Little heads up. Owensboro Middle School 7th grade team beat BG Middle 40-0 and 8th grade beat BG Middle with Vito Tisdale 38 - 36. OMS 7th and 8th are undefeated through 5 games and the 7th grade has scored 236 points and allowed 0. 8th grade team has a back named Monte Owlsley that Vito could not catch and stopped trying to chase him. Future is bright for Owensboro.

Would Purple88 or Dragonfire answer this question for me. What effect, if any, has the emergence of South Warren as a football power had on Bowling Green getting the best players into their program? Also, in the past, could you go to any school you wanted to no matter that it was not in your school district or was that just a rumor I heard? Thanks

I believe this game comes down to defense. Owensboro only rushed 3 players against Zuberer and sent everybody else back in coverage against Owensboro Catholic. BG's quarterback in no Zuberer. Owensboro's run defense is much better than last years so I believe they will stop the off tackle runs that hurt them last year. If the offense can limit penalties and hold on to the ball, Owensboro 21, BG 7.

OHS went into the scrimmage against Madisonville and Graves County with no preparation for either team. Plus we play Madisonville and Graves County both so you are not going to show your hand so not much in the play calling. However, Zach Gross did a good job as a first-time starter at quarterback. OHS has great speed and the defense did a good job. The line is big and did well for the first time out. This team is ready to finish what they started last year. Warren Central better strap it on tight. OHS 28 - Warren Central 7.

GCHS and Voice of Reason have valid points that I agree with wholeheartedly. However, this is the system we have in place. Take youth baseball for example. You start off in the spring and play all summer. Then you add in new leagues like a wooden bat league that starts at the same time football begins. Then you have an indoor league. Add in that some play in multiple leagues at the same time. Throw in travel ball and kids play over 100 games a year. 13-14 olds are now getting Tommy John surgery because it helps their pitching. Soccer, basketball, softball and volleyball do the same thing. It is not right but it is reality. The 12 year old may not be thinking scholarships but the parents are. My 4.2 gpa daughter with get the scholarships. But what if you have a 3.0., some money but not enough. Parents looking at $10,000+ a year. The parents want athletic scholarships and will push their kids into the sport that best suits their needs and will not waste time on ones that won't. We will spend big money on camps and equipment to make our children standout to coaches and scouts. Reality

The 12 year old today is not the 12 year old of 30 years ago. 30 years ago we played every sport offered because there were seasons. Football started in July and ended in November or December. Last year, my son started football lifting 2 weeks after the season ended so he had 6 weeks last year away from football. Now with sports being year around, that 12 year old has to make decisions like what is the best way to get a college scholarship. They are under a lot of pressure from the coaching staff as well. An acquaintance, whose daughter attended a small private school, told me that her volleyball coach gave her an ultimatum, volleyball or fast-pitch softball. She retired from softball in the 8th grade.

Middle school football is just another step in the development of a football player. Unfortunately it is the end of "feel good" sports where everyone is guaranteed playing time and everyone gets a participant ribbon. Players play and those who don't have the physical skills and the ability don't get a lot of playing time. It is a time for kids to learn how to work hard, compete and get better. You learn whether you have the desire to play or would your time be better spent on other pursuits. My oldest son had 30 kids on his 7th grade team and there are 15 left for his senior season. Is this an indictment of middle school sports? No. It is reality.

5A Owensboro is a contender. Speed, size and 16 or 18 returning starters. New head coach who was an assistant here for 5 years and the kids believe in him. As good or better than last years state runner up team. Fear the Fork!
