Will Covington Catholic be the top team in 5A in 2018?

Page 8 of Without a proven qb they might have a tough season. They do return a good OL, RB and Receivers. Thier defense was really good also. They graduate aroun... 108 comments | 20675 Views | Go to page 1 →

I think South Warren, Bowling Green, and Covington Catholic could all three represent themselves as the number one team in the class. One of those deals where everyone returns quite a bit. I think match up wise that BG could give CCH more problems than South due to being 2-3 deep at every position with a constant supply of speed.

I’m interested in seeing the BG offense. I was told that BG won’t run the ball on SW but that if they can find an aerial attack against SW then they will win. They say that SW will control the line of scrimmage against BG but are susceptible to a strong passing attack.

I definitely think one of those 3 will win state. For now, SW is my pick but that could always change. Lol.

That's likely spot on. That's why in that first game Bowling Green crushed them. They threw for 336 yards. Buchanan was 16/21 with 5 touchdowns. They only had 23 rushes, and some of those were sacks. Fast forward to November when Buchanan was 10/26 for only 89 yards, 1 TD, and 3 INTs. Script flipped completely. From what I remember hearing, it was less what South did in the secondary as it was pressure on the QB that caused those issues.

The question moving forward is, which was the more likely scenario for this year? The Bowling Green offense that rolled South up in the first time with an aerial assault? Or the one that couldn't block anyone that sputtered to less than 25% of the previous passing output? Spartan fans usually bristle at the suggestion but they have historically been attackable through the air, and Bowling Green is a team that does precisely that. It may all come down to the offensive line play, because I expect Buchanan to continue his progression, just like Spurrier. And while I've no doubt they've got capable runners to replace Winn, it is not an insignificant loss in his graduation. Dude carried the ball 59 times between the two games. Counting sacks, the whole rest of the team ran the ball 15 times combined. They absolutely don't win that game without him. Who is stepping into his shoes to be the workhorse this time?
