  1. Queen in Montreal (with the bonus footage of Live Aid) is spectacular. Hard to argue against The Last Waltz, though.
  2. May have more to do with your ISP and/or computer specs (RAM, processor speed, video card maybe...i'm definitely not a "computer" guy) than the browser. I tried it with Chrome, IE, and Firefox and had the same issues with all three. What's frustrating for me is since I've seen the games myself, all I really want to do is show people (my Dad, primarily) a few plays from each game. Trying to find those plays is a real pain in the neck.
  3. A school website is probably run/updated by somebody who has absolutely no interest in sports. I'd be more upset if a SPORTSwriter made a mistake like that! (Like the guy from the kypost did...calling "Owensboro Catholic" Owensboro...)
  4. This is good stuff. Maybe we can find out! Here's a quote from the link that's in the following post. "The win gave the Thoroughbreds their fifth state championship and third at the 2A level, and it was NewCath’s second title in three years under Eviston. NewCath blanked Owensboro, 42-0 in 2010." Read more: Lyon TD catch lifts NewCath to state title You don't read the KyPost, do you? Their prone to making the same kind of mistakes.
  5. Thanks, Clyde. I've only recently joined BGP, but love the site and the discussions. I hope to be able to post more, if my pesky job and family would only stay out of my way! I appreciate it, but it won't be that easy. If this plan is adopted by the KHSAA (I've submitted it to them, but haven't heard anything back yet), there will be a VERY difficult pre-application test that the Math Consultant must be "proficient" at before even being considered for an interview. I think if you and I put our heads together we could probably come up with a plan that's almost as good as my original plan. I think you're on to something here. Even though I'm anti-enrollment, I could go along with assigning a number (say, 1.5, or 1.8) to each male student at the school that plays football, and somehow using that number to adjust the final classification. I'll think about it for a while and see if I can come up with something. (Right now, I'm thinking about 1.8 for football-playing males, -0.6 for non-football-playing males, and 0 for females, adding it all up, taking the average, and using that number, which I'm going to call the "school constant", to add or subtract from their talent-ranking at whichever position those non-football-playing students decide...pending approval from the 7th person on the Talent Evaluation Committee, whose only job will be to scoff at those who think school should be about more than just football.)
  6. The solution is so obvious that I can't believe the KHSAA hasn't seen it yet. Teams should be classified every season, not every four years. Too much can happen in four years. Just look at Walton-Verona. (I have no idea what's happened at Walton-Verona the past four years, but I love that name, and just thought that you all should look at it.) Classification should NOT be based on "enrollment" (a made-up word that the government uses to further divide us, giving them all nice cushy salaries and retirements from the tax dollars it affords), but instead should be based on talent. Every year, the KHSAA Talent Evaluator (a position I just created) will go to all the schools and assess talent. (On second thought, one person probably couldn't do it alone. We'll need a committee. Say four, or maybe six. No, definitely six.) To avoid bias, the KHSAA Talent Evaluation Committee will have a set of standards based on real-life players. Example: QBs will be compared to Johnny Football. He's a 10. If a school's QB is as good as Johnny Football, they get a "10" in that category. If he (or she) is half as good as Johnny Football, the school will get a "5". This ain't Rocket Science, folks. After the Talent Evaluation window closes, the Committee will sit at a round table (so that no one Talent Evaluator feels superior) and pass their scores to the person to their left. This is where it gets a little tricky, and I implore you guys (and gals) to offer suggestions that I'll ignore. After the scores have been passed to the person to the left, the scores will then be exchanged around the table as if it is a six-sided star. (Six-sided star example) At that point, each Talent Evaluator will look at the scores that they now have, and either add 1 or subtract 1 to each category, depending on what happens at Walton-Verona, and pass the scores back to the Talent Evaluator from whence they originated. THEN, that Talent Evaluator will ALSO add 1 or subtract 1 to each category, taking them back to what they were originally (checks and balances...avoid bias). That's the hard part. From here on out, it's simple. Average the scores for each school, adjust it to a six-point scale, round ALL decimals UP (a 4.1 becomes a 5, a 5.1 becomes a 6, a 0.6 becomes a 1, you get the picture), and bam, there's your six classes. (All schools that got a "1" are "1A", schools that a "2" are "2A", and so on.) (The KHSAA will hire a Math Consultant to help with the shift from a ten-point scale to a six-point scale.) In the unlikely event of class imbalance (unlikely because of the built-in checks and balances, and no bias), the Talent Evaluation Committee will shift schools either UP one class or DOWN one class (depending on what happens at Walton-Verona) to get an equal number of schools in each class. The only problem I can see with my solution is the potential travel-related expenses schools will face each year that can't be budgeted until the Talent Evaluation Committee has done their job and released their results on a blog or a facebook page. Not knowing who your district opponents are going to be until two weeks before the first game is, I admit, a glaring weakness in this system. But it's a weakness that pales in comparison to the weaknesses of the current system. Schools will find a way to deal with it. That's their problem, not mine or the KHSAA's. All the Way to State!
  7. Very funny...or odd, rather...thing happening in this thread. I don't think enough credit is being given to EITHER team. Fairview was absolutely where they belonged. They were big, and tough, and well-coached. And deceptively fast. No doubt they deserved to be playing for a state title. But on that day, Mayfield was bigger, and tougher, and just as well-coached. Nothing deceptive about their speed, though. (I'm reminded, too, of the Robert Downey Jr. quote from Avengers: "We have a hulk." Mayfield fans can look at all of the well-deserved pre-game accolades from Fairview and respond with "We have a Jonathan Jackson.") I'll be called silly (not for the first time) for saying this, but I don't think any team that played yesterday could have beat Mayfield. Highlands would have given them a great game, but Jackson was not going to let his team lose. To anybody. I'll concede that there might be a better football player in the state than Jackson (emphasis on the "might"), but I won't back down from my claim that that a single player has as much affect on a game's outcome than that young man. As soon as he walks on the field, the other team is at a disadvantage. Even if he doesn't make a play. His presence alone (I call it a "swagger", but it's not cockiness...just self-awareness that he's a man amongst boys) changes the game. Put him on any college football team in America...ANY team...and that team is better than they were before. I don't care how tall he is or how fast he is or about any other skill that can be measured. He's got "IT", and it's a shame that supposed recruiters at the "big" schools don't see it. My five-year old daughter could see it, and she doesn't even have a college degree (though she has received "star student" stickers several times this year as a true-kindergartener...my wife and I, along with her teachers, discussed the possibility of a redshirt, but immediate learning-time was too much to pass up.) I'd hate to see her move out at such a young age, but she would be a real asset to Kentucky's football staff. And before you label me a homer...I'm not from Mayfield, and have seen my team suffer many heart-breaking losses to them. I liked it when we beat them. A lot. But I also have an appreciation of greatness. Secretariat, the '96 Wildcats, the 2012 Wildcats, my daughter, the Beatles, legendary PA announcers such as Bob Sheppard and Sherm Feller...the list goes on. Add the 2012 Mayfield Cardinals and Jonathan Jackson to that list. I did all this "gushing" just to say this...Fairview was a great football team, and should not be judged by this one game. I said it in the prediction thread: A LOT of great football teams have lost to Mayfield. Fairview should be given the credit they so rightfully deserve and earned.
  8. Jackson is fun to watch. His last TD probably won't make many highlight reels but it should. Most mortals would have been knocked out of bounds at the5 yard line, but not Jackson. Stiff arms his way into the endzone.
  9. During this year's National Guard Warrior Bowl in Marion, KY, there were a lot of great players on the field for Caldwell County. I was the PA announcer, and all of us in the booth had the honor of selecting the game's MVP. It was close, and we had to discuss it a bit (normally these things are pretty close to unanimous). After some lobbying from me and my spotter, it was finally agreed that the best player on the field THAT night was Mr. Cole Webster. I have no idea what kind of team NCC has, but I can promise you that any comments about Caldwell's lack of defense will not be taken kindly by #54. Also, Boyd is fast. Like, real fast. This will be a close, high-scoring game, but I'm not about to make a prediction. If I did, it would be wrong (most of my predictions end up being wrong). But I AM right about this: Webster is going to tackle a lot of people Saturday, and Boyd is going to run fast. You heard it here first. (Also, don't read too much into the CC-Mayfield game. Mayfield is a pretty good football team. They've got a bit of history, and, contrary to popular belief, great fans who follow them closely and occasionally post about them on various message boards. Caldwell Co. isn't the only good team that Mayfield beat. They've been known, from time to time, to beat good football teams.) Good luck to both teams, and this is another game that I can't wait to see this weekend!
  10. I have a reputation for being not only wrong, but WAY wrong, with my score predictions, but who cares! Wanna say Mayfield wins big, but Fairview took down an inspired Pikeville squad and shocked most of the state (at least those who don't know much about Fairview) with the big win over Hazard. Overlooked is the VERY impressive win over Raceland. Can't wait to watch this game. I think it'll be closer than a lot of folks think, but in the end, Johnathan Jackson will refuse to walk off the field as a high school football player for the last time with an "L". Here comes my sure-to-be-wrong score prediction: Mayfield 30 Fairview 24
  11. As the ol' cliche goes, this game will be decided up front. If CC's off. line is up to the task, their playmakers could put a lot of points on the board. If Murray's DL plays like they did last week, they won't score very much. Either way, Murray's going to score around 35. I'm gonna guess that Murray's defense comes ready to play. Murray 35 CCHS 8
  12. Tonight was one of those "ouch" moments. Murray brought it...and brought it hard. This is a GOOD Crittenden County team, but Murray didn't care. Looking forward to see how their game against Caldwell turns out next week. Winner of that game, IMO, will make it to semi-state. (Yes, I'm overlooking a lot of teams, probably unfairly. But wow...I just sat in the warmth of a press box while it was cold and pouring down rain outside and watched this Murray team pretty much do whatever they wanted to do. I think I'm allowed a few unfair overlooks...)
  13. 7 - Crittenden County 5 - Paducah Tilghman 3 - Warren East 2 - Warren Central 1 - Butler County TB - Paducah Tilghman
  14. 7 Warren East 5 Hopkins County Central 3 Owensboro 2 Adair County 1 Henderson County TB Warren East
  15. 7 Ohio County 5 Calloway County 3 Glasgow 2 Franklin Simpson 1 Adair County TB Calloway County
