Quarterbacks Beau Buchanan, Bowling Green (9-3, lost in the Second Round) Second Round: An uneven season plagued by ill timed penalties and questionable hands from Purples receivers came to a close at Owensboro. Buchanan closed out his great career with a couple of touchdown passes in defeat. Season to date: 176 of 295 for 2,050 yards and 25 TDs with 6 ints. Stock: <>

Johnson Central High School is the result of a consolidation of the Van Lear, Meade Memorial, Oil Springs, and Flat Gap school districts in the late 60’s. First season with a football team was 1970. From the early days of the football program through the early 2000’s, they had more losing seasons than winning seasons. Outside of a few notable years under Ed Vanhoose in the late 70’s and Bill Musick in the late 90’s through the early 00’s, there...

These two fierce rivals are squaring off with a regional championship on the line for the third year in a row. Johnson Central (11-1) is seeking its fourth straight trip to the semifinals, while Ashland (11-1) is hoping to practice on Thanksgiving for the first time since 1990. Jim Matney’s boys have mostly dominated the Tomcats since he arrived in Paintsville back in 2004, going 13-3 against Ashland during that time. Most years, they've...

It's hard for me to kid myself if I don't have the whole story. Now I do. I'm still taking Pikeville by three touchdowns.

This is going to be a formidable challenge for Russell to overcome. Central is possibly the best team to visit Henry R. Evans Stadium since some of Bob Lutz's great Ironton teams from the 80’s. They don't appear to have dropped off much, if at all, since their championship years under Scroggins. This is an ‘all hands on deck, and batten down the hatches’ situation for the Red Devils. As a running quarterback, Goodall is in the same class as...

A little something to chew on... Belfry is 37-3 at home in the playoffs since the CAM opened in 2005. Sheldon Clark was the last team to hand the Pirates a home playoff loss back in 2009. Belfry will defend its home turf with everything they've got. But will it be enough?

With Boyle moving up to 4A, maybe Belfry can entice them to come to the PCB sometime in the near future. Otherwise, this could be the first and last time they play for quite some time.

Even at full strength, Belfry's defense was going to have its hands full. They might have to score 60 to win this thing.

Is this the first ever meeting between these two? It's a dream matchup. Two legendary coaches, two contrasting offensive philosophies. If only both teams were at 100%, health wise. Should be a tremendous atmosphere on Pond Creek.

Red Devils exorsize some demons The signs were there… - The inability to consistently finish drives all season - The heavily one sided nature of their loss to Warren Central (IN) - The “old school” powerhouse Purples getting handled by “new school” rival South Warren

When healthy, I think Pikeville is the best team in the eastern half of 1A by at least two scores. Williamsburg has put together a great year, and that win over Hazard was one of the real eye catching scores from last Friday, but they gave up 44 points to Lynn Camp a few weeks ago. Pikeville just manhandled that same Lynn Camp squad last week in every phase. They're just rolling right now. If the Panthers overlook Williamsburg, they could be in...

Paintsville's won four straight over Raceland decided by a touchdown or less. Not sure how to explain it, but the Tigers find a way to come out on top when it's tight.

Raceland vs. Paintsville Beechwood shouldn't break much of a sweat, and I think Pikeville wins comfortably. Campbellesville and Crittenden County looks good on paper, but they don't have the recent history that Raceland/Paintsville does. The Rams and Tigers don't know how to play each other any other way than with great competitiveness.

This series is so hard to get a read on. At this point, I honestly have no idea what to expect, other than a great game. There's just so much familiarity between the players and coaching staffs. It's hard for one team to get any separation from the other.

Most people were expecting another Mayfield/Owensboro Catholic regional final. But Murray (8-4) had other plans. The Tigers rallied from a 26-0 deficit early in the second quarter to top the Aces in the second round. That win earned them a second look at Mayfield. Yay? The Cardinals (12-0) have surpassed 50 points on seven occasions this season, including a season high 63 the first time these teams met. Kent Trey Matthews ran wild in that game,...

To the surprise of absolutely no one, the annual regional final rematch between CAL (12-0) and DeSales (11-1) is on again. This makes eight consecutive years that these two teams have met twice in the same season. In five of those eight meetings, the regular season loser turned the tables in the postseason. The Centurions have allowed a 2A low 71 points and haven't really displayed any glaring vulnerabilities this season. At this juncture, CAL...

When these two met about a month ago, Somerset's defense wrapped itself around LCA like an anaconda and squeezed the Eagles into submission. LCA could only muster 48 yards of offense in their 35-0 loss to the Jumpers (10-2). Last week, it was LCA (9-3) that brought the suffocating defense, as they held one of the state's most productive rushing attacks to just 90 yards. The question is, have the Eagles come far enough in the past month to make...

Glasgow's running game, Nick Mitchell in particular, has been clicking in recent weeks. Mitchell, the #2 rusher in 2A, has averaged 170 ypg and scored 16 TDs in the six weeks since their loss to Franklin-Simpson. Behind the Scotties’ (11-1) big and talented offensive line, that running game will be a formidable challenge for their regional final opponent. After losing quite a bit of offensive production from last year, Walton-Verona (10-2) has...

The Red Devils (10-2) spoiled a potential BG/SW rematch by ridding themselves of the stranglehold that the Purples had on them. They now face the tall task of coming down from that emotional high and getting ready to do battle with the mighty Spartans of South Warren (12-0). South Warren continued to roll in the second round, posting their tenth running clock victory in twelve games. Owensboro appears to have the QB and skill people to cause the...

As expected, the Maroons (10-2) and Warriors (10-2) found their way back to each other for another go round. The first installment was a somewhat surprising Pulaski County victory. Wiley Cain threw for 352 yards and engineered a length of the field, game winning drive in the final minutes. The last two times that these teams have met in the playoffs, the team that lost the regular season game, won the rematch.

A challenging early season schedule sharpened the Tigers’ claws. They've been using those claws to rip through their last seven opponents. Fern Creek (8-4) has really stepped up their game on defense, surrendering just 8 ppg during this seven game win streak. That defense will be tested by the potent offense of South Oldham (11-1). The Dragons have averaged 48 points and roughly 400 yards per game since their season opening loss to CAL.

This was kind of a funky game. - There were lot of flags. Waggener, especially, was penalized a bunch. - Waggener attempted a halfback pass that was tipped multiple times before being corralled by the receiver and taken to the house from roughly 80 yards out. - Russell had an extra point deflect off of a helmet and wobble through the uprights. - Someone from the Waggener sideline was escorted from the premises by the police.

Some wild scores and video game statistics coming out of this region. Wandale and West last week, Allen and Dixon tonight. Boyle County seems to be the only team interested in playing any defense.

I think it depends on how much time you allow yourself between when you arrive and the opening kickoff. And, how you spend that time. I've never been a good traveler. Anytime we had a long bus ride when I played, it took me a while to rid myself of the malaise I felt from being stuck on a bus for a couple of hours or more, crammed into those seats.
