  1. Why would you say something is fishy when someone voted Clark Co. #1 which accounted for their 25 points? The poll is done on a point system. Why would blame the person that counts it? People should be happy that someone cares enough about the game to tabulate the rankings (sent from the coaches) each week. If you look at the final poll, it was actually pretty accurate. Of the top 12 teams, they all finished in the top 12 in the state except for 4 (These 4 didn't make it to the state because of their region. Grayson-same region as Owensboro Catholic; Dunbar same region as Scott Co.; Manual and Mercy-same region as Ballard). Final Regular Season Rankings (top 12) 1. Owensboro Catholic (8) 432 – 3rd in state 2. North Laurel (9) 431 – state runner up 3. Greenwood (3) 407 –state champion 4. Ryle (2) 398 – 4th in state 5. Ballard 351 – top 12 in state 6. Scott County 290 – top 12 in state 7. Grayson County 288 8. Reidland 283 – 7th in state 9. Christian County 258 – 5th in state 10. Manual 223 11. Dunbar 177 12. Mercy 171 Full rankings at http://www.kyhighschoolsoftball.com/rankings.htm
  2. The proposal for softball is 3 classes based on Track and Field (like the All State Honorees are selected). This proposal is a few years in the making, but hasn't been passed. Owensboro Catholic is 2A. Heath is 2A. Reidland is 2A. Calloway Co. is 3A. Lone Oak is 2A. All these teams have been in the state tournament in recent years, but some are confused as smaller schools. The one strong 1A school that I remember recently in the state was Middlesboro. That's the only one I have a recent memory of. The All A classic does something different in selecting All A participants. I haven't figured it out. See http://www.kyhighschoolsoftball.com/members.htm as a guideline for classification.
  3. That's some deep analysis. Sorry if I missed a post through this, but am I wrong in thinking that going to 6 classes for football is only about fixing 4A? If classification for most sports is watering down a state championship, then does that make most other states wrong, or is it Kentucky? From what I understand, because basketball isn't in favor of classification, it has held other sports from being classified. It seems that all the dates and everything else in KY high school sports revolves around basketball. Why do spring sports games have to begin following the final basketball tournament? Does basketball season wait until after football state to begin their first game (I don't think basketball should have to wait anymore than spring sports should have to wait). Just food for thought. Also, why does a football team have to determine it's spring football practice by when it's girls or boys basketball team finishes (this seems pretty backwards)? Couldn't all football teams begin practice in April sometime on the same determined date? :walk: Any thoughts on those issues?
  4. It's pretty obvious that some people have their minds made up about Sphire and Lexington Catholic no matter what the facts are. Some have to go as far as trying to prove he couldn't coach because of his record at Knott Co. Did I miss something.........was Knott Co. a state power before he arrived? Has anyone ever walked into that job and been immediately successful? This year, Coach Sphire and his program had to beat in consecutive weeks: Covington Catholic, Highlands, Rockcastle Co., and Bowling Green. All are great established programs with excellent coaching staffs as well. Congratulations to Lexington Catholic's football program for a well deserved and hard fought State Championship. As far as past playoff losses, here's a few................lost to: Bourbon Co. (who won the state), lost to Danville (state runner up), lost to Boyle Co.--2 years in a row (state champ both years). These go back a few years, but even more so.............these were teams that were not slouches. If I'm not mistaken, in the two years that Boyle Co. beat Lexington Catholic, Boyle Co. won 2 regular season games and 2 playoff games by a total of 16 points for all 4 games (In 2000, Boyle Co. won both games by 2 points). They were hard fought games. The winner of those games was going to win state. It's a shame that people ("haters") want to cut down a successful coach, but they don't even know all the facts. Congrats to the Lexington Catholic players (the approx. 3 to 4 D-I players and the 90 or so other players) and staff that worked hard together to win state. Great job! :dancingpa
  5. Not arguing how good Louisville schools are. The best Louisville schools are better than the best Lexington schools this year and in most years as proven by the state finals.:( I just want to throw in a few facts that should be considered in the overall picture. Basically the comparison isn't really fair except maybe comparing the best 2 or 3 teams in each city. Here's some facts about Lexington: With the exception of a 2 or 4 year period (2 year contracts for football), Lexington schools have always been in the same district (since 1975....maybe even before). From 1975 until 1991, there were only 4 football schools in Lexington.....all in the same district. Dunbar opened in 1991 (I think), Lex. Cath started football in 1992 (5 game schedule), and Lexington Christian started football in 2000 or 2001. Sticking with the 4A football comparison.....Lexington has 5 teams that are all in the same district. Only one Lexington school can come out of that region. With the exception of the 2 or 4 year period when KHSAA split the Lex. schools into separate districts so the Lex. schools wouldn't knock each other off, Lex. schools could not have met in the finals. I'm not tooting the horn for Lexington supremacy. I just wanted to supply some facts that were not given. Facts about Louisville schools (I may need some help here). There are approximately 13, 4A schools (to Lexington's 5). Louisville schools can play each other in the finals (Trinity vs. St. X??). Louisville schools have a better record in the finals against Lexington schools! Louisville's best is better than Lexington's best! Why is Louisville stronger? I'm from Lex. My guess is youth leagues and middle school teams. The number of youth league teams in Lexington (example....10 to 12 year olds) is not good. I'm guessing there are less than 10 teams in the city??? When I was growing up, there was 8 teams at Shillito Park and 10 at Southland Park (this was before soccer was an option.. 25 years ago), so there was probably about 40-50 teams in the city. Then and now the Fayette Co. junior high/middle school league was a joke! They only play about 6 games and that's it! I'm sure Louisville has it better (I hope). Until the middle school league in Fayette Co. is better, I don't see how Lex. can keep up with Louisville on a regular basis.
