CovCath (9-0) looks to wrap up its second straight unbeaten regular season by welcoming Campbell County (6-3). Last year's meeting, their first since 2012, resulted in a 49-13 victory for the Colonels.

The Bearcats (7-2) have pitched a 2A best six shutouts so far this season. Bellevue (5-4) has held four opponents to under 10 points, but have also given up their share against the better teams on their schedule.

DeSales (8-1) wound up with the 2 seed in their district, but still has a few obstacles in their way before they can think about another shot at CAL. Southern (4-5) should provide the Colts with an opportunity to get in a little more leg work before the start of the postseason.

CAL (9-0) gets one final tune-up before the second season begins. The Centurions welcome the Chargers of Bullitt East (3-6). CAL beat the Chargers 28-7 last year.

This is one of the better inter-class regular season finales in the state this week. Obviously, Mayfield (9-0) is Mayfield. But Caldwell County (7-2) has been playing extremely well of late. The Cards have dominated most of their rivals in recent years, but Caldwell does have three wins in this series in the past decade.

Rematch of last year's D2 championship game. This will serve as a good look at the probable future of 4A.

After weeks of anticipation for the “Battle of Bowling Green”, the night finally came and went. It started out rather uneventful. But by game's end, the outcome proved incredibly eventful for the victors. The two teams were ranked #2 and #3 all season, though with each passing week more and more folks believed the order should have been reversed. Each team had a stellar quarterback. Each team had a high level, blue chip recruit. Talent was...

I caught the end of the game on the radio. Dicky was less than pleased with the fact that Matney chose to pad the final margin rather than take a couple of knees. I doubt they'll be exchanging Christmas cards this year. And I doubt that Matney cares one bit what Dicky thinks of him. I'm going to miss the chippiness that's accompanied this series over the years.

Every time I think I have a bead on who has the edge in this rivalry, it goes the other way. Paintsville would host a likely playoff rematch, and most people will probably give them the edge if that game comes to pass. So, naturally Raceland will prevail. This series has been one of the best small school rivalries in the state over the past four years. I don't look for that to change any time soon.

    - Tremendous effort from the Red Devils tonight. The QB keepers were working all game long for Russell. I don't think Wilburn's ever had a game like this with his legs before. This game was a throwback to the old days when Russell only went to the air when they had to. And they didn't have to tonight. - The defense did a great job keeping Swartz fenced in. This was probably his worst game in a couple of years. Other than the kickoff return,...

Quarterbacks Beau Buchanan, Bowling Green (7-1, ranked #2 in 5A) Week 8: Last Friday night was a night to forget if you are in any way, shape, or form associated with Bowling Green football. The Purples were simply outclassed in every way by Warren Central (IN). Buchanan must have felt like he was playing against the ‘85 Bears. He finished 11 of 27 for 40 yards and a TD. Season to date: 142 of 236 for 1,695 yards and 17 TDs with 4 ints....

I was watching Highlands versus CovCath over the weekend and was struck by the sheer size and athleticism of #87. I've said this before, but he looks like he's ready to suit up for Notre Dame right now. His physique suggests a college junior, not a high school junior. When I think of prototype TEs from NKY, Highlands great Derek Smith immediately comes to mind. Size, athleticism, hands… Smith seemingly had the total package, as does Mayer. As...

How far can the Jumpers’ defense take them this year? They've pitched four shutouts, held Hazard to their lowest point total of the season, and held Raceland to their second lowest. They've only giving up about 144 yards per game, ranking them among the best in the class.

Russell's run defense has been stout (giving up about 30 ypg) during this five game win streak. They'll be put to the test this Friday. Swartz has had a couple of standout games against Russell. A poor start like they had last week could really hurt them versus Bath. It looks like the Wildcats have made strides in the passing game. Swartz is still Plan A. But it looks like they at least have a Plan B now, which is one more plan than they've...
