Not buying it .... totally!!! Why would you be more protective of a n.f.l. player, with a BAD rep, than you would your own son? It's human nature to defend and look out over your kids. But i don't know you Hellbird,so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt.

    Can't hit a defenseless player.

    Some things I considered...
    1) NFL Officials are not perfect. They miss plays. So the fact that there was no flag thrown on the play, isn't the be-all, end-all of whether or not the hit was legal.
    2) The NFL has had a history of penalizing players (usually through fines) for plays after reviewing the tape of the game.

That being said, I think they would be setting a precedent for future similar plays. Either it's a legal hit, or it's illegal. Just because Burfict has a history doesn't make a legal play illegal. If they deem it illegal and punish him for it, they need to punish everyone who does it.

Now, where Burfict's history SHOULD come into play, in my opinion, is in the severity of the punishment. Same way a three time drug dealer should get more than someone who's busted the first time for possession. In this situation, I would think a first offense will draw a fine. A second offense will force you to sit a game. They've gone ahead and taken 1/3 of the season. Seems like a pretty big jump to me. What are they going to do when someone uses the crown of their helmet, or hits an opposing player in their head? How do you justify someone else getting injured (concussion) and that penalty being less than 5 games?

I think they fired a shot across the bow by announcing 5 games. They knew darn well there was going to be an appeal. This way they can get his attention, and still give him 2 games off.

Guy gets away with more questionable late hits than anybody I can remember in recent history. It will interesting to see how they handle his antics. How many of these would warrant a 5 game suspension?

Absolutely! He's got to keep himself on the field.

If Burficts hit is worthy of 5 games then the two hits on Eifert and Green were both cause for a year long suspension.

You missed the entire point. The point is it's part of the game unless it's a dirty play and neither was.

No flag on the play. So has the NFL become the LPGA? Did a fan call in? Should the refs be suspended for missing sure a horrific call that resulted in a 5 game suspension?

Along these lines, is handing out punishment the following week the norm or will it become the norm?

If this hit had taken place during the regular season, would they have waited until after the Bengals' next game to rule on the play?
