Last week's notebook asked where are the upsets, and finally, 4A had an answer. To be fair, it was right in the week we were looking for them, but still, it was a prolonged period of calm. Knox Central entered the week rated #4 and unbeaten against Kentucky competition. They traveled to #7 Franklin County for a possible region final preview, good enough to earn honors as the game of the week in 4A. Franklin County drew first blood and the...

It was closer than Taylor County would have liked, but the Cardinals wrapped up their first district title in a decade with a 26-21 come from behind win over Mercer County. Taylor County trailed at the half, 14-6, but surged ahead with 20 straight points to win their fifth in a row. They close with a Marion County team that just had their playoff hopes ended in a 35-26 loss to East Jessamine, a team Taylor County shut out 34-0. This has all...

The Clutch Cougars finally saw their luck run out, as they fell in a narrow 21-17 result against Madisonville last week, denying them a second straight district title. So how does Logan County respond to their first regular season loss in two years? They'll travel to a Calloway County team that technically, is still alive to force a three way tie for second. I haven't dug into the tiebreaker scenarios for that, but it'd be a difficult scenario...

The Mustangs are hunting for a district title as the winner of this matchup will earn the top seed from District 3. Moore is having a stellar year at 7-1, and their only loss coming on the road at #1 Johnson Central. They'll have had 15 days to prepare for this one, and they'll look to build on the 15-0 shutout of John Hardin they inflicted a year ago. Meanwhile, John Hardin has experienced a resurgence after 2017's disappointing run. ...

The Maroons took to the road to exorcise the demons of 2017, this time pulling out the narrow victory over a Logan County team that victimized them a year ago. With the win, Madisonville completed an unbeaten run in District 1, and they'll stay the heck away from Franklin-Simpson until the region finals. They enter at 6-2, and will take on a Christian County team that they haven't taken down since a 20-0 win in 2011. Christian County has...

The Panthers got their bell rung a bit bit Franklin County, losing to a Kentucky team for the first time this season, snapping a five game win streak, and pumping the breaks on them being the region favorites. They stay on the road this week to take on a Rockcastle County team that in theory remains in the hunt for the #1 seed. The Rockets could force a three-way tie atop the district with a win, but will settle into #3 with a loss. They won...

It's the one you've been waiting for - the game of the year in 4A. Ashland enters at 9-0, and are seeking their first unbeaten regular season since 1975. They're averaging just over 39 points per game, and the 21 they gave up to Greenup County last week was their most allowed since August. They stunned everyone a year ago in knocking off Johnson Central 21-18 in the regular season finale, before falling in the playoffs to them 54-27 - their...

I'm not certain what everyone is referring to when they are saying "all-region", but this is the 2018 team, as voted on by the coaches: First Team Skyelar Potter, Warren Central, Sr. Jared Coomer, Barren County, Sr. Jarius Key, Bowling Green, Sr. Jackson Harlan, Clinton County, Jr. Billy Michael Dyer, Monroe County, Sr. Second Team

As I saw that Nebraska fell to 0-6 for the first time ever with a loss today, I found myself remembering this thread. I'm still not certain what the answer is, and you'd like to think Nebraska won't move on so fast (especially with the buyout), but Frost ought to be careful.

So long as Franklin gets to play the home team and not the Spartans this time, I'd say they'll be in good shape.

Yep. Only time they've allowed more points, and that's one of only three other times they've had a larger margin in a defeat. All of which is a testament to how good this team that BG just played was, because the Purples are very, very good.

I'm not sure anyone got helped, but I agree, if no injuries for Bowling Green, no harm either. You'd have to be at least in your 50s to have witnessed the last time Bowling Green was beaten that badly or given up that many points. Almost 49 years to the day. You may never see that again.

The game was pretty much inexplicable. Multiple turnovers in the red zone, sometimes some turnovers on back to back plays by each team, and the two teams combined for two touchdowns and a field goal in the final 2:30 after scoring zero points for the entire second half.
