East is headed in the right direction, but they're not there yet. Greenup by 4 TDs.

Huge play by the Harlan County LBer (Joseph?) deflecting the ball on that 4th down play near the end of the game. The throw was there, but he was able to get a hand on it.

You've gotta be kidding me. How have I never heard of this before? You'd think a celebration of Colonel Sanders would be a state wide holiday in KY.

It looks like Jaeden's out this week for sure. Possibly back next week.

Conley and Sharp are pretty much full time varsity starters at this point and Jachimczuk didn't play tonight because he saw extensive action in the JV game on Monday. That might have something to do with the trickle down effect of Jaeden Layne's injury. I'm not sure if Conley or Sharp will see anymore time with the frosh team from here on out. I could maybe see them playing the Kiwanis Bowl, but I can't be 100% certain on that.

Raceland picked off Russell's QB three times, including a game winning pick-six by Caleb Rowsey with a couple of minutes left in the game.

Yes, but it's not an official term, though. This was a scheduled freshman game, but Raceland played a few sophomores and Russell started a sophomore at QB. Russell might be without some of their best players for a while, if not the rest of the freshman season. But, on the bright side, other players will be getting those reps that normally wouldn't have. It'll be better for Russell in the long run.

There will be plenty of good discussion to be had when Somerset rolls into town. That will be a great test for the Rams, and a great barometer of how they might measure up to Paintsville. I'm not sure what Dalton Daniels' status is right now, but him being out is opening up more opportunities on offense for Tanner Smith and some of the younger guys like Phelps and Jaylyn Allen. I'm not sure if that's good or bad for Paintsville's opponents....

This rivalry has quietly blossomed into one of the best small school rivalries in EKY in recent years. Raceland had control of it for years, winning 8 in a row before Chirico took the reigns in Paintsville and turned the tide in the Tiger's favor. The two games last year were very, very close. Raceland is more than capable of winning this year, but I'm afraid Paintsville might have one too many difference makers.

I don't doubt that Coach Brown will have his kids focused and ready to go. He's been coaching in Olive Hill for a long time and I'm sure he's itching to get that first win over Russell. As far as this game goes, does Rivers have the kind of arm to make Russell pay if they load the box to shut down Peyton and the rest of the running game? West hasn't had much success throwing the ball against Russell over the years, even when Braden was...

I like the idea of seeing some new opposition, though. Russell hasn't seen Lexington Catholic or Boyle County since the late 90's/early 00's. Hopefully, the Devils get the chance to face one of them, preferably at home after winning the district. I know your Wildcats took one on the chin against Wandale and Co., but I think Western Hills and Garrard County are winnable games depending on how the 1st round pairings shake out.

Giving up 41 to Waggener doesn't concern you? I know Waggener's got speed to burn, but still. LCA looms in the distance. I can't help but wonder what they'd do against the Ads with the personnel they've got on offense.

Raceland looks ahead of schedule, especially on D, but they're not yet the complete offensive team that they were last year. Conversely, Portsmouth West looks better all the way around compared to last year's squad. I'm expecting a competitive ball game in Ramland on Friday.

To the best of my recollection, I was pretty much a straight A student from my first day of school up through the midway point of my 4th grade school year. It was at that point that I received my first ever C on a report card. Mrs. Ratliff had rendered her verdict… young DMC didn't do math good. I was terror stricken at the idea of handing that wretched report card over to my mother. I just knew that I was a dead man walking. I took my sweet...

This sort of thing happened to Highlands during their peak years under Mueller, correct? There weren't many (any?) non-district NKY schools on the Birds schedule during those years. So there is a precedent for it? Edit: And by "it" I mean, NKY schools that didn't have to play Highlands taking their ball and going home.

ATL, out of curiosity, what do you think about my thoughts above? Any chance Matney ends up back on Pond Creek?

Yep. Matney's a Belfry guy. Ten years ago, I would have pegged him to be Haywood's successor. But now, given Haywood's longevity and what Matney's built at JC, the odds are probably against it ever happening.

Despite winning by big margins, I thought LCA looked relatively ho-hum through their first three games. But they've really turned it on the last two weeks. I look for them to continue that high level of play this week against a very good, but probably overmatched KCD squad.

Christian Academy-Louisville's first four games gave us a pretty good indication that the Centurions were worthy of the top ranking in 2A. Week 0 saw a dominating defensive performance over a good South Oldham squad that's been rolling ever since that loss. CAL followed that up with convincing wins over back to back 6A opponents and 3A #4 Elizabethtown. Newport Central Catholic looked solid, if not great, out of the gate against an improved...

Overall, the district appears a little better this year, which is good to see. Pendleton's already got as many wins this year as they had the last two years combined. I think Lewis County's at least as good as last year. They've scored 56 and 46 points in their last two games. That's their best offensive output in three years. However, I do look for the same four teams to make the playoffs again this year.

I'm not sure about the extent of Jaeden's injury, but initially, it didn't look good. As far as Nathan Brinkman goes, him leaving games because of his shoulder is something that might be a regular occurrence for the rest of the season. He seems to heal up enough between games to give it a go the following week, so he might be back out there on Friday. This senior class has dealt with more injuries than any I can remember at Russell in a long...

This is one of those games where you just hope your team takes care of business early and makes it out free of injury.
