High School Swimming
Can it grow in this state?
Is there any programs east of Lexington?

I believe Ashland and Rowan County have decent teams.

Nice to see a swimming thread for a change! Here in NKy there is only one high school in the whole region that has its own pool and all of the meets are held there. All of meets are dominated by swimmers from USA Swimming member clubs. Thay don't even practice with their high school teams, but are allowed to swim in the meets! Could you imagine that in any other HS sport!

Gee, I guess Richard Dickmann will be surprised by your comment!

CCH Swimming & Diving
The swimming and diving season begins each year on October 1 and ends with the state swim meet in February. A voluntary conditioning program begins on the first Wednesday in September. Practices are as follows: Water practices are at Silverlake Recreation Center in Erlanger on Mondays and Fridays at 3:00 PM and Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:00 am. Dry land practice is on the school campus on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons at 3:00 PM. Diving practices are usually two days per week at Northern Kentucky University. Swim and Dive meets are typically on Wednesdays or weekends. Those participating in fall sports are welcome to join the team up until the end of the second week after completion of their fall sport. Swimming and Diving provides varsity letters to those who score in the Regional Championship Meet, and JV letters to those who do not. If you have any questions or concerns about the Swimming & Diving program, please contact Coach Dickmann at the link below

The ranks may shrink by one if Nelson County can't track down a coach. It's unlikely new Thomas Nelson will have a team.

That means more room in the pool for the rest of the team! We had our first experience last season with NKY high school swimming. It was great! The kids worked hard, cheered each other on to their individual pr's, and bonded as a team. The shared pool time means that kids are practicing with other high schools, and then competing against them, so they get to know lots of other kids from NKY, too. It's a great winter sport option.

[QUOTE=Toucan Sam;4403096]I would venture a guess that the better Cov. Cath swimmers (like all KY high schools) swim with their club team and not with their high school team.
True statement

When i swam in high school, our club swimmers NEVER came to our practices... i hated it because it took away from the team. these nobodies came in, wearing your team suit and team name, took awards, and you had no idea who they were. but that's how all teams are in nky.

A few years ago I was told that swimmers at NDA were required to swim on a club team and that's where each swimmer practiced.

My kids, swim club for a very small, somewhat obscure, club in OH, but they know virtually every other club (USA Swimming - they may not know some YMCA kids) in NKY. Not to mention they know virtually all of the kids who have swam NKSL growing up. The swimming community is fairly small and pretty tight. Plus club or not they know all of their own teammates.
One of the really neat things things about nky is at the state meet, all the NKY teams Coe together and do Region 4 cheers together.

I might be reading into CGH comments a little bit, but I sence a little bit of resentment and I understand why. The High School swimmers go to practices and swim in the meets with the club swimmers. Then a very few of of the High School Swimmers qualify for Regionals and almost none qualify for state. Yet the High School swimmers are expected to come to regionals and state meets to cheer for these "team mates" that they did not see all year. Furthermore, the club swimmers have usa meets that conflict with the school meets and swim in the high school meets only when it doesn't conflict with their usa meet schedule.
Granted, the High School swimmers don't see the club swimmers at their 5:30 am practices 5 days a week, or the three dry land workouts they have on top of that. But the whole situation is a formula for resentment. Most of the High School Coaches are USA Coaches as well, so the whole culture is tolerated.
Could you imagine a varsity basketball player telling their coach that they were not going to be available for game because it conflicted with an aau game?

Yes I did go to Campbell Co. And yes, my freshman year, we had a club swimmer on our team that qualified for state, and I had never spoken to him before. Only him and I represented CCHS at state, and i had NO IDEA who he was. He was put into events at meets, wouldn't sit with the team, would hang out with his club teammates, and would only talk to us when he was on a relay...
So COME ON is right. It doesn't set up for good team moral when you don't have everyone there for practice. That's where you mold together and become a team.

Could you imagine every high school and middle school basketball team in NKY having a single gym to compete in?
The reality of high school swimming is the lack of high school pools impacts the sport to the point where it really isn't a great prep sport for many of the feelings you are expressing. Teams cant train together, the number of meets is limited, the meets the athletes do attend are overcrowded and the number of events is always limited to a very few. The problem is the lack of high schools with pools, not club athletes, training in the only manner they can to stay competitive.
