First, let's look at the type of precipitation radars from the NAM, GFS and the new GFS-FV3 model. The NAM is showing most of the snow being confined east of I-65. Starting around 7 pm EST and progressing eastward. All of the following start at the same time. The GFS is showing the snow starting west of I-65 but not as heavy as the NAM model.

I will post my first call later today. There still seems to be a big enough difference from the three models I use to make me want to hold off for now.

Looks more snow is on the way for parts of Kentucky Wednesday later afternoon into early Thursday morning. Temps will range from the low to mid-40s in the western part of the state to the mid to upper 50s in the east. Rain and showers will occur ahead of a front that will pass through late Wednesday. Temps will drop after the front passes changing the rain from freezing rain into snow. Temps will range in the low to mid-20s Thursday morning for...

I'm going to hold off until later to update snow accumulation forecast totals. While GFS-FV3 and NAM agree on some significant snow accumulation totals they don't agree where this area will be yet. GFS-FV3 has it in southern Indiana very close to Kentucky the NAM has it in Kentucky from just east of Louisville into northern Kentucky. If this holds true and it is in Kentucky people in that area could receive 12-14"+ of snow. So let us just...

Just received this information from the National Weather Service-Louisville Office. Rain will change over to snow from northwest to southeast this evening Significant snowfall expected along with blowing and drifting snow Locally higher amounts possible in bands. Travel this evening and overnight will become very hazardous. Some roads could be briefly impassable tonight in southern IN/northern KY including I-64 and parts of I-65....

My concern for those in and around the Cincinnati/NKY area is growing. The freezing rain estimated totals are remaining a little on the high side for my taste. As of right now maybe a .25"+ before the snow starts.

Everyone batten down the hatches! This looks like it could be a wild one. I'm waiting on the updated GFS and GFS-FV3 updates. If both of those confirm what the NAM is now showing I fully expect the Winter Storm Warning area to be expanded to include most if not all of western Kentucky and parts of Kentucky to at least around the I-64 corridor.

Winter storm warning A winter storm warning is a statement made by the National Weather Service of the United States which means a winter storm is occurring or is about to occur in the area, usually within 36 hours. Generally, a Winter Storm Warning is issued if the following criteria, at least, are forecast: usually between 4 inches to 7 inches or more of snow or usually 3 inches or more of snow with a large accumulation of ice.

We have the making of a major winter storm hitting Kentucky later today through Sunday morning. Before I get to the possible snow lets look at the rain for during the day on Saturday. Rain can be expected across the entire state. Widespread 1-2" of rain accumulation is expected. Localized minor flooding is possible over south central Kentucky, especially in the areas that experience repeated heavy rain showers or thunderstorms. Winds could gust...

The upcoming 10th anniversary of the 2009 Ice Storm is what started me on the path of studying weather. A wintry mix moved into southern Indiana and central Kentucky on the night of Monday, January 26, 2009. Precipitation began as light freezing drizzle and freezing rain over the entire area, but changed to sleet and then snow overnight into the early morning hours of Tuesday across southern Indiana and northern Kentucky. Up to 6 inches of...

The models are still having some problems coming to grips with this weekends storm. Here's what the afternoon data is showing. First the NAM it is showing most of the heaviest accumulations in Western Kentucky and along the Ohio River. Also, it is showing a small impulse that could cause some light snow Sunday night for parts of Western Kentucky. The GFS is also showing most of the same with the heaviest accumulations along the Ohio River...
