Foolish question for the Colonel :
Why couldn't someone enrolled at St. Henry play football at Cov Cath???????
- Jul 18, 12, 02:29 PM #22
I believe a big part of the reason is the administration at St. Henry. I don't think Principal Dave Otte has any interest in football. I don't think he wants football there. If the next Principal has any interest in boosting enrollment and football, I could see it being pursued. As long as Otte is there, I doubt it. Someone please correct me if they think I am wrong because that is just a gut feeling and is not based on any inside information.

There is more than football that kids attend CovCath from outside of the feeder schools.
I know more than handful of kids that that made there decisions based partly on the lunches.
Many kids and parents like the all male format, and the work required in the classroom.
Also if football is part of the decision, many kids are in the middle school program and are connect to CovCath by the 5th or 6th grade.
St. Henry's not only would they need to start a high school program, but also a middle school.
So I disagree that St. Henry's would have a large affected on CovCath football, Holy Cross didn't.

Not to be silly but how not?
Just like in the NewCath situation, there is a financial component to that, that no one wants to talk about. At the end of the day St. Henry is just a pawn in a bigger chess game.

I applied for a gig at St. Henry's a few years back (about 7 or 8 years ago now) and asked about starting football. I was told directly that it is a money issue. The cost to refurbish facilities to incorporate football, equipment and travel costs were all prohibitive for the school. St. Henry's is not a financial powerhouse, so the costs were a major factor. I was also told that the troubles Bishop Brossart had when they started with getting coaches, facilities and kids to commit to the program were a factor because St. Henry's did not want to go through similar struggles.

^ St. Henry is a much bigger school so getting players would be no issue at all IMO. Secondly, most people tell me that football generates revenue. Third, don't schools get a boost in enrollment with football that also brings in revenue? No doubt there would be start up cost but I think it would be revenue positive in rather short order.

To say it the reason not to start football is b/c it would hurt soccer and cross country is dumb. It may pull kids away from soccer, but who can honestly say they know someone who would've played football if there was a team but since there wasn't they settled for cross country? What about schools that added soccer well after the football program was started? Brossart seems to be staying strong in non-football boys sports. Yes I know they are quite bad in football. Why is it fair for prospective football players to just be content sitting in the stands?
