  1. It was a late hit. The run went to the left and the whistle had just sounded when a HC player took down a BC player away from the play, way away, on the right side of the field. Officiating crew was from HC, they're one of the top crews in the area and done a terrific job. They let both teams play a little and only threw the hankies when they had to. One thing was confusing though, I thought it should have been 1st and 15 after the late hit penalty, not 1st and 10. HC got the 1st down at the six, than marked off the penalty back to the 21. I'm sure it was right, just didn't make much sense
  2. Great game by both teams!!!! Bell made a few key adjustments at the half on defense that proved to be the difference. Was impressed by the HC crowd, not sure I can remember a time when the visitors had more in the stands than Bell. Where were you Big Blue Nation???? I know the weather was bad, but this was a huge game on sr night... HC should be playing in Bowling Green in five weeks. Hopefully Bell will be also, but we got so shafted by the KHSAA in the re-alignment, lol, on the southeast border of the state, but in the WEST section of the playoffs.
  3. You're right MT, I completely forgot about him, to my knowledge he is the only non-coach on the committee. He actually is over the all-star stuff I think. I was always under the impression that he chose who the committee members were and stuff like that. I have no knowledge of the "problem" he may or may not have with Laurel County, but like or dislike him, he tirelessly promotes fastpitch. I remember when he started the first all-star game between the 12th and 13th in 98. Or at least I think it was the first one.
  4. Initially each head coach that's a member of the coach's association nominates up to 3 players, usually from their own team. Then there's two committees, east and west. Usually 10 or so coaches make up each committee. They choose the members of each team to compete against each other in the annual "East-West" Game. Then from those two teams, the "Kentucky" All-Stars are chosen. I'm not a 100% sure about who makes the "Kentucky" choices, but I think it may be the coaches involved in the actual "East-West" game. There's both a jr and sr squad for the East-West games so a lot of players from around the state get a chance to participate. I should say that's how it was chosen in year's past, I'm just guessing it's still the same way. Shirer does play v'ball and you're right, she's a tremendous athlete.
  5. Gotta agree with you MT. I was shocked when I saw Akins wasn't on the team. I wonder if maybe it was just a situation that she was going to be out of town or something when they were playing. At least I hope that it was something like that. But looks like they would have named her to the team and then just chosen an alternate.
  6. I agree about Corbin, I think it's more about them getting better than SL "coming back to the pack".
  7. I knew Clay had won a region, they beat Bell in Manchester in the finals. But I think it was 96, not 97. Clay is a basketball powerhouse, but I don't feel one regional title makes you a "powerhouse". That's why I only included the three teams that I did.
  8. I knew you two would come through for me on the info about the 2/3 sport athletes. I agree Thunder about kids playing more than one sport. You see burnout problems more and more these days.
  9. Guys give Les a break. Did you notice what time the story was posted on the website, something like 12:30 AM? It may have just been a case of getting the news late and not having a chance to try to get in touch with Elam because of the late hour. But I'm not sure that he even had to contact Elam. He had the confirmation. A quote would have been nice, but not necessary. Besides, it's the supt.'s responsibility to contact Elam before anything is released.
  10. Sorry, you're right, Clay isn't, I meant to type Cumberland. Even though they no longer exist, I think they still have to be mentioned. I also feel as if maybe his statement was meant for this year. Moved on:walk:
  11. To Cards1b21, I'm a little confused. I've went back over the thread and maybe I'm missing it, but where does anyone say Bell is a Powerhouse in baseball??? Only a less-than intelligent person would think that. Anyone following baseball, saw this 2 year run coming when these kids were in middle school. And I would say the comment about Greer was in a negative fashion. Gotta agree with Mtn. Thunder, not sure where your "stats" post came from. Anyone that follows the sport knows that Corbin, Clay, and Middlesboro are the powerhouses in the 13th in baseball. I guess SL would be included, I'm not sure what they did in the 12th, but only being in the 13th for 4 years kinda makes it a borderline reference. Just trying to understand your logic and point???
  12. I didn't realize Elam had been there 8 years. Or at least I think that's what Les's article said. He took over for JD correct??? I agree with you about the girls program. And let me make it clear, I'm not bashing, just not sure how you fire Elam, regardless of cause, and keep the girls coach. Does anyone know what his overall W-L record is??? Again not bashing, but firing Elam, makes it almost impossible not to analyze the success of the girls program.
  13. To Les and Mtn. Thunder, I'm curious, how many of the NL and SL starters play bball and/or vball? I know several from Corbin and Harlan Co, play one other, if not both. Actually, I'd say most schools in the 13th, have a big crossover ratio. some of the posts were talking about travel/summer ball, but for most schools, those kids are at bball camps or starting v'ball practice/conditioning.
