Here's a closer look at each opening round game of the 16th Region Boys' Basketball Tournament. Rowan County (16-16) vs. Raceland (12-16): After knocking off Bath County to win the 61st District championship, Rowan County is matched up against 63rd District runner-up Raceland in the opening round of the 16th Region Boys' Basketball Tournament. The Tomcats are on a 12-game winning streak. Ethan Sellars and Colin Porter are each averaging nearly 18 points per game for the Tomcats. Closing in on 20 wins, Ashland is scheduled to meet Russell, Rowan County and Paintsville in the week ahead. 2. Boyd County (15-4): The Lions remained in the win column, upending Russell. Boyd County, Raceland and Fleming County also notched two wins during the opening week of the 2021-22 boys' high school basketball season. An updated look at the 16th Region boys' basketball teams follows. 1. Ashland (2-1): The Tomcats opened the 2021-22 boys' high school basketball season with back-to-back wins over Lewis County and North Gwinnett (Ga.) before suffering a loss to Ballard. Through Ashland's first two games, Ethan Sellars was averaging 26.5 points. The Tomcats are scheduled to host Rose Hill Christian on Tuesday, Dec. 7. 2. Boyd County (2-0): The Lions are 2-0 after defeating Montgomery County in a season opener and claiming a COVID cancelation win over perennial 15th Region title contender Johnson Central. Brad Newsome netted 22 points to lead Boyd County to a win in its season opener. The Lions are scheduled to visit Fairview on Tuesday, Dec. 7, prior to hosting the Boyd County Roundball Classic Friday, Dec. 10-Saturday, Dec. 11. 3. Russell (0-1): The Red Devils dropped their season opener to Martin County and haven't played since. Brady Bell poured in a game-high 38 points for Russell in the season opener. Russell is scheduled to host Bath County in the EKC Tournament on Tuesday, Dec. 7. 4. Raceland (2-1): The Rams notched back-to-back wins over Dawson Bryant (Ohio) and Fairview before falling to Lawrence County. Through three games, Andrew Floyd is averaging 18 points for Raceland. The Rams have upcoming games scheduled versus Elliott County and Morgan County. 5. Rowan County (1-1): The Vikings dropped a season opener to Mason County but bounced back to beat Lewis County in the EKC Tournament. Through two games, Chase Alderman is averaging a double-double of 24.5 points and 17 rebounds per game for the Vikings. Rowan County will continue to compete in the EKC Tournament this week. 6. Bath County (1-1): After beating Bluegrass United in a season opener, Bath County dropped a game to Lawrence County. Through two games, Zachary Otis is averaging 22.5 points and seven rebounds per game for the Wildcats. 7. Fleming County (2-1): Former 16th Region frontrunner Fleming County won two of its first three games in the 2021-22 boys' high school basketball season, notching wins over Nicholas County and Fairview. The Panthers suffered a loss to Mason County in between the wins. Jayden Argo erupted for 30 points in Fleming County's win over Nicholas County in the season opener. 8. Lewis County (0-3): The Lions dropped three games during the first week of the 2021-22 boys' high school basketball season, falling to Ashland, Augusta and Rowan County. Through three games, Logan Liles is averaging 21 points for Lewis County. The Lions are scheduled to visit West Carter on Wednesday, Dec. 8. 9. Elliott County (0-1): Perennial 16th Region All 'A' title contender Elliott County started strong in its season opener but faltered as much-improved Floyd Central battled back to win 73-56. Elliott County will be looking to bounce back at home in a matchup versus Raceland on Monday, Dec. 6. 10. Fairview (1-2): Following a busy first week in the 2021-22 boys' high school basketball season, Fairview is 1-2. The Eagles defeated Greenup County in a season opener before dropping back-to-back games to Raceland and Fleming County. Jaxon Manning is averaging 24.7 points per game for Fairview, which is scheduled to host Boyd County, Elliott County and Nicholas County in the second week of the 2021-22 boys' high school basketball season. 11. West Carter (0-0): The Comets are slated to host Lewis County for a season opener on Wednesday, Dec. 8. 12. East Carter (0-0): The Raiders are scheduled to make a 2021-22 season debut against Rowan County in the EKC Tournament on Tuesday, Dec. 7. 13. Greenup County (1-2): Greenup County is 1-2 through its first three games in the 2021-22 season. In between losses to Fairview and South Point (Ohio), Greenup County recorded a COVID cancelation win over Menifee County. The Musketeers are scheduled to face Fleming County, Wheelersburg and Pendleton County in week two. 14. Morgan County (1-2): Following back-to-back losses to Lawrence County and Powell County, Morgan County outlasted Rose Hill Christian 57-56. Morgan County is poised to face Magoffin County and Raceland in the second week of the 2021-22 season. 15. Chase Pennington (14.5 ppg) and Christian Blevins (14.0 ppg) are combining to lead Rose Hill Christian. The Royals have upcoming games scheduled versus Ashland, Prestonsburg and Bath County. 16. Menifee County (0-3): After dropping its season opener to Owsley County, Menifee County suffered back-to-back COVID cancelation losses to Nicholas County and 16th Region rival Greenup County. But rival Boyd County is among the teams looking to dethrone the Tomcats during the 2021-22 boys' high school basketball season. A look at the 16th Region boys' basketball teams follows. 1. Ashland (22-5): Reigning 16th Region champion Ashland has reloaded for the 2021-22 boys' high school basketball season. The talented trio of Cole Villers (22.7 ppg, 5.1 rpg), Colin Porter (17.8 ppg) and Ethan Sellars (13.5 ppg) is back to lead the Tomcats. Over the offseason, Ashland also added James Mayor, a 6-9 sophomore who transferred from Bath County. 2. Boyd County (15-10): Despite losing eight seniors to graduation, Boyd County remains a 16th Region boys' basketball title contender. Boyd County finished runner-up to rival Ashland in the 64th District and reached the 16th Region Semifinals during the 2020-21 season. Leading scorer Rheyce Deboard (14.2 ppg) is back for Boyd County, which also returns Brad Newsome (7.3 ppg). 3. Russell (12-8): The Red Devils are a team on the rise in the 16th Region. Russell will be looking to contend for both a 63rd District championship and a 16th Region title during the 2021-22 boys' high school basketball season. Brady Bell (18.3 ppg, 6.2 rpg) and Griffin Downs (9.9 ppg, 6.1 rpg) are the top players back for the Red Devils. 4. Lewis County (14-9): Reigning 63rd District champion Lewis County won't be looking to relinquish its top spot. The Lions will also be looking to climb up the 16th Region rankings as well. Logan Liles (15.4 ppg) and Trey Gerike (12.2 ppg) are back to lead defending 63rd District champion Lewis County. 5. Raceland (11-8): The Rams are expected to make a push for a 63rd District championship. Andrew Floyd (12.5 ppg) and Kyle Broughton (10.0 ppg) are back to lead Raceland, which finished as the runner-up to Lewis County in the 2020-21 63rd District Boys' Basketball Tournament. 6. Rowan County (15-4): The Vikings will be looking to reload instead of rebuild in the 2021-22 boys' high school basketball season. Seniors Chase Alderman (9.1 ppg, 7.9 rpg) and Cody Collins (3.1 ppg) are the experienced players back for Rowan County. Remaining the 61st District favorite heading into the latest boys' high school basketball season, Rowan County will have multiple newcomers in its lineup and rotation. 7. Bath County (7-16): Rejuvenated Bath County has made four straight trips to the 16th Region Boys' Basketball Tournament. A contender for the 61st District title, Bath County returns four starters. Zack Otis (24.4 ppg) is the top player back for the Wildcats. Joining Otis, Jordan Wilson (12.7 ppg) and Tyler Buckhanon (6-7) will help to pace Bath County. 8. Elliott County (8-10): The 62nd District's top squad heading into the 2021-22 season, Elliott County is among the best shooting teams in the 16th Region. Elliott County is a perennial contender for the 16th Region All "A" Classic championship. Twins Gatlin Griffith (8.8 ppg) and Eli Griffith (5.1 ppg) combine to lead the Lions. 9. Fleming County (6-14): With four players that averaged double figures in scoring back, frontrunner Fleming County could be the 16th Region's most improved boys' basketball team early in the 2021-22 season. Jayden Argo (12.7 ppg, 7.6 rpg), Landen Lutz (11.4 ppg), Adam Hargett (11.1 ppg) and Lucas Jolly (10.7 ppg) are all back for the Panthers. 10. Fairview (7-20): Fairview returns an experienced group, which includes seven seniors, one of whom is leading scorer Jaxon Manning (23.1 ppg). Along with Manning, Steven Day (9.8 ppg, 5.0 rpg) is back for the Eagles. Fairview will be looking to vie for the 16th Region All "A" Classic championship in early-2022. 11. West Carter (13-7): After nearly upsetting Ashland in the 16th Region Boys' Basketball Tournament Semifinals, West Carter lost five of its top scorers to graduation. However, Landon Nichols (7.2 ppg, 4.8 rpg) and Jackson Bond are back for the Comets. Bond has returned to the court after tearing his ACL five games into the 2020-21 season. 12. East Carter (6-5): COVID prevented East Carter from playing a dozen or more games in the 2020-21 season. Connor Goodman (11.7 ppg) and Evan Goodman (8.8 ppg), brothers, return to lead the Raiders. 13. Greenup County (5-17): With its roster from the 2020-21 season intact, Greenup County is poised to show improvement in the upcoming boys' high school basketball season. Trenton Hannah (12.5 ppg), Boone Gibson (9.0 ppg), Beau Barker (8.6 ppg) and Carson Wireman (8.0 ppg) have returned for the Musketeers. 14. Morgan County (8-5): Also limited to COVID, Morgan County won eight of its 12 regular-season games during the 2020-21 season. The top two players back for the Cougars are Levi Mayabb (14.3 ppg) and Logan Spencer (7.8 ppg). 15. Rose Hill Christian (7-20): An experienced team is back for Rose Hill Christian as no players were lost to graduation. Stacey Jackson (23.1 ppg), Luke Larsen (11.1 ppg), Tate Akers (9.4 ppg) and Chase Pennington (8.6 ppg, 7.0 rpg) are each back for the Knights. 16. Menifee County (1-24): After edging 14th Region member Powell County for its only win in the 2020-21 boys' high school basketball season, Menifee County is expected to show improvement early during the upcoming campaign. Four players reached double figures in scoring as University Heights outlasted Madisonville-North Hopkins 63-61 on the Maroons' home floor in the 2nd Region Boys' Basketball Tournament title game on Saturday, March 27. After notching the win, University Heights advances to the KHSAA Boys' Sweet 16 State Basketball Tournament. University Heights improved to 15-9 following the win. Following the loss, Madisonville-North Hopkins ended its season 16-5. Amani McGee netted a game-high 22 points to lead University Heights to the win. Accompanying McGee in double figures for the Blazers, William Bryan scored 13 points, DJ Quarles added 11 points and KJ Crump contributed 10 points. University Heights, Madisonville-North Hopkins, Henderson County and Hopkinsville each won games in the opening round of the 2nd Region Boys' Basketball Tournament. Hopkinsville edged frontrunner Lyon County 58-56 during the opening round of the 2nd Region Boys' Basketball Tournament in Eddyville. It was the Lyons' lone loss to a 2nd Region team in the 2020-21 boys' high school basketball season. In the 2nd Region Boys' Basketball Tournament Semifinals it was University Heights 69, Henderson County 53 and Madisonville-North Hopkins 66, Hopkinsville 65. Avoiding a loss in the opening round of the 2nd Region Boys' Basketball Tournament, University Heights pushed past Crittenden County 80-79. Crump (17.1 ppg), Quarles (16.7 ppg), McGee (14.2 ppg) and Bryan (10.2 ppg) are each averaging double figures in scoring for University Heights. Head coach Grant Shouse guides the Blazers.
