They pop up all the time in one place or another. Recent events have certainly built up to a roar across the country, but every once in a while a new one will pop up about a monument or a display of the confederate flag or a name on a building. These battles have been fought on small stages for years now.

European leaders fought constantly for centuries until the end of WWII and the creation of multinational organizations specifically designed to curtail conflict and encourage cooperation. I'd be lying if I said I understood the environmental, sociological, and economic reasons why Europe was so technologically far ahead of Africa by the time of the Renaissance. I don't really have the first idea how they would have progressed had history...

The No. 4 spot for a 2A team in Louisville is bold, but CAL has been really good lately. After South Oldham, they play at least two other 5A/6A teams in the area. Should be pretty well tested come playoff time.

It's a strange question to ask, that begs the justification of evil, but one that's very difficult to answer even considered in a vacuum. Would poverty in Africa be as bad as it is now if colonialism (and the slave trade that was a part of it) hadnt shredded the continent to bits for five centuries?

I'm not willing to be nearly as indulgent of memorials to those political leaders as I am of those remembering soldiers.

I was 22 years old before I'd ever heard of the Cornerstone Speech. Talk about a complete failure of education. Impossible to have any real discussion of the Confederacy without it.

Some do the job better than others. They're definitely not all the same in that regard. The one formerly on Third Street in Louisville is a good example of how it's not really on the nose, but it always made me uneasy. The figures on the monuments are posed heroically, eternally prepared for battle. The figure atop the monument stares off wistfully. An editorial writer at the time it was erected called it a statuary embodiment of the Lost...

I think the history classes I had as a kid and in college nailed the Civil War pretty well. There is a difference between remembering the war, why it happened, its terrible consequences, etc., and enshrining the myth of an heroic Confederacy.

For me, this is strictly about the Confederacy, but I'll grant that it's perfectly legitimate to question others on a case-by-case basis.

Byrd was a member of the Klan. By 1970 he renounced the group, renounced racial division, and was publicly advocating for civil rights legislation in the senate. He's a story of coming around to the right side of history. Statues glorifying the Confederacy do not do the same thing.

Forgiveness? Sure. I hold no hatred for the individual soldiers that did nothing more than serve. This was too long ago for malice on an individual level. That's not the same as my opinion that monuments which directly or indirectly honor the cause to which their leaders were dedicated should not still be broadcasting that message in public space.

I don't think Lee served in the US Army after the war. He became president of Washington College (now Washington and Lee College) soon after the war ended.

I don't know what story you're talking about but it definitely matters. Someone who was a segregationist and racist coming around to ideas of American unity is not only perfectly acceptable but essentially praiseworthy. It should be something we want in all our leaders. "I was wrong; let me tell you why." is the kind of statement we should expect and hope for in our public figures.

Depends. Did that person later renounce the Klan and become a public advocate for Civil Rights?

Yes. They enshrine a false historical narrative that was propped up by Confederate sympathizers after the war. Far from whitewashing history, the removal of these monuments and their replacement with more appropriate ones would correct the romantic reimagining of the Confederacy that should have been obliterated from our national narrative decades ago.

It's like one step forward and another back for the folks running NASL. Two expansion teams announced to try and keep the league afloat. First, a smart move to get a team into San Diego starting next season. USL and NASL were both trying to get a foothold there. But second, a team in Orange County, Calif., where there is ALREADY a USL team and they're really close to TWO MLS teams in Los Angeles. Who came up with that plan? That right...

He might just end up as one of those guys. I hope not. He never made it back into regular rotation at Hertha Berlin after his last injury which led him to end up in Wolfsburg in the first place. He'd have been a big part of things if the US was going to try and roll out that 3-4-3 we saw against Mexico in June come the next round of qualifiers. I trust that formation a lot more with Brooks off to Cameron's left than probably anyone else. I...

What's crazy is that the whole run for FCC started by barely escaping an NPSL team, AFC Cleveland, in extra time. It's why this tournament is so great. Talent will win out over the course of a full season, but almost anything can happen in single elimination.

Heck of a run by FCC. First Second Division side to make the semis since the Richmond Kickers in 2011, I think. Saw a clip of what appeared to be a clearance off the line late in extra time. That close.

I agree. And with San Francisco Deltas on the ropes financially and FC Edmonton having major doubts about continued travel expenditures, I think it's probably going to work sooner rather than later. They need at least a couple new teams to keep the thing afloat and I don't know where they'll come from. AFC Cleveland and Detroit City FC would seem two prime candidates to go pro, but I don't know if the cash is there. If North Carolina and...

Also, if you weren't paying attention last week, the league made a boatload of expansion announcements. In addition to the previously announced Nashville FC, Las Vegas and Fresno were both announced to begin play in 2018. Austin and Birmingham will join the league in 2019. Announcements are not expected to be finished yet and I think they'll add at least one more for the 2019 group before the year is out.

A wonky lineup is to be expected ahead of a massive Cup game like FCC is facing, but that front three definitely stood out to me. I'm ultimately somewhat accustomed to is as I've never seen a coach constantly tinker with his lineup the way James O'Connor does in Louisville. I can only think of maybe two occasions where he's played the same eleven guys one week that he had the week before. That said, replace Niall McCabe on that right side...

Meant to ask this yesterday: I assume he held Konig out for the Open Cup but does Djiby normally not play in the center of that front three? He was on the left side at the start of the game.

We're around 2/3 of the way through the season at this point, so here are some updated points per game standings through this past weekend to give us some idea of the table, taking the disparities in total games played into account: Team/Games Played/Points/PPG 1) Louisville City FC 20/38/1.90 2) Charlotte Independence 22/40/1.82 3) Rochester Rhinos 21/35/1.67 4) Charleston Battery 23/38/1.65 5) Tampa Bay Rowdies 23/37/1.61 6)...
