I HAVE seen Trevor, and he may be the best player in the region that too few people have seen. He's an incredible athlete, and will be a definite contender for 8th Region Player of the Year before he graduates. I greatly admire this young man's talents. CM

Like you, I prefer a player who is a force at "both ends." Take a quick minute to re-read the post....the top five were not the first "list" created. I created a (larger) list of players - that included my eventual top 5 - who I thought were indispensable to their teams (not necessarily the highest scorers), based upon totally subjective analysis. Then I chose my top five and added the stats. It was interesting to see that the stats very...

Region 8 Monday, 2/11 Trimble County versus Gallatin County - on paper, an easy Gallatin win. But Trimble has won 6 of their last 8 to improve to 12-12. This is an opportunity for the Raiders to prove that they can compete with the contenders in their last home game of the season. Tuesday, 2/12 Walton-Verona at South Oldham - South has had Walton's number the last couple of years due to their style of play. Perhaps THE game of the...

I stand corrected. I write up a pretty large write up on tablet, which enables me to do some comparison more easily...I inadvertently looked at another line and goofed up. Thanks for the correction. I think it very well could be an interesting matchup in the district semis, but Grant will have to score a bucket-load of points - which they are very capable of doing.

I'm sure they were. The roster they gave us was incomplete and didn't always match the players. Hard game to call when you don't know who's who. And - generally everyone's missing their footballers that early in the season.

8th Region Week 11 Review – Chaos to the End As the result of a crazy week that actually seemed to clear a few things up (a little), the rankings are going to see their biggest upheaval of the season this week. #1 remains #1, but a whopping 12 of 17 teams moved at least one spot this week, with Simon Kenton and Carroll County each making the biggest moves as each tumbled three spots. The rankings could yet turn out to be as bogus as a...

Obviously, Frankfort has improved dramatically - what every coach hopes will occur. Because Frankfort lost to unranked North Oldham (13-15) in December and unranked Franklin County (13-13) in late January, I think. Gotta love a stretch running horse making that late surge.... :-) Congrats to Frankfort! CM

I have been hearing rumors that North Bullitt was one of the most dramatically improved teams in the Louisville area. Nobody was ready to hand them the 6th region crown, but heard a lot about NB being very dangerous - especially with a deceiving record. South continues to excel at scoring (#1 in the state), but the defense has let them down two games in a row now.... CM

Gallatin is a team that rarely loses, it seems, in the first round of the region. If I'm headed to New Castle, they're probably the one team I just don't want to see in round one. Not that they're much easier to beat in any round..... :-) CM

Is there a story in Independence? Somebody injured? That's three losses in a row for SK. (Granted, all against top tier competition - Gallatin, Oldham, and Campbell, but....) Just curious, because I still think this is one of Trent Steiner's best teams in a few years.... CM

Shelby is more talented than most are giving them credit for. They just haven't been able to get any kind of chemistry until lately. Gave Woodford a real run for their money. Throw in the fact that Shelby and Collins are rivals, and who knows what happens in the district 30 tournament round 1! CM

Actually, this isn't Oldham's first season in 6A. From 2011-2014, Oldham County competed in 6A. And - as far as competing in the largest class - Oldham competed in Class 4A when there were only 4 classes for several years. CM

Big loss to CAL specifically, and KY Football in general. I loved watching Lefors when he was a U of L QB, and it was an honor to get to deal with him as the coach at CAL. He even - at the request of my son, a huge U of L fan and an FCA officer when he was at East Oldham MS - came to my son's MS FCA program and spoke. Class act. All of KY will miss him. CM

I do think there are too many classes, but not overly so. If we dropped to five classes, for example, the champ would be able to say they beat about 80 teams - much more impressive than being the champs of a 40 team class. But the disparity in school population within that class would be huge. As has already been pointed out, it doesn't take a lot of kids to win at basketball, cross country, tennis, golf, etc. But football simply...

They appear to be peaking at the right time. The teams are making ranking extremely speculative as a result of the crazy head-to-head battles. For example, Collins beat Spencer who beat South who beat Collins. Comparison rankings have to be based on much more than those outcomes as a result. And the head-to-head contests are so close as to make one wonder if the two teams played a 3-game or 5-game series, which team would win? The...

8th Region Week 10 Review: Oh My Gosh Have you ever heard of “diagnosis by exception”? This term is used to describe situations where doctors have to diagnose an illness or condition by methodically eliminating numerous other diagnoses, each more likely than the actual diagnosis. Eventually, after multiple labs, imaging, and tests, the doctors eliminate all the likely diagnoses and land upon the correct diagnosis. This year, that...

Great, tournament-caliber game. Both teams shot well, and the hustle on the court borderlined on frantic-lose-and-go-home atmosphere. Defenses suffered badly as both teams ran up the scoreboard. Gallatin's 79 points was 11 above their normal average of 68.1 ppg. South was actually five points below their average of 80 ppg, but the Dragons' shooting was spectacular. Gallatin led by 7 heading into the final period, and their...

Typo. Read and re-read this thing two or three times before posting, but missed a glaring error in the Shelby County write-up, where I wrote that Collins was ranked #2 in the district. despite being ranked in the top 10 in the Bluegrasspreps state ranking. I meant, of course, to say that Collins was ranked #2 in the REGION (not the district). CM

Sorry, Cardsrule, if you'll notice I only made that mistake once. It happens because I've already done Walton-Verona and when I type in "Bear-" the auto-finish feature completes the word and makes it "Bearcats". Usually, I catch it and correct it, but missed that one. (hey, I caught it 5 out of 6 times this time....that's 83%, a solid "B"! LOL) LOL, I have been around plenty long enough to know that the Spencer team is called the Bears....

8th Region Week 9 Review – A New Number One There was a bit of upheaval in the 8th region this past week, as game results generated some movement in the rankings. Seven teams moved from their spots in last week’s rankings. A quick scan of the 8th region this week: 1 – Simon Kenton (16-4, 6-0 vs 8th region foes, won five straight) Last week: #2 – The new number one in the rankings is the hottest team in the region, riding a five-game...

An expected outcome, but impressive nonetheless due to the margin of victory. Spencer continues to lay claim as one of the two favorites to come out of the 30th district - and remember, since the districts were "re-districted" in 2006, all the champions have come from either the 29th or 30th districts. Spencer is sitting in that "second wave" of contenders that just need a little luck and hard work and they could just pull it off. Plenty...
