Alfonso Soriano doesn't want to play for a chance to play in the playoffs.
Don’t assume the sudden loss of Melky Cabrera to a 50-game suspension for using steroids means Cubs outfielder Alfonso Soriano might be heading to the San Francisco Giants.
Soriano, who has veto rights in any trade, already turned down overtures from the Giants before the July 31 non-waiver deadline. He has cleared waivers now, but he repeated Wednesday his reluctance to go to the West Coast.
‘‘San Francisco is not good weather to play in,’’ he said. ‘‘I’ve never played on the West Coast, but we’ll see what happens. I want to talk to my family and see.’’
Soriano said he hasn’t been approached again by the Cubs about a deal.
‘‘Now there’s six weeks left to the season,’’ he said. ‘‘I’ll try to enjoy it with these young guys and see what happens in the offseason. I’ll just try to do the best I can and not think about trade deadlines.’’
Alfonso Soriano doesn
I really don't understand some players.

Or consistantly make contact, hit a curve ball, or have strike zone discipline.

Living where you want for a job seems fair to me. If he doesn't think he will like SF why go?

I'm confused. He is currently in Chicago. How is the weather in San Fran worse then Chicago?

I don't know Clyde, maybe have a chance to play for a World Series Championship. I never said he didn't have a right as a 10/5 guy to decide where he wants to play. I stated he doesn't want a chance to play in the playoffs.

Isn't your statement a bit presumptuous?
Do you think if the NYY wanted him he would stay in Chicago? Maybe he just doesn't like the West coast.

He was given a chance, and he said "No thanks", so no, not presumptuous at all.

He doesn't want to go to the west coast but that doesn't mean he doesn't want to play for the playoffs.

If he was an accountant, lawyer, or dentist, I'd agree.

Why do we have different rules for athletes?
By that logic any athlete that signs a large FA contract with a bad team doesn't want to play in the playoffs. I don't buy that oversimplification.

Apples and oranges. The Cubs are clearly out of the race. The Giants have a great chance of getting to the playoffs. A free agent signs in the off season well hope springs eternal.

Clearly there's an issue with playing on the west coast. Not sure what that is, but....

Because your window as an athlete is very short. Your window as an accountant is until they can pat the dust of your rear end and your arthritis is so bad you can't hold a pencil. Apples and anvils.

Soriano doesn't want to go anywhere with expectations so that he won't be scrutinized as being monumentally overrated. That's how I see it.

The only way you believe the top is that a player truly believes the bad team that offers the most has a chance to make the playoffs. I don't buy that.
