 with one run batted in and two runs scored to post the only multi-hit performance of the game.

TJ Alas, Trey Ganns, Brad Bohlen and Preston Pilat each drove in a pair of runs in the victory.

    On the Mound

Jordan Menfee got the start on Friday, pitching 1.1 innings with five runs allowed on five hits.

Charlie Jerger relieved Menfee in the second, tossing the next 2.2 innings with one run allowed on one hit.

The next three innings were split between Pat Kelley and Joe Martin, the latter of which got the win and moved to 3-1 after striking out two and allowing just one hit in 1.1 innings of work.

Travis Rowland and Cameron Ross each pitched a full inning, with Ross picking up his fifth save of the season.

    Key Moments

The Norse were able to strike first with an RBI single from Ganns scoring Jake Richmond, but Oakland answered back with five runs between the first and second frame.

NKU made a surge in the fourth to get within a run after Colletta batted in his first run before being scored, along with Bohlen, off a double from Preston Pilat.

Oakland looked to take control of the game in the bottom of the third with three runs to give the Golden Grizzlies a 9-5 advantage, but NKU erupted for six runs in the top of the eighth to swing the lead.

NKU opened up scoring in the frame off a two-RBI single by Alas before a bases-loaded walk drawn by Ganns allowed Richmond to cross the plate. Bohlen tied it up with a sac fly, and the Norse plated the winning run when Alas took advantage of an error. Ganns provided an insurance run off a single from Chad Roberts to give NKU its final run of the contest.

    Norse Notes

Alas extended his hitting streak to 15 games and has reached base in the past 45 contests.

With two runs scored, Richmond continues to lead the Horizon League in the category with his 50th run of the season.

Between the two games of the series so far, the Norse are batting .312, led by Bohlen at .500 after going 3-for-6 with four RBI and three runs scored. Ganns has also driven in four runs and scored four of his own, and is batting .429 in the series.
