The KHSAA website says that in 2004 Highlands had to forfeit both regular season and playoff wins over Coach Ray's last CovCath team...and their first four playoff games altogether. However Highlands' 22-6 win over Boyle County in the championship still shows. I don't remember that story.

Well, I said I was pretty sure. In this case, "pretty" wasn't good enough. Thanks for the correction GC and Hatz.

I'm pretty sure the Dickenson System was replaced as the determining factor for playoff teams when the number of classes was increased from 3 to 4...in the 1975 season. Only the district champion...by district record (& tie-breakers) was used. It was my second season as play-by-play man. I remember hearing my predecessor talk about the "system," but never had to learn its incredibly complicated ramifications.

Would be interesting to know how many schools...when they listed their enrollment...were talking about the entire school or just the high school. I don't remember reading much about athletic events that made a big deal about using comparative school sizes for athletic events...and certainly not using enrollment numbers. Also, way back when (thinking late 20's & early 30's here,) not everybody finished school. That was the depression era,...

BigV, We broadcast the 1976 state tourney, and all the paperwork we had called it McCreary County. I'm guessing the list you saw was "typed" at a later time, and the typist didn't know the difference between the two names.

I don't know GC. Compare: In the fall of 1962, Hanson (a tiny school) became part of Madisonville High School...and the name was changed to Madisonville-North Hopkins. The name change coincided with the formation that year of West Hopkins...a consolidation of Nebo, Charleston and Dalton. Folks in the rest of county (which had already seen Mortons Gap and Nortonville become South Hopkins) didn't want Madisonville to be the only school in...

Haven't been able to find the enrollment of Corinth (in Grant County) though there is an article from the Courier-Journal...written in 1962...that includes mention of the team's successes. I wasn't able to access that story. 1930 was the last year for the National H.S. Tournament. It ran from 1917 through 1930 and was orchestrated by Amos Alonzo Stagg of the University of Chicago (which was a member of the Big Ten at that time.)

If you Google "Milan-1954," several stories say "enrollment was 161." Muncie Central, the state runner-up, was 2,200.

I Googled "Carr Creek basketball 1928" and found a ton of stuff. Lots of it has been written based on past accounts...with varying degrees of accuracy. The most fun article was in the Chicago Tribune...where the Creekers were playing in the 32-team National Tournament. Ashland, the state champion that year, also won the National with a 5-0 record; Carr Creek won its first three games, before losing in the quarter-finals. ...

Thanks for posting those Lit-Ratings GC; I always enjoy that kind of stuff. Because of the 1928 team, Carr Creek was a legendary name. But I'm not sure the Creekers were the "favorite" in 1956. True they were (barely) #1 according to Lit, but the favorite tended to be a big school like Lafayette. Or perhaps 4th region champion Central City, which had been there three years in a row with a combined record of 99-10. And then there was King...

A bunch. 52-28 maybe? I heard them say, but it didn't stick.

Cubs broadcasters pointed out Friday that...at this point in the season...the average won-loss record for the last five World Series champions was one game over .500. Which is where Chicago was this year. I thought that was an interesting stat. Jim DeShaies had mentioned earlier that the biggest opponent of this year's Cubs might be "Big Brother"...the 2016 Cubs.

I hate it for Miguel. His comment after the World Series (quote: I was surprised I wasn't used more) wasn't all that bad, though the headlines of the story turned it around a bit. He took the time to study...and became an American citizen last month. He had helped mentor some of the younger players over the last couple of years (per the Cubs TV announcers)...which can be an invaluable aid to new guys. You could frequently see him...
