Hader: From Slurs To Standing Ovation

Josh Hader is a reliever for the Brewers. During the All-Star game old tweets of his were brought up. These tweets contained slurs against both blacks and gays. After the game he apologized for the tweets saying he was young and stupid.

He came into the game last night and the Milwaukee fans gave him a standing ovation.

I get supporting the local guy but a standing O seems an odd way to do it.

If your mindset is "hey he's our guy and he was just a stupid kid" wouldn't a more appropriate response simply be to not boo?

Very strange. I don’t understand how anyone would think that’s the way to handle it.

Hader will get his fair share of boos on the road.

Fans applauding athletes despite their abhorrent behavior goes back as long as sports have existed. They don’t care.

I would have like to have seen the fans give no reaction upon his intro through the duration of the series.

I love the people who dismiss racism because someone else did something terrible.

A great example of how we humans rationalize. No question.

I didn't take the post that way. In today's climate, though, I can see how one could. I just think Bench is saying "yeah this is really bad but Kobe likely raped a girl and was still beloved." Same with Big Ben. Same with....we're human. We're not always rational.

That’s not even remotely what I was saying and I believe you know that.

This thread could take on a whole new twist depending on who sees this. I'll need to stay tuned.

Not that my opinion matters, but I didn't see it as a dismissal or racist behavior at all.

Saw it more as a question regarding what upsets people and how they choose to react to things, for better or worse.
