  1. Interesting quirk in the pitch count rules. If you throw 76 on Wed, you need three days rest, and can't pitch on Saturday. If you throw 76 in the morning on Saturday, you can come back later in the day for 44 more. So, the rain and playing two games in a day may actually work to Beechwood/Dixie's advantage. If either team gets up, they can pull their starter and save what's left of his 120 pitches for the day for game 2. But the NCC guy who who threw 76+ on Wed cannot come back at all on Saturday.
  2. Tim Shields, Conner...20 plus years, over 300 wins...followed up with almost 20 years with Thomas More.
  3. Yes, the pitch count rule prevents coaches from extreme over use. I do believe, however, that many high school pitchers are at risk of serious injury well before they get to the max count. Several things I hear from coaches fairly often: "if I stay within pitch count rules, it must be safe or they wouldn't allow that many pitches in one game". A variation..."it must be OK to come back and again throw the max on the fourth day, since its allowed". "The kid threw the max last time out and didn't hurt his arm. That tells me the kid is in good enough shape to throw the max again without risk." Some coaches I guess actually believe it when they say those kinds of things. Others however, just use them as an excuse to feed their own need to win, knowing full well they are risking a kids arm in what they are doing. Even for the most well meaning coaches, the decision whether to pull a kid before he hits the max is not always easy. A simple question can help..."what would I do if it were my own kid?"
  4. Maddie did not return to the game...up and down and reasonably mobile, but on the bench for the second half...at one point it looked like she was pleading with the trainer to let her back in (good for her) Here's my guess...I'm not a trainer, and saw this one from 15 rows up...but I have been around a while. I'm guessing mild knee sprain. not wrapped in ice, like she would have been with something more severe on the knee. No tape on the ankle, which is why I'm guessing knee. Recovery time? who knows...my prayer is she's able to finish her high school career at full speed, on the court with her teammates.
  5. Nd 10 ryle 8 end qtr 1...scherr out 2 minutes in to game...looked like knee...she's in the locker room
  6. Well, WV is my new "go to" team. Incredibly strong performance today. Look forward to seeing them again against a strong local team. Coach C ran a box and one on 22, using a physical guard as the chaser. 22 did not get a single touch in their half court offense til 4 minutes left in the game! All the best to them tomorrow...do they have enough emotional energy left to handle the assault Bethlehem will bring? Bethlehem runs the court really really well.
  7. Yes, it is. I didn't realize they had a Ky commit until you mentioned it and I looked her up. She's only a sophomore, I think, so lots of upside potential to be developed before she walks on the court at UK. Apparently she's just coming off injury - from the stats she has only played in a few games, and has less than 10 shots on the year. I'm guessing she played very little yesterday...I've been around enough to recognize a D1 player, especially a Ky recruit. I hope her recovery continues well. I saw all four games yesterday, and they run together a bit. From what I remember WV was in an extended 2-3, in hindsight probably a match up of sorts to keep the shooters from getting a good look. SV did a lot of dribble drive - I remember thinking I really liked what they were doing on offense...they just couldn't hit. But, WV closed well on the ball without losing shooters in help. From what I remember at least.
  8. I was there, just as a fan - drove down for the day - no rooting interest other than I like to see local northern teams do well... For those of you who are want to give lots of credit to the coaching staff, I would 100% agree with you. First time I've seen them in a couple years, but they are as I remember them...tough, disciplined on both ends of the court. Score was 26-9 WV at the half and they were up 18 half way thru the third. WV defense was almost suffocating - SV is not strong in the middle - WV did an excellent job of not letting shooters get good looks (good coaching). SV decided to go in to a frenetic on ball and total denial trapping man. They were able to create a fair amount of turnovers, and got to within 3 with about three minutes to go. Turnovers are going to happen against that kind of defense. The only learning I see for WV is shot selection. Layups are available against that kind of defense if you can be patient...WV seemed too content to take a contested midrange jumper immediately after breaking the first line of the defense. The good news for tomorrow and Sunday hopefully - they only gave up 31 points to a pretty good team, and probably 20 were in transition created by the frenetic defense. Here's my fearless forecast for tomorrow...WV by 3 in a very low scoring game - over/under at 66. Owensboro is a half court team - if 44 on WV can be physical on 22 for OC (their D1 stud) without fouling, OC will not score alot of points.
  9. You're right...could have been any of those. This was the Campbell County version of "CC".
  10. I have no link to either team - just went to the game to see high school basketball played at a high level. I wasn't disappointed. If these two teams played five times on a neutral court one would win three, the other two. Don't ask me which would win that series - I don't have a clue. I would agree that Ryle could be stronger defensively. They're good, certainly caused Conner some problems with their press late, which surprised me a little. But they could be really great at defense with all their length and athleticism. Against MND they struggled some in half court defense, overplaying hurt them. Last night it was transition defense, not getting back. When Ryle's point takes the ball to the hole, someone else has to rotate back. Against Conner I'd send at least two back - forgo the offensive rebounds - Conner is really good on getting out. But, getting back when the point takes the ball to the basket requires communication - lot of talking, lot of pointing. Didn't see it, at least from the upper level. Also, find the shooters in transition...too much dribble penetration for Conner off weak close outs. Ryle is an impressive team - they have a couple weeks to get even better. Yes, it's really easy to coach from the stands, but I think cranking it up on defense will go a long way in getting them where they want to go.
  11. I was there... Two excellent basketball teams...both could do well at the state level, although I don't think either is as good now as Mercer was at the end of last year. It was 10 points +/- 3 from 5 minutes in til 5 minutes left when Ryle was down 13 and tried to do some high risk things defensively to get back in it. The difference in the game was defense - MND defended the ball exceptionally well - allowed very little dribble penetration, leading to lots of contested shots for Ryle. Ryle was more aggressive, often overplayed, and looked to double. They got a few turnovers, but they did got beat alot, help didn't always get there. Plus it destroyed their rebounding positioning - MND must have had 20+ offensive rebounds. Ryle also had no defensive answer inside for MND's bigs (40 points). Scherr was clearly the best player on the floor, even though there were probably 5-6 eventual d1's out there. She got 2 early fouls but played through it well even on defense. On offense I'd like to see her post up more - the bigs aren't quick enough to stop her without fouling, the guards are mostly too small. Didn't see her with her back to the basket once. I do think Ryle will likely beat most anyone who tries to go up tempo with them - having the best player on the floor always will give them an edge. They may struggle against a half court team with a couple bigs and someone who can contain Scherr a little (ala Holy Cross a few years back)..
  12. why not just seed Regionals, and draw in order of seed. Eliminate Districts, make it a true one and out. In the 10th, I'm pretty sure the top 4 would be playing each other in the third round of the tourney; 4 of the top 5 in the 9th. The problem causing third round mismatches is the District setup, not the lack of Classes. Yes, I'm from Ohio. What I'm describing seems to work well there.
  13. All MLB contracts cover college expenses. Typical amount is enough for 4 years of tuition at a state school, plus some living expenses. Player must start within a couple years of the end of their pro career.
  14. I know "seed vs draw" has been beaten to death, but here's a different take. If I were the coach of St Pat or Augusta, I think I would vote to seed. Yes, I understand that dooms us to a one and done drilling in the tournament every year. And, I understand a draw offers the opportunity for a competitive state tournament game once every three years, on average. If we happen to win that first game, there is at least some basis for a sense of accomplishment. Yet, the morning after that win, when reality sets in, all we have to look forward to is another week of basketball and the certainty of two drillings before its over, in the District Final and the regional. That's not good for the seniors nor for the program to end that way. Someone mentioned they hope the St Pat girls enjoy their regional experience. I respect the sentiment, and wish it could be true. But, they won't. No one looks forward to the embarrassment of getting drilled, especially on a large stage in front of a large audience.
