  1. I played against him once. He was a couple years out of college. A bunch of UK grads traveled around playing smaller college teams in our preseason. Both Charles Hurt and Derrick Hord could still play. They were physical specimens. Hurt was really an impressive athlete. Really quick of the floor and once he touched the ball you were not getting it. He really played the game hard. You did not want him to set a pick on you. I used to have a picture with him after the game. Seemed like a heck of a nice guy.
  2. Sir You were an average jv player as a junior in high school. Most jv games don't have teams scoring 60 points. Hence you may not have been blown out by 60.
  3. I played against Mitch, Dave and Kenny. Newport was very good in those days and they were a big reason why. Congratulations!
  4. Where's the fiction? Bill Petty was the head coach before John Messmer? You may need to check in with Hambone on that one. I was pretty sure you would disagree. Not quite sure what your smoking as I had 80 Fischer, just a different format than what your looking for I guess. I think we do get a lot of out of district kids. Not sure they play basketball. I would say Shield's had relationships with Fred's Dad, Maile's Dad and Scott Draud's Dad long before those guys ever came to HHS. Add Bill Blasingame, he loved Kenney. So I got Sully wrong? I thought he lived somewhere else. Next time can I send it to you to proof? You seem to have plenty of time to post things on here. Why don't you volunteer some to the program if you think it needs help, I'm sure Coach would welcome your help.
  5. As an HHS Basketball guy let me give this my best shot. I get a kick out of a couple HHS fans who seem to have all the answers and are really quick to tell you so. They may not know/remember some of this. IMO there were a couple of things that helped Coach Shields out in the late 70's. First, St Thomas closing. A lot of kids wound up down the street at HHS. Some of these guys would have played at St Thomas had it still been open. Second, Shields was good at talking. He seemed to benefit from several tuition/out of district guys: 79 Sullivan 80 Fischer 82 Terry 83 Kremer 84 Maile 84 Lankheit 85 Beagle 86 Draud 88 Blasingame and probably a couple more I can't remember. And third other than 76-80 Holmes was kind of down in the 80's and CovCath did not win any regions it seemed during that time. But I don't remember Coach Shields ever attending one of my 7th grade games. I don't remember him organizing JR pro teams. I do remember that we were on our own in the summer, he did not have open gyms at HHS(that gym stayed locked up). I remember him walking around the gym during practice trying to lose weight. I remember him bringing his boy to practice. I remember HHS students supporting us during his time and trips to Rupp. I also rememberHHS students showing up to games with paper bags over their heads because we were losing, that hurt. They didn't wear those bags later that year when we played in Rupp, that was nice. I remember some of our parents yelling at Coach Shields out at Walton and a resulting prayer meeting in a stairwell with everyone after the following practice. He was a good Coach and I told him I loved him after my last game. He talked me out of playing football. HHS won 2 State Championships while I was there. I was a basketball guy. I don't remember the Petty years very well. I think he had some competitive teams. I do remember the Messmer years. I think there were some forces out to get him when Smith/Lorenzen arrived on the scene. (By the way they were not necessarily home grown Ft Thomas guys) After they got there Mess was a great Coach. 3 straight trips to Rupp. But it's the Guidugli/Neltner team that got to Rupp that Mess should get credit for. I think it is the only one with all homegrown Ft Thomas guys to get to Rupp. Squatty's all had some extra outside help. I don't remember Mess going to MS games although he may have. I don't remember Mess organizing AAU in the summer. He had a hell of a Mulch Sale. 2 Qoutes come to mind for Willie's time "There's no place like home" and "You can't go back". Either they love him or they hate him. I would say that Maichicrunch and Gryche are in the later category. Coach Flynn is a good man and a good Coach. He is a tireless worker and my dad really likes him. It would be ok with me if he coached my son. I wish him well, but Ft Thomas is a demending place to Coach. I hope he stays that long.
  6. Both teams played their hearts out. Shame that someone has to lose. Both teams will benefit tremendously from the experience.
  7. I would take the Mustangs in this one, but I think it will be close 62-58. I would be interested in Coach Code's record vs Coach Russell. I know they have coached against each other every year for the last 6 years. Always a great early season game. I agree with Mustang - it will lose some appeal moving it to January. I would really love to see this one played on the Mustang home floor. It's been either the MS or HS for essentially a home game for the Camels since I can remember. I would be interested in the record in the MS games and the record in the games played at the HS. Financially it only makes sense to play at CCHS but what an advantage.
  8. I saw him play as a kid and later played against him at the armory. I'm not sure he is one of the 10 best in N KY history. I'm not sure he is one of the first 5 all armory selections. Top 5 Ft Thomas Armory is probably another thread but what the heck. 1. Bob Arnzen 2. Matt Geisler 3. Joe Reis 4. Tony Arnzen 5. Dave Guidugli
  9. 1 Beal 1A Schloemer The rest is debatable. Troy McKinley's state games were incredible. Who's going to guard Jack Jennings? Draud could really shoot. But Beal and Schloemer have to be at the top of the list. I'm not sure Ricardo could dominate a game like these 5. Smith without Lorenzen isn't quite the same, but they were an incredible tandem. Doelman above Neltner on my list but its a gap back to them. Dinn was a fine player and a great guy. I can't say too much prior to 78 - just a puppy back then.
  10. I think he has coached for 20+ years. He has won a region title. And he has two All A State titles. He has done it with both boys and girls. Maybe I should have said he is probably one of the best coaches in the state regardless of boys or girls teams. Does that sound better?
  11. I'm not real sure about all these summer games at all these camps and stuff. Seems to me that you are paying a lot of money to go and get the snot fouled out of you. From a defensive aspect usually the guys are not in the same shape as during the season and this leads to a ton of reaching and fouling. This generally leads to the offense looking much different than it truely would in season. Creates some bad habits that must be broken later. Never really put a lot of stock into summer wins and losses. it can point out some competitive things about the players and help a group bond, but you can do that in your own gym. i always liked playing against older competition - grads in college and out of school trying to stay in shape. Those guys are crafty and usually willing to give lessons to the youngsters.
  12. Did they ever hire an AD? I saw in the paper today that Mr Strong signed thru 2013 I think?
