Dallaslaredo, I hate that you perceived it that way. But in no way was Coach Wiefering taking shots at Notre Dame in my opinion. I asked him about the players developing mental toughness because he brought it up after the 9th Region loss to Notre Dame last year. Smack talk between players and from the stands happens more than people realize. But you have to deal with it as a player.

Yes, you did, Jack of All Trades. It just did not hit me until now. Thus, the trend that Patrick Towles started in 2011 continues as another senior enters the season as the starting quarterback.

Carl Schoellman is the starting QB and Grady Cramer is the back-up. Cramer will play wide receiver. I heard it straight from Coach Deaton. NKY Tribune reported it.

The main goal this year is a top-five finish in the 8th Region Tournament. With a nice mix of talented upperclassmen and young golfers, second-year Highlands Ladybirds head golf coach Cheryl Spahr said it could happen if her top four scorers can consistently shoot below 100 in the 18-hole tournaments. Highlands graduated three seniors from last year in Sarah Steffen, Savannah Phillips and Alexander Padget. Highlands finished ninth in the...

In recent years, it seems like the Highlands Bluebirds soccer team puts together great seasons when they have a roster filled with seniors numbering into the double digits. The Bluebirds had 11 seniors on the roster last year and 10 in 2013. Highlands won the 9th Region before falling 3-1 to eventual state champion Lexington Dunbar in the state quarterfinals in 2013. The Bluebirds posted an 18-3-2 record last year. They captured the 36th...

The lone team left standing on top of the girls soccer scene in the Commonwealth of Kentucky is like many champions. That team puts together a solid run at the right time and weathers storms on its way to the top of the mountain. That team last year turned out to be the 12th Region champion West Jessamine Lady Colts. West Jessamine (24-4 overall) strung together 19 straight wins on its way to its first-ever state championship in girls soccer...

The Highlands Ladybirds cross country team put together a solid run of a school-record four consecutive Class 2A state championships. But after coming close once during that time, the Christian Academy of Louisville Lady Centurions ended the streak placing three in the top 10 on their way to 64 points for the state championship. Highlands finished runner-up with 93 points. The good news for the Ladybirds is the Centurions graduated two...

They've been at .500 at 53-53 overall since Katelyn Sallee became the head coach in 2014. A huge goal Sallee set at the beginning of her tenure was a winning season. After consecutive 17-18 campaigns, the Highlands Ladybirds volleyball team broke through last year with that feat at 19-17 overall. That marked the program's first winning season since 2010. The next goal is a district championship. That has been difficult over the last 12...

Bert Richey took over as head coach before last season and has begun implementing solid foundations for success for the Highlands Bluebirds golf team. It paid immediate dividends as Highlands performed well in match play going 10-1-1 on the season. The Bluebirds also finished runner-up in a few tournaments and in the top three in a few more. Unfortunately, the youth and inexperience caught up to the Bluebirds in the 8th Region Tournament...

I won't go into a lot of details. But I will say I think supporters will like what they read about the defense Friday.

Editor's Note: This is a two-part series. A preview of the 2017 Highlands defense will run Friday. The Highlands Bluebirds football team came back home up Interstate 71 from Louisville on Nov. 4 last season facing cold, hard reality. The season that the returning players hope to make people forget about quickly came to an end that night. The Bluebirds ventured to the Commonwealth of Kentucky's largest city and lost 52-32 to the Doss...
