Graduation losses, injuries, emerging leaders, returning all-stars, regular powerhouses, cross-town rivalries: The 2017 Northern Kentucky high school volleyball scene has it all, and the season is just officially getting started.

Before a set has even been played, local schools already have their eyes on Notre Dame Academy. The Pandas will have a more experienced team compared to last yearís, though that one, which had graduated eight seniors from the 2015 squad, didnít skip much of a beat: Notre Dame, ranked fifth in Kentucky, beat St. Henry in the Ninth Region finals before falling to No. 3 Mercy in the first round of the KHSAA State tournament, ending its season with a 24-12 record.

Opponents of Notre Dame early this fall will be able to take advantage of the absence of senior Lainey Stephenson. Stephenson, a first-team all-conference setter and outside hitter, is recovering from surgery on a torn labrum but is expected to return sometime in September, according to head coach Buck McCoart.
