Default Brandon Roy to Announce Retirement

Portland's Brandon Roy is reportedly hanging them up - medical retirement.

Not sure who broke the news but I saw it first from Chris Broussard on Twitter.

Wow, this coming after the Blazers said they would be bringing Roy back this year instead of using their AC on him.

So if he retires they get his cap relief plus can amnesty someone? I think its noble of him to be honest about it. Sad story, sad ending, but he could have easily kept on collecting the paycheck if he wanted.

They get the cap relief in a year. He will still get paid his full contact.

Is Roy who they were talking about when they mentioned a degenerative knee disorder?

Unfortunate, hate to see this for any player.

I hate this. Roy was going to have a very good career. Just goes to show that nothing is certain in sports. 4 years ago Roy, Oden and Aldridge seemed like a dream trio going forward. The afterthought in their trio is going to have the best career.

I know the contracts are "guaranteed" but guess I didn't realize that even if you retire you still get paid? Really? That's crazy. So a player could sign a contract, retire the next day and get paid for the life of the contract?

No, he is medically retiring meaning doctors determined his knee is so bad he needs to retire.

Just like HammerTime said, a medical retirement is different from an ordinary retirement. Financially, I believe it's the same as if he spent the remainder of his contract on the inactive list except the Blazers get to avoid the cap problem.

I wasn't sure myself but I saw a number of tweets about it.

Considering the crazy day we had yesterday, is there any chance the league doctor that has to sign off on a medical retirement won't let this go through?

    Interesting statistic someone compiled today:

Due to injuries, Brandon Roy and Greg Oden only played together 78 times. The Trailblazers went 50-28 in those games.

That team had the makings of a great young core in Roy, Oden and Aldridge when they came together following the 2007 draft. It's a shame we never got to see how good they could have been.

If Roy and Oden were healthier, they would have become a very good team.
