  1. How about taking the Louisville Courier Journal's final Litkenhouse ratings and seeing who has the highest power rating. They use to be based on all classes. I know in 1968 and 1970 Highlands had the highest overall rating at the end of the season. Since it is a Louisville paper I doubt the large class schools from Louisville would argue with that?
  2. Well, if you assume that the large school class/classes would be the only classes that could beat Highlands, then 1960 Highlands beat a very good Louisville Male team who then went on to win the large school class ( AAA ) that year. As Oldbird has already mentioned the 1982 Highlands state champs beat eventual large school champs Christian County. and the 1998 Highlands state champs beat Louisville Male (AAAA) the eventual large school class state champ. Those 3 years are hard to argue that Highlands would not have won the entire state. I agree with dennis 12b NCC had some very good teams in the 60's. I believe they tied for the GCL championship in 1969 season with Cincinnati Moeller. and their 1965 team was very good
  3. He will be deeply missed. Friday nights will not be the same at Highlands. He has been announcing for 53 years and has had a wonderful career as a college professor at the University of Cincinnati. I believe he recently was awarded the NKADA Distinguished Service Award for his service as an announcer and scorekeeper. Thanks for all your years of service. I hope they were as rewarding to you as it was to those who had the pleasure of listening to you on Friday nights.

  8. WS - No need to be smoking anything, merely a discussion about quarterbacks. I am not comparing quarterbacks, merely replying to the comment you made about the athletic/toughness comment about Will Bardo. Will Bardo has to be included in any discussion concerning Highlands great quarterbacks IMO. My thoughts can't help but drift back to the Cincinnati St. Xavier game (2009) in which Will and the Highlands coaching staff dismantled a Specht led defense who admittedly at the time was touted as one of the best defenses in the state of Ohio if not the country. As I recall up until the time Will got injured ( requiring Tommy John surgery ) he accounted for most of the Highlands offense either through the air or with his feet, scoring the only touchdown for Highlands. Anyway, relax I am on the same team on this one, both great quarterbacks.
  9. Overall athleticism and toughness please... the kid came back after injuring his elbow and returned as a RB. The last thing I would do is take a shot at McCoy who is a very good high school QB. But please don't tell me Bardo is not tough enough after returning from the injury he had and going on to play at the next level. He may not have played the entire year at QB his senoir year but he won one of the, if not the biggest game I ever witnessed at Highlands. He also went undefeated his high school career at QB.
  10. I Think Cooper is going to run the table and bring home their first state championship. That will make 2 for NKY
  11. Have not seen Ryle's defense this year, but we would be hearing a whole lot about Ryle's defense if they were the caliber of Cocoa. I am doubtful they are as good as Cocoa, but I hope I am wrong. Go Raiders.
  12. I like it. Thanks ( you could have picked a profession other than Lawyers, I don't see them getting along even when they are on the same side of the fence. )
  13. The Triple Option was first used at the Collegiate level by Darryl Royal at Texas. He called it " Homer's Triple " in tribute to Homer Rice who developed the play at Highlands in 1960. Keep in mind the Triple is a play and not a formation. The wishbone formation was developed by Texas to run the Triple. I believe the first use of the play was at Highlands under Homer Rice in the 1960 game VS. Louisville Male. The reason it was used was because Male had an all state tackle and an all state end who the Highlands coaches believed could not be blocked. Homer overcame that fact by simply not blocking them and optioning ( with a very good quarterback Roger Walz ) The defensive tackle and defensive end. The other 2 players involved in the triple option were the Burt brothers John and Jim. John was the fullback and took the first option, Walz would then option the end by either keeping the ball or option 3 pitching the ball to Jim Burt around the end. Now I was quite young then but I dont believe Male stopped this play all night. Highlands went on to win 26-20. The play was not run out of the wishbone formation but was run out of the short tee which is similar to the wishbone except the third running back is lined up between the offensive guard and tackle very close to the line of scrimmage, almost another lineman and he is used exclusively for blocking.
