2nd Region District Tournaments Preview & Predictions
5th District Tournament @ Trigg County
2/20 6:00 PM #2 Lyon County (18-9) vs. #4 Trigg County (6-19)
The Lady Lyons have put together a nice record considering what they graduated last year. They are still a tough defensive team in the half court and still shoot the ball well. The Lady Cats have had to endure yet another rebuilding season, only capturing region wins against Fort Campbell. Their first 2 matchups saw Lyon County walk away victorious by double digits. I would expect more of the same in this matchup. Lyon County by 10-15 points.
2/20 7:30 PM #1 Crittenden County (23-7) vs. #3 Livingston Central (11-16)
The Lady Rockets have had an outstanding season. They were the All-A Region Champs and even won their 1st round game at All-A State. Livingston Central has been a bit of a disappointment this season. Everyone, including myself, expected them to improve on their 13-14 record from a season ago. Despite returning everyone from a season ago and playing a less challenging schedule, they have struggled. However, they are playing better basketball right now. They have played each other 3 times with Crittenden winning all 3 by 15, 17 and 4 respectively. The Lady Cardinals have closed the gap but expect Crittenden to come out on top in this one. Crittenden County by 8 points.
2/23 7:00 PM Championship
I would expect a 4th matchup of Lyon County and Crittenden County in this one. My prediction is the Lady Rockets add to their impressive resume for 2016-17 and take home the 5th district championship. But it will be a close one over in Cadiz. Crittenden County by 5 points.
6th District Tournament @ Webster County
2/20 7:00 PM #2 Webster County (17-12) vs. #3 Union County (9-19)
The Lady Trojans have weathered a very tough schedule and still managed to post a 17 win season. After their impressive win on the road at Christian County, I believe they are the 2nd best team in the region. The Bravettes on the other hand have endured some rebuilding woes but they have remained competitive. In their first 2 matchups, Webster County walked away with wins of 32 and 20 points. I expect this one to be much closer but the result still the same. Webster County by 10-15 points.
2/22 7:00 PM Championship #1 Henderson County (24-4) vs. Winner of #2/#3
Last year, there was some debate over who was the top team in the region. You could have made a case for as many as 5 different teams. This year, the Lady Colonels have eliminated all debate. Alisha Owens is playing the best basketball of her career and Emma Lander has evolved into a prolific scorer. Combine those 2 stars with the stellar backcourt play they get from Chester and Carter and you get the juggernaunt that is Henderson County. Their first 2 matchups with the Lady Trojans were lopsided victories of 27 and 18 points. Webster County is rolling right now so I expect a much better game this time around, especially since it will be played at Webster County High School. I expect an even tighter contest if they see each other again in the region championship. Henderson County by 10 points.
7th District Tournament @ Madisonville-North Hopkins
2/20 6:00 PM #1 Madisonville-North Hopkins (17-11) vs. #4 Dawson Springs (11-18)
The Lady Maroons have the best post combo in the region and they use them well to control the boards. Molly Stone may be the best rebounder in the state and Kalveona Pepper is a load to handle inside for any team that doesn't have Alisha Owens or Trinitee Jackson. The Lady Panthers have exceeded expectations and solidified their spot of #13 in the region, ahead of Trigg County and Fort Campbell. This was quite an accomplishment for the small school in western Hopkins County. Their first 2 matchups were never close with the Lady Maroons winning by 35 and 28 points. Don't expect any miracles in this one. Madisonville-North Hopkins by 25 points.
2/20 7:45 PM #2 Hopkins County Central (9-19) vs. #3 Caldwell County (17-10)
The Lady Storm are another team that has played a tough schedule. They are better than their record indicates but they have still been a letdown from where everyone expected them to be in the region. The Lady Tigers have put together a good season and are riding 2 big wins into the postseason while the Lady Storm come stumbling in. These 2 teams split their regular season matchups. Caldwell County won the 1st game at home in overtime by 7 points, while Hopkins County Central completely controlled the 2nd game at home with a 17 point win. This will be a close one but I expect the Lady Storm's pressure defense to give the Lady Tigers trouble. Hopkins County Central by 5-8 points.
2/23 7:00 PM Championship
The Lady Maroons won both regular season matchups. The 1st game was a tightly contested game while the 2nd one was a complete blowout. They have the benefit of playing on their home floor and I expect them to win the 3rd matchup in this rivalry. Madisonville-North Hopkins by 12 points.
8th District Tournament @ Hopkinsville
2/20 6:00 PM #1 Christian County (15-12) vs. #4 Fort Campbell (0-25)
The Lady Colonels have played a very tough schedule that has featured the best teams in the 2nd region and the best teams from neighboring regions. They have a great backcourt combo with Aaliyah Hampton and Laderia Gold, but their strength is inside with the emerging Trinitee Jackson. They also have some good role players in Tovah Waddlington and Trinitee Allen to go along with a solid bench. The Lady Falcons on the other hand have struggled mightily. The girls have shown a lot of fight but it is just hard times for Fort Campbell basketball right now. The first 2 matchups were Christian County wins by 37 and 40 points. I expect a similar result in this one. Christian County by 35 points.
2/20 7:30 PM #2 Hopkinsville (20-8) vs. #3 University Heights (14-13)
The Lady Tigers now have back to back 20 win seasons and a very talented and deep roster. Janiya Davis is as good as anyone in the region and 6-3 Zakyra Stallworth is starting to realize her potential. When they are playing hard and playing as a team, they might be the biggest threat to Henderson County. However, playing hard and playing as a team has been their struggle this season. The Lady Blazers have faired about how many expected. Jordon Hornbuckle gets on the boards as hard as anyone you will find and Anshanique Leavell is a great scorer. They have struggled with the size of the Lady Tigers and haven't been able to challenge them in either game. I expect the postseason environment to have them playing their best and make this one the closest of their 3 games. Hopkinsville by 18 points.
2/23 6:00 PM Championship
Expect emotions to be high in this one with how the last game ended in the same gym. This will be the best district tournament game in the region. Not only will bragging rights be on the line but avoiding the chance of playing Henderson County in the 1st round will also be added motivation. I'm predicting 15 or more lead changes and this one will go down to the wire. I'm giving the edge to the home team. Hopkinsville by 2 points.
