Grandfather on mom’s side was in the Army during WWII. Was on staff to a general and was all over North Africa and Europe during and after the war. Grandfather on dad’s side served in the Army infantry in WWII also. Landed in Europe just days after D-Day and spent the winter of 1944-45 in the forests of Belgium and earned a Bronze Star in the Battle of the Bulge. More distantly, I know some people served in the Union army in the Civil War...

When you get right down to it, saying “England” in this context is like saying “the Reds”. You’re referring to the collection of players, not to the country itself. Not a construction I’m going to use, but I get it.

This is FIFA and the US Soccer Federation. They’d put their own mothers on the block if they thought there was a dollar in it.

Out late last night. Woke up after 7, went to the couch and turned on the World Cup. I will remain here for as long as I’m able. Will have to get up at some point as I have early dinner reservations in OTR followed by tickets to La Traviata at Music Hall.

Ronaldo just owned this game. Portugal clearly overmatched by a superior Spanish team and the only reason they were in it was because he willed them to it. Spain had crisp passing and solid strategy. Absolutely should have won. But Ronaldo would not be denied. Portugal will be thrilled to have grabbed a point. Spain will be supremely disappointed with the draw. Ill be shocked if these two don’t go through to the Round of 16 with ease.

It's definitely soccer fans. At least here in the US. It's definitely got the highest proportion of fans that can't shut up about it. Still, I checked golf fans because to heck with those guys.

Group D will be interesting. My gut tells me that Croatia's overwhelming talent will see them through, but they've got some old guys playing in defense.

I have this one in my stack to take with me to Michigan next week. I'm really looking foward to it. I just finished a short novel of magical realism called "What the Family Needed" by Steven Amsterdam. It was fun but not earth-shattering. Getting ready to start Station Eleven but Emily St. John Mandel, which is a post-apocalyptic sci-fi novel that takes place somewhere in the Great Lakes region so I figured it was appropriate for my...

You had it. CONCACAF Gold Cup will take place in June of 2019 with a spot in what could be the final Confederations Cup on the line. Those will be the USA's next competitive matches. With CONCACAF Nations League getting started this fall, I'm interested to see what happens to the format of the Gold Cup going forward.

Still up in the air but the last story I heard was that FIFA was looking to scrap the Confederations Cup after 2021. They want to move the Club World Cup to June and have it replace the other tournament entirely. Don’t think that’s officially happened yet though.

FIFA have yet to make that call. Everything is still a proposal at this point. But with the field expanding from 32 teams to 48, I’ll be shocked if the three hosts aren’t all auto bids.

Three hosts, 48 teams: how the 226 World Cup will work | Football | The Guardian Guardian reports say the plan is for MetLife Stadium in New York to host the final. While it has field turf, it’s outdoors and temporary grass could be brought in if FIFA demands a natural surface. Personally, I don’t like soccer on field turf as much (the ball bounces and scoots in weird ways), but it’s everywhere in the US. Hard to avoid it.

Hard to pick against Germany. The other teams I’d have considered contenders to win the whole thing — Brazil, Argentina, France, Portugal, Spain — all have one significant flaw or another. The Germans don’t. Dark horse good team from outside the normal powers: Belgium. Small team I’m hoping for big things from: Senegal.

The more I read about this, the crazier it is. THEY PLAY PORTUGAL ON FRIDAY! In two days they’re going to walk onto a field against the reigning European champions, which features arguably the best player on the planet, and they’re going to do it with their Director of Football running the show. Crazy.

Julen Lopetegui has just taken the Real Madrid job, recently vacated by Zinedine Zidane after the Champions League final. He apparently went through the entire process without speaking to the Spanish FA, which is strange. It’s stranger that the reaction of the two parties after this went public was to have this result. What a mess.

I’d imagine they’ll demand grass for the final. Will probably deal with field turf for group stage games. They weren’t when the tournament was here in 1994, but people HATED it then, but nobody plays on that old AstroTurf anymore. Current proposal features three games on opening day: Mexico in Mexico City, USA in LA, and Canada in Toronto. All would be on grass fields available in those cities.

United Bid wins right to host 226 World Cup - Stars and Stripes FC Final tally was decisive. 135 for the North American united bid. 65 for Morocco. 1 federation voted for neither bid and asked to reopen the bid process (honestly thought that last group would be bigger given some of the talk happening before the vote). No real details yet, other than it will feature FIFA’s massive 48-team format and that they’ve not yet determined if USA,...

Louisville's card comes out second. Mid-East Regional, likely on June 20: Louisville City FC (USL) hosts Nashville SC (USL) Atlanta United (MLS) hosts Chicago Fire (MLS) The winners of those two games to play quarterfinal in either Atlanta or Chicago in early July.

They have an amazing amount of talent. I’m not an MLS guy, but under that system, Atlanta is a model for how to operate a new franchise. I saw that Andrew Carlton scored in their cup match last night. One of the most exciting young players attached to an MLS team right now.

Fifth round draw set for 11 am today. Remaining 16 teams put into four groups based roughly on geography, then a blind draw determines the matchups within the group. Louisville’s group: Louisville City FC Nashville SC Atlanta United Chicago Fire Its weird that Orlando got shipped north to play New York, Philly, DC. But Kansas City was making problems putting together a Midwest group with the Texas Teams and Minnesota. Someone that...

That’s definitely a tough way to go out. I wasn’t on board with the “Mitch Hildebrandt is the best keeper in America” vibe that seemed to be going around in Cincy a bit last year, but the guy is GREAT at facing down a penalty kick and he was sorely missed last night.

Louisville City FC 3 New England Revolution 2 My voice is just about shot. Crazy up and down game. Referee let them play too. Maybe the most purely fun game Ive ever seen Louisville play from a neutral perspective. New England rolled out a clear second choice side to start the game and Louisville took advantage. If Louisville hadn’t gifted them a couple goals by a keeper mistake and a missed clearance, Louisville would have dominated....
