Reds @ Braves series (4/30 - 5/3/15)

Page 7 of The Braves have been hitting ok, but their pitching has been terrible. Their pitching was supposed to be what kept them in games. Advertisement Apr 30,... 107 comments | 2455 Views | Go to page 1 →

For those defending the handling of the Mesoraco situation by saying that he was being used as the "pinch hitter with pop" I would ask you this: In this age of bullpen specialization how many teams use one of their few bench slots up on a player that plays no position and is used as a pinch hitter twice a week?

This isn't Dominguez sitting on the bench. Mesoraco hit 25 homers last season. If you want to carry him as a pinch hitter that's fine. But he should be the number one RH option on that godawful bench that the Reds have.

The handling of this situation has been ridiculous and should cost the person responsible their job.

Saw a tweet yesterday that Meso has the lowest avg batted ball velocity in the majors at 70 MPH...he's 8 miles away from the next person on the list (Billy Hamilton)! He's clearly not right.

You throw that big general statement out there like it is an obvious, unassailable fact. There are two other teams currently carrying 3 catchers (Cubs, Giants), which is not much different than what the Reds are doing.

My two points on this are:

    1. This is not the most incredible ignorant move of all time by a team, like it seems is being contended on here.

    2. There isn't a player who should be in Mesoraco's roster slot that the Reds would use and more or any differently. That is why I am asking what would Dejesus or Dominguez have done this past month for the Reds?

People have answered that question numerous times. I'm not doing it again.

Very few ABs and only used when runners are base.....that sort of thing. Then with the Reds playing 8 games in AL parks and needing a DH that role will go to Meso and probably would have gone to Chris D at least some of the time. So Reds "in theory" are not playing short-handed by having a player that can only pinch hit.

He's only had 5 AB's since April 21st. If he's going to be used as a pinch hitter, shouldn't they at least USE him?

It greatly cuts down on their flexibility if you carry someone that can't play a position. If they'd have had another infielder or outfielder they might not have had to trot Negron out there 23 times since Mesoraco has been injured and watch him slug his way to a .043 average.

Meanwhile Mesoraco has had 5 plate appearances. If he's being carried to be a pinch hitter than use him as a pinch hitter. It isn't like it costs them anything in regards to late inning moves since he can't play the field. I know that you feel as though this is the best Reds bench in several seasons but with Mesoraco being used as he has you basically have 3 useless spots: Mesoraco since they won't hit him, Negron who can't hit at all, and the backup catcher of the day since generally they can't afford to put him into the game. Mesoraco might be taking the roster spot that Dominquez had but he should not be used like that if he's healthy enough to hit--he should be used almost every day. The Reds have went 8-12 since he left the lineup. Don't you think they could have used his presence as a PH more than 5 times in that stretch?

What are your thoughts on the Cubs and the Giants carrying three catchers?

Side note... Those two teams have great GM's and managers.

They can all play, correct? Apples to oranges, but then you already knew that.

On the other side of this Mesoraco discussion, the Cozart injury sure could put a new wrinkle on it.

And is used more than Mesoraco has been, and he can actually play the field if need be.

He's actually started 5 games this year, but facts are optional apparently.

    Montero - 13 starts
    Castillo - 5 starts
    Ross - 5 starts

Need to fire the ownership first, if you are going to fire anyone.
