10 Good
  1. Woodford and Whitesburg people will have many a Burkichism: pork eating frog turds!
  2. Coach Smith has been preparing for a head coaching position since his days at Warren East. He has a plan for how he wants to run a program. He's been through the ringer and worked with some good men. It's good to see him get an opportunity. Good luck, Coach Smith.
  3. For what it's worth, BW was a D-III powerhouse in the late 70's early 80's. (Got a lot of D-I transfers from Ohio kids who weren't going to play where they signed-kind of like Mount Union when they began to win). Jim Tressel's father, Lee was Head Coach and I think Jim started there. It is in a community right outside of Cleveland, so a potential hot bed of recruiting, esp for the D-III level, and with a tradition to revitalize...maybe not such a bad move. A lot of the smaller schools also provide a tuition deal which can mean a lot to a family. The Browns trained there, too. I don't know Coach Hilvert, but when I think of BW, it should be a nice job.
  4. Thomas was indeed special! Nice to see some props for him. Coach Hamilton took football on an interim and if I recall correctly, finish the season basis about 8 or so years ago.
  5. Every sport, shot, every activity has an element of risk. As much as we try as coaches and parents, we can't put them in a bubble. Sports teach lots of skills: competitiveness, toughness, resilience, leadership, teamwork, creativity, obedience, and more. All skills that are essential to success in work and family. They are skills that seem to be in shorter supply in society today. Football is the consummate team game. No one person can do it alone. The best players and teams are those in service to each other. in today's all about me world, sports in general, and football in particular, are important tools. We do and should continue to mitigate risk. We are teaching tackling so much better today. Awareness of concussions is much stronger (who knows how many we had back in the day). We need to continue to educate, esp at the youngest levels, and we must advocate for our game. We are not the NFL. Our kids are not adults. High school collisions are not the same, and neither is the high school brain. We need to remember that in all our endeavors with our kids.
  6. Wow, a program that does not have much success throughout its history, headed by a home grown coach who wanted THAT job, and had some success, lets him go. The next guy will probably be one who has his eye on the job after Casey County, a climber, who is not looking to build a program nor will he have or desire to establish roots in the community. I hope I'm wrong... Good luck to Coach Marple in your next step!
  7. The sham is that there has to be any pretense of a search. If Coach Weinrich has the endorsement of Coach Mueller and wants the job, it should be his with no search needed. Hasn't he been Coach Mueller's right hand man for years? He knows the job, the community, the Highlands system, and the kids. He lacks the proverbial head coaching experience-which can be huge. Where prey tell (sp?) should he get that? Knowing Coach Mueller would be retiring, should Coach Weinrich have left for another school? Why? He's a Highlands guy through and through. If he is passed over because of "lack of head coaching", then is there any reason or incentive to EVER remain/work loyally for a top program with the aspiration to be the head coach?? As a long time assistant coach myself, If Brian Weinrich gets passed over (esp for a fellow alum with head experience, and there are good ones out there), I see no reason for any aspiring head coach to stay anywhere more than a few years! He's earned the job!
  8. Devin Taylor's best game: 24 carries 388 yards (16/carry) 5 TDs versus Woodford County in 2 plus quarters. (I think he only played one series in the 3rd quarter ). Broke 300 in at least 3 other games , too.
  9. Dark horse who deserves consideration and to have his name mentioned in the conversation: Devin Taylor of West Jessamine. Over 2660 (242/game) yards this year and almost 2500 last. Everybody in the tri-state knew he'd get the ball ( no real passing attack to share the load) and he still got the yards. West Jess not a power, either. Great kid and he deserves to be in the conversation! Now he is!
  10. *Stanford. At next level he needs a program that runs downhill with a power scheme that features a TB behind an H or FB. game speed is better than 40. Doesn't get caught from behind this year, and it hardly happened last year.
  11. The kid is a great high school back with a big up side at next level. Just turned 17 three weeks ago. If not mistaken, this is the first game in two years under 100 yards. Scheme is very Stanfird/Wisconsin like. He's dropped his 40 time to a 4.6 range and I heard it was 4.6 flat. He's almost 6' and is close to 220. His dad had an after high school growth spurt and I think Devin will too. Never down on first hit, he has a nice lean and good vision. He knows how to follow and set up blockers. He's also a team first kind of kid. As a former coach of his, I am biased, but I love the kid!
  12. 6'2" 225 big wingspan and can run. Averaged 10 tackles a game in a new scheme. 6 ints one for a td, game winner agst Montgomery. 13 catches 265 yards 3 tds. Can go 240 and will gain speed at UK (expect he may go sub 4.7). Was CJ honorable mention. Hard to get attention at West. No all star teams cause he plays bball too.
  13. Congrats to Robby Irgang, West Jessamine LB. Committed to a PWO offer from UK today. Quality kid with an excellent work ethic and a downhill nose for the football!
