Default Rex Ryan: Going for two every time might make sense with Tebow

Jets coach Rex Ryan can’t remember where he first heard it, but after his team acquired Tim Tebow, Ryan heard an idea he found intriguing: Someone suggested that Tebow is such a good goal-line quarterback, as both a runner and a passer, that the Jets ought to go for two after every touchdown.

“I don’t know where it came from but they were like, ‘They ought to go for two every time this year.’ That might make sense,” Ryan said.

Intrigued by the notion, Ryan gave it some thought. He said that it’s not realistic to simply do away with the one-point extra point, but it is realistic to think the Jets can feel much more confident than most teams when they go for two, thanks to Tebow.

I know is not a for sure/definite but I think it is crazy talk.

The JETS may win a game or two because of it but it will be the game or two they lose because of it that will have everyone in deep.

    Thoughts?

Can they be successful 50% of the time?

Might be something to it. He's a load with 10 blockers from 2 yards out.

Seems as if there was a link a while back about a HS in Texas that never kicks. Always goes for 2, never punts and then on-sides kicks after TD's. Course HS and the NFL are far different, but others have tried a similar thought.

Nfl coaches don't have the guts to try. I saw some programming that suggested it's better than a 50% chance.

Ashland has been doing it for about 5 or 6 years with a much better than 50% success rate. Still can't get past Northern Kentucky though.

I have always thought going for two would become mainstream at some point. Games would be thought of in multiples of 8 instead of 7 like they are now.

I've read more than one study that says you should never punt.

'The NFL Beat': Punt in an Elevator - Punting it up while we're going down - Sports Blog - The Austin Chronicle

At some point someone is going to try it.....Oakland A's style

I've never heard anything analyzing the merits or insanity of this plan. I have seen things suggesting that the numbers and probabilities say NFL coaches punt way too much and should go for it on 4th down more often. Basically, once you get between the 40's, any reasonable 4th down distance and the numbers say go for it.

Ultimately, it doesn't seem like the 2-point idea would be worth it. I'd say a 50% conversion rate is pretty good in the league, and that is basically a wash over the long haul.

But, I do suspect Tebow might be able to produce a better than average conversion rate of 16 games.

I saw that on HBO's Real Sports a year or so ago. Pretty cool. I believe it was their state championship game a few years ago, they were up 28-0 less than 5 minutes into the game and the opponent had yet to run an offensive play. When it works, it works.

I could see it working in high school. It would also put a lot of pressure on your opponents I would think. Most teams gear up for that big third down stop, but against a team like that, you'd have to be prepared mentally for four downs every time. On the flipside, the no punt team would be more relaxed possibly on third downs knowing that they had one more shot. The mental aspect of it is interesing to me.

It's a decent theory, I called it the "Getslow playing EA Sports' NCAA Football '99 on Playstation Postulate."

I'd imagine that there are a lot of teams who do this. I know that the Kenton Wildcats in Ohio (I believe they are division 3 or 4) never kick extra points of field goals. They won the 2003 and 2004 state championship for their division that way with Ben Mauk (former UC QB). This year I believe they lost in the State Finals with Ben's little brother Matty Mauk (who will be playing his college ball at Missouri) and they would always go for 2.
