To the best of my recollection, I was pretty much a straight A student from my first day of school up through the midway point of my 4th grade school year. It was at that point that I received my first ever C on a report card. Mrs. Ratliff had rendered her verdict… young DMC didn't do math good. I was terror stricken at the idea of handing that wretched report card over to my mother. I just knew that I was a dead man walking. I took my sweet...

This sort of thing happened to Highlands during their peak years under Mueller, correct? There weren't many (any?) non-district NKY schools on the Birds schedule during those years. So there is a precedent for it? Edit: And by "it" I mean, NKY schools that didn't have to play Highlands taking their ball and going home.

ATL, out of curiosity, what do you think about my thoughts above? Any chance Matney ends up back on Pond Creek?

Yep. Matney's a Belfry guy. Ten years ago, I would have pegged him to be Haywood's successor. But now, given Haywood's longevity and what Matney's built at JC, the odds are probably against it ever happening.

Despite winning by big margins, I thought LCA looked relatively ho-hum through their first three games. But they've really turned it on the last two weeks. I look for them to continue that high level of play this week against a very good, but probably overmatched KCD squad.

Christian Academy-Louisville's first four games gave us a pretty good indication that the Centurions were worthy of the top ranking in 2A. Week 0 saw a dominating defensive performance over a good South Oldham squad that's been rolling ever since that loss. CAL followed that up with convincing wins over back to back 6A opponents and 3A #4 Elizabethtown. Newport Central Catholic looked solid, if not great, out of the gate against an improved...

Overall, the district appears a little better this year, which is good to see. Pendleton's already got as many wins this year as they had the last two years combined. I think Lewis County's at least as good as last year. They've scored 56 and 46 points in their last two games. That's their best offensive output in three years. However, I do look for the same four teams to make the playoffs again this year.

I'm not sure about the extent of Jaeden's injury, but initially, it didn't look good. As far as Nathan Brinkman goes, him leaving games because of his shoulder is something that might be a regular occurrence for the rest of the season. He seems to heal up enough between games to give it a go the following week, so he might be back out there on Friday. This senior class has dealt with more injuries than any I can remember at Russell in a long...

This is one of those games where you just hope your team takes care of business early and makes it out free of injury.

My first thought for a comparison was Simon Kenton, but my gut tells me that even a down Elder would handle the Pioneers. That 3-0 start by Elder is going to evaporate quickly over the next few weeks. They got bombed out by St. Eds and have St. Ignatius, St. X (Cinci), Moeller, and LaSalle still to come. Depending on how good the team from Georgia is that they play on Oct. 20th, they could lose out. There's no rest for the weary in Ohio D1...

This will be a tough one for KCD. LCA looks like a complete team offensively. They can consistently move the chains behind Wheatley's power running and the short passing game or they can go quick strike to Burton over the top. Their balance and playmakers just put so much pressure on a defense. I kind of wish PrepSpin would stream this game. I'd like to see a KCD game this year.

I'll acknowledge that "major letdown" was a bit strong, but FS had to be very disappointed with that result against Meade County considering the result they had the week before. It's not as if Meade is a great 6A team, like the one they had in 2013. Greenwood is by no means a great team either, but they returned a lot from last year's team and had high expectations. They got drubbed by FS with a score that certainly grabbed my attention. I...

This is a tough call right now. - Belfry, Corbin, and Boyle County all have what you might call "good" or "quality" losses. - Corbin has the best win, vs. Alcoa. Two weeks later, Alcoa gave powerhouse Maryville all they could handle before falling 28-24, making the win for Corbin look even better. - Central has played, arguably, the toughest schedule and has taken their lumps the past two weeks. - No one's had better results...

The Jumpers (3-2) have put together a good run of results lately... Wins over ranked opponents Williamsburg, Hazard, and North Laurel and a close loss to Beechwood. Rockcastle County (4-0) can't get caught looking ahead to next week's ultra important district showdown with Wayne County. The Rockets piled up 365 rushing yards in a 42-13 win over Harrison County in Week 4.

Walton Verona (3-2) waded into the deep waters of 2A and discovered that they're not quite ready for primetime. The Bearcats took one on the chin against #5 LCA, 48-13. They'll now pay a visit to district foe Owen County (3-1). The Rebels are coming off an open week after a solid win over 1A Fairview.

The Aces (2-3) are still searching for themselves after a 31-24 loss to cross town rival Apollo. Ocath had owned the series since 2010. Owensboro Catholic now begins its district slate against a winless (0-5) Butler County team. The Bears put together arguably their best performance of the season last week, an eight point loss to Muhlenberg County.

After being handed their first loss a week ago, Glasgow (4-1) bounced back to go on the road and gut out a two point win at Warren East. Franklin Simpson (2-3) suffered a major letdown after throttling 6A Greenwood 63-6 in Week 3. The Wildcats fell to 6A Meade County 21-14 in a game that has to be a major disappointment for Coach Doug Preston's team coming on the heels of such an impressive performance a week earlier.

The Ads (5-0) got more than they bargained for from a very athletic Waggener squad in Week 4. Apparently, defense was optional in Louisville as Danville prevailed over the Wildcats 46-41. Garrard County (3-2) defeated East Jessamine 18-13 on Friday night with the help of 2 TD runs by RB Josh Warren.
