I like an outside run, inside the 5 yard line, on first down. Defenses are trying like crazy to get inside penetration, so a sweep outside could be perfect.

For me, whether an offense is under center or in the shotgun isn’t that big of a deal. It depends on what you do out of it. I didn’t see the game so I’m not sure what plays were called, but in the run game zone read is highly effective out of the gun. Defenses are going to key on the RB which should allow the QB to pull the ball and score probably untouched. A team can still run power out of the gun too. Roll outs and naked bootlegs are...

There’s a reason in any sport there are starters and backups. The starter can typically make a few more plays than the backup. In a 3 point game with a team having their backup QB in, I wouldn’t say it’s a “cop out” to say the starting QB could have made a few plays to make up for the 3 point deficit. There’s a difference between being prepared and getting your first start on the road in week 1. I also wouldn’t say a team was outplayed if...

Can a team get outplayed and win?

Good to know. A lot of teams are going to be outplayed then.

When you say “outplayed”, what do you mean? Because when I beat outplayed I think of a team getting beat pretty easily.

They lost because of mistakes that aren’t typically accounted for when preparing for a game. That’s just the way football and sports work. If the starter is playing do they make a few plays to win the game, maybe, but that’s why he’s the starter. School size and classification have no bearing when it comes to turnovers. They happen to everyone no matter how big or small.

What were the stats of the X QB?

I’m saying the back up QB threw for about 250 yards and hadn’t played football in about a year, sounds like he did a good job. If the starter in do the same turnovers happen, who knows. But to suggest Trinity is the only team that “builds depth” is a weak claim. If X’s won the game would it have been because of the depth at the QB position or would it have been because they were able to control the football and not turn the ball over? If...

So one game and all of a sudden St. X can’t develop depth? Didn’t run the ball successfully and had four turnovers, not sure exactly how that connects to not have depth. Can’t speak for Manual or others, but I would say the depth issue for St. X is a bit of a stretch.

One would think, but there’s a reason why players start and players are backups. QB played fine, just some costly turnovers and inability to run the football. It’s the first game things will work themselves out especially with a bye week.

Sure, teams are excited but no trophies are being handed out in August. It’s foolish to think St. X isn’t a contender because of one game. We tend to forget before T was a “national power” they had a season where they started 0-4. We also forget there was a year St. X lost their first game of the season to Cov Cath. Things happen, but at the end of the day it’s Trinity, St. X, and Male...then everyone else.

Turnovers and missed red zone opportunities on the road is a recipe for an upset. No one is handing championship trophies on August 17th. Good luck to both teams throughout the season.

Tough way to start the Wallace era, but with all things considered there’s no need to panic. I would imagine with a week off before they host BG, there will be noticeable improvement.

Who are some key players for DeSales that can help them pull the upset? Who are some players for St. X that are maybe under the radar but will be big time factors in deciding the game?

I think it will take a little bit for some roles to be defined for both players and coaches to start the new year; I still think BG wins. I think it’ll be a close game though. BG - 26 CH - 17

I think I accidentally picked Manual, but I meant to choose Central. This game is usually competitive and a great way to open up the season. Central - 20 Manual -14

Depth has to be a huge concern for DeSales. It’s very difficult for opposing teams when St. X has the ability to rotate players that physically look similar with little drop off athletically. Since many fans like to compare scores, is there a score that would make a fan feel really good about the upcoming season or in the opposite direction a score that might concern a fan?

I could see this being a low scoring game. But at the end of the day it’s like picking against Alabama, it’s not a smart move. Trinity - 19 Carmel - 14

Glad this series is back, but I just don’t think DeSales will have enough to hold off the Tigers. Anyone know how the logistics of this game is being handled? Parking will be very difficult. How will DeSales handle seating?

Sounds like X had some flashes offensively, but turnovers got in their way on a few possessions. I’m sure they’re not where they want to be offensively, but one would think they liked what they saw against a different team. Looking forward to seeing how this team improves over the season!

Didn’t see this score coming. Just scrimmage, don’t want to get too excited or too down for either team.

Let me see if I follow here...you make grand comments about the gap closing which I’m assuming not really ever seeing this X team play, then you write off the same X team while you were taking in the the Trinity/Ryle scrimmage. Have you actually seen this current team play? I’m not suggesting they’re going to win a state championship on August 10th but I wouldn’t read too much into a scrimmage in early August...but what do I know.

I think you'll see that. The passing game isn't going to be everyone go long and lets hope we come down with it...but much more of stretching the offense horizontal and hitting guys over the middle. Then when the time comes, taking shots down the field. But the Tigers have to be able to pass with more consistency than they have the last few years, and be able to be comfortable doing it. That's what I think Coach Wallace's style will bring; he's...

The good thing is X will be able to still be productive offensively because the running game will always be there. Friday will be a great indicator of where the offense truly is because it’s someone else lined up across from them.
