Collegiate has three sophomore transfers: 6'4" Ches Moore (transfer from Atherton), 6'2" Nate Saettel (transfer from Trinity), and 6'1" Drew Manning (transfer from Eastern). I think those transfers will make Collegiate something much different than what was expected based on what they had returning. My hope is to get out and see Collegiate the first week of the season. I will provide a report in my weekly update of the Seventh Region rankings.

Jason Frakes's Seventh Region preview, broken down by district, now can be found on the Courier-Journal website (I assume all of it will be in tomorrow's paper edition) and contains some significant information about two players I had listed among the region's top ten players. Jason reports that Milton Wright of Christian Academy has decided not to play basketball this season. While that is understandable in light of Wright's status as a...

There are at least two boys teams with female head coaches right now; Brown School in Louisville is coached by Erin Spalding, who is doing a good job at Brown. Ballard Memorial and Brown played each other last season in what is believed to have been the first game between two varsity boys teams with female coaches (Ballard Memorial won 68-56).

Actually, West Louisville High School was about 100 miles west of Louisville. West Louisville is a small community in Daviess County that had a high school back in the day. These days, West Louisville is in Apollo High School's district. West Louisville was a powerhouse in girl's basketball in the 1920's, winning the state tournament in 1923 and 1927.

University High School was a private school, run by Professor Tharp, and often was called Tharp's School. Jefferson County differed from most Kentucky counties in that in did not have a lot of high schools that eventually consolidated. Back in those days, High School (Male) and Manual were the only two public highs for boys in Louisville (there also was Girls High School). All of the other high schools were private. Later, in the 1920's I...

Research in this area (and many other areas) got a lot easier when the Courier-Journal made its digital archives available to the public (for an annual fee).

Brooksville's recent post about the oldest basketball rivalry in Kentucky prompted some discussion about how long Male and Manual have been playing each other in basketball. Having looked at that question recently, I thought I would share what I have found about the early days of high school basketball in Louisville, although I readily admit that there may be gaps in my information. As was the case in most cities, basketball arrived in...

Very good stuff, Runcible Owl. The earliest high school teams in Jefferson County participated in leagues organized by the YMCA and, as reflected in Runcible Owl's post, competed against a variety of other teams. A few years after these first games were played around 1903 and 1904, an "Interscholastic League" was formed and included High School (Male), Manual, University High (also known as Tharp's High), Patterson-Davenport School,...

Male beat Manual 14-13 on January 13, 1905. Manual actually led 10-1 at halftime but Male (then simply known as High School) outscored Manual 13-1 in the second half. There might have been earlier games between the two, but so far that is the earliest game I have seen reported. While the football tradition is better known, I suspect there is no longer running rivalry in Kentucky high school basketball.

You are correct. I repeated a mistake that appears on the KHSAA website. My apologies.

Thanks. And you may be right about all of those teams. I moved most teams around a lot before deciding on the rankings. I look forward to seeing Male play this season; with what they lost, it will be quite impressive if Male ends up being better than St. X, who has almost everyone back. I am impressed with Coach Settembre, the new coach at Collegiate, and they may move up the rankings quickly if the transfers produce as expected. Central...

I think it will be interesting to see what the KHSAA does here. I am not sure the KHSAA knows exactly what to do with places like Aspire Academy, as shown by the De'Von Cooper situation last year. Hope things work out for the young man.

BluegrassPreps.com 7th Region Boys Basketball Preview The Ballard Bruins were the Kings of the Seventh Region last year, finishing 29-7 for the year (16-0 in the Seventh Region) and advancing to the quarterfinals of the state tournament where they fell to Fern Creek 55-52. If recent history repeats itself, Ballard winning the region last year means Trinity will win it this year. And Trinity, with perhaps the three best returning players in...

I moved to Louisville 34 years ago and have made it out to Fairdale for at least part of the KOB most of the years I have lived here. A tremendous event. Please keep them coming, Coach.
