Didn't throw it well. Didn't catch it well. Didn't hit it well. UC threw it well, caught it well and hit it well. Result is obvious. Key inning was a 4 run B2. UC had runners on 1B & 2B w/ 1 out after their 9 hitter popped up a bunt to McAvane trying to sac. (Maybe 5% of players would be smart enough to let that bunt drop and then try to turn the 5-4 DP and certainly wouldn't expect it from a FR.) Leadoff hits a chopper to the hole between...

On the bump, Bennett, Martin & Henzman were tough. Bennett's hold on the SUN starting position remains firm as he pitches well and Hoeing and McAvane continue to find their way. Martin is a pleasant surprise as a transfer as he pounds the zone (15 pitches in 2.0IP facing the minimum). Henzman is making people forget about the Burdis in the bullpen - no small feat! Lyman's key 2 out, 0-2 hit drove in 2 key runs in the 7th. It's a different...

They are not very disciplined, basketball smart or 5* talented. They played hard, had good depth and wanted to learn. Probably over-achieved from what could have been reasonably expected at the outset of the season. Both a fun and ultimately frustrating team to watch based on the above.

Don't sleep on the Baseball Cards. #1 in the nation and as it starts to warm up there are going to be some very good ACC and midweek matchups and JPat has a great atmosphere (and the price is right as well). Game against NKU at Slugger Field and then the ACC Tournament there as well. If they continue to play well, they could potentially play any playoff games at JPat as well. Go Cards!

McClure was perfect through 5.2 and very good through his 8 IP. May have tired a bit giving up a run in the 8th. Riley Thompson failed to close it out and Adam Wolf did not help with the 1 batter he faced in the 9th and ended up making things closer than Coach McDonnell would have liked with 3 runs allowed. I'm sure he would have saved Henzman for today, but he called on him and he answered closing things out with a K and then a strike out...

Very nice win for the Cats. They are showing very well. The midweek Home and Home series with UofL could end up as a featured matchup with some TV coverage (SEC Network, maybe?)

While I am sure Dan McDonnell will be graceful about the recognition that comes from the program's 1st ever #1 ranking, he will also tell you that it won't, by itself, get them to Omaha. Sure it helps to be ranked highly throughout the year to make sure you get a Top 8 seed (host until you lose or travel to Omaha) or at least a Top 16 seed (host 1st weekend (Regional) and 2nd weekend (Super Regional) IF the Top 8 seed you're paired with does not...

Interesting that the 2 hits Bennett allowed were both bunt singles. He also retired 14 straight after the 2nd hit in the 2nd inning before being pulled after 6 IP w/ 74 pitches. The only walk he allowed was the game's leadoff batter. Assume he will pitch on SUN until he loses that opportunity based on performance. Great job by Henzman to come back & get the last out after pitching 2.0 IP on FRI in support of McKay. Thompson was a touch wild...

Good offense and pitching were the order of the day. McClure was very strong, if not dominant. 2 BBs and 4 hits allowed over 6.0 but no runs. Wolf was OK but a leadoff walk in the 9th up 8-0 is not a recipe for success. 2 runs allowed. Hummel cleaned up nicely. Hairston had a shot in the 3rd inning which either bounced off the berm beyond the fence back into LF or off of the very top of the padded fence. Umps ruled it was not a HR although...

McKay came back strong (to say the least) after skipping a start. He was filthy both on velo and with the hammer curveball. Offense was not clicking with runners in scoring position (10 hits and only 3 runs) but did enough to get the win.

Hoeing continues to search on the mound. 3.1 IP w/ 6 H and lucky to only give up 2 R. 4 BB has to be driving McDonnell crazy after McAvene's wildness on SUN. These FR will learn to throw strikes for Roger Williams or they won't throw at all. Would not be shocked to see Bennett get the start on SUN against Pitt after their comparative performances last weekend when McKay missed his start. NOTE: the 4 relievers that followed (Bordner , Elliott,...

4-21 from 3 & 15-26 from FT, I am shocked it was as close as it was. UofL failed to adapt when Duke went 2-3 zone. They acted like they had never seen such a thing. UofL cannot defend effectively without fouling. Somehow they had 2 team fouls over the 1st 11:02 of the game and 21 over the next 28:58. Poor fundamentals. 2 v. 3 seed is not a huge difference, particularly this year. Perhaps it puts UK in the matchup with NKU in Indy as a...

This is a good win for UK as Wright State has a solid program that took 2/3 at #10 Clemson in the opening weekend, 1/3 at #4 South Carolina the following weekend and went to Regionals last year.

As mentioned earlier, CCH failed to adapt to the Cooper 1-3-1 zone. Not only did they fail to attack it effectively, they were very hesitant & slow in doing so. Lots of looping passes allowing defenders to make up ground. Other than the 3 treys in a row, they had no answer. Lots of deflections (mostly kicks) and there was no rhythm because of that. Kunkel was the difference. Walters went out to guard the high screen and Cooper left his guy...

Bennett (Moeller) making a strong bid for the SUN starting spot. Will be interesting to see who pitches TUE @ EKU and WED v. Fort Wayne. If the ACC wasn't starting v. Pitt on FRI, maybe McKay would throw a couple of innings. However, assuming he's fully healthy I'm sure he'll stay in his FRI night spot. Maybe Hoeing on TUE and Bennett gets the ball on WED? He'd have 4 days rest from FRI night game.

Frustrating game for the Cards. Should have won it in the 9th. 1B & 2B w/ no outs and Lyman pops up the bunt. After double steal, Fitzgerald Ks and then fellow FR Wyatt does the same. Opportunities in extra frames were wasted as well. Fine pitching performance by McClure. Wolf was good after a shaky 7th. Henzman continues to be lights out. Thompson got the win but wriggled out of trouble in the 13th (the only inning he pitched).

9th inning rally to tie and a win in extra innings on SAT flow right over into a nip & tuck battle on SUN. Don't think the Cards ever trailed and it was only tied briefly but it was nice to see these 2 games show they can win in a manner other than get up early and add on. :) McAvene was rolling until he couldn't find the strike zone. Walked 4 to lead off the 3rd or 4th inning and McDonnell had seen enough. Stuff is dominant but you can't...

Disadvantage of the double bye is a quality opponent in GM1. Va. Tech was best case and UofL only beat them by 4 (although they shot the eyes out) at home. Duke & UVa are both quality opponents. UNC wins the league and gets winner of Syracuse v. Miami! Really happy to see Mangok go out with a great game. He has been frustrating at times but has developed into a serviceable role-playing big man.
