The only problem I have with the thread is this: the game happened in the winter of 1993, which was my senior year. I'd like to OT call that Way Back When. Thanks.

I was at that game, my brother QB'd the Bardstown team. River had flooded and the field was frozen solid. One of coldest games I have ever been to. Fulton Co. ran dive to Mancel Elam all night long but couldn't get it in. Bardstown broke a long TD run late in game to win it.

Very familiar with that Bardstown bunch. They had beat Garrard County by one the week before when Garrard missed a field goal at the end of the game. Class A was loaded that year.

I went to that game, and we were the home team that year so we had the covered side of old cardinal stadium. Before the game was over, almost the entire fan base from Pburg was also under the covered side because it was pouring down rain.
I thought the Blackcats were the biggest high school team I had ever seen...they looked like college players. I thought we were in trouble right then. We stayed behind most all the game 12-0, and that was because Pburg missed two extra points that were not even close...HORRIBLE kicking game, and it cost them the title because the Big Red Machine roared back to take a 13-12 lead late in the game.
Pburg drove down the field with time running out, but a big play was negated by a penalty, and their only hope was to kick very long field goal....we were already celebrating because we knew their kicker could not make an extra point. Well, they had an amazing QB, and he attempted the field goal. When he kicked it...I'll be honest, I thought it was right between the uprights...it looked really good, but then I saw the officials waving their arms, the real celebration was on...we danced in the pouring down rain and we didn't even care. Great memory.

Good recap tewnty4seven. I was there too and Mayfield really showed a lot of grit in coming back. I remember the rain and the Prestonsburg faithful being furious about the penalty call, holding if I recall. I don't remember all the details you do, but if we had been involved directly I am sure I would.

Pburgh had some help in that game against Danville because of the rain and mud, it was a mighty upset. Mayfield got some help in that game against Pburgh when they fumbled a snap on a punt near the goal line. There was a call against Pburgh late in the game.

I've always said this was Mayfield's most unlikey state title. But I have always thought that they should have beaten Danville a few times in those epic state title games.
Yes, Webster Co was one of the losses that year. I remember thinking it was bad losing to Fulton, even though they were pretty good that year, but, when we lost to Webster, also, I thought we were in for a very long year. Actually, Webster ended up being a pretty good team that year, too, but, at the time, who knew either were going to be very good.

Actually Webster was not one of our losses that year. Played them twice that year. First meeting we won 10-7 and then again in the 3rd round of the playoffs winning 14-0. The 93 Cards record after 5 games was 2-3. Lost to Fulton County, beat Webster County, lost to Graves County, beat Sikeston, and then lost to Paducah in that order. The 6th game started district play and we never lost a game after that. 6 out of the 10 games remaining The Redbirds held their opponents scoreless. Twenty4seven is correct about Prestonburg going up 12-0 in the pouring down rain. The Redbirds then scored back to back TD's late in the game to take the lead 13-12 and that would be the final. After starting 2-3 that year we turned the season around to win a state title. Our record was 12-3.

Thank you, I know we have never lost to Webster County. I just got done looking this up myself.

Anytime any of you want to watch a replay just go to Mayfieldcardinals.net and go to the media center and just select the year and game its that easy. Very popular with all but Bw fans currently. That said.....

93 was a surprise for Mf who charged into that game as a underdog just as they had every big game all season due to it being dubbed as a reloading year. It was Coach Paul Leahy's first year as coach after having served as an assistant coach at Mf for 20 sum odd years. At the time I was there after having just graduated from UK and ran into a group of Pburg friends and told them that I was just proud of this team for making it this far. Apparently everyone but the Cards players felt the same. Mf's super sophomore Cephus Tyler was a man-child and just .....well watch the video and make your own call on Tyler but he was the difference. I woulf to this day hate to meet him in any alley
Wow that it awesome! Lost 21-18 to Mayfield in Final4 in 91. Never seen that game. Will now! Ironically we lost regional championship the next year to Pburg coached by Bill Letton. Couldn't stand him because I lost last game to him. Fast forward to 2005 we were eating Thanksgiving dinner together before shutting Highlands out. Went on to win state. He then won it as a head coach. I think that speaks volumes to what a great career Coach Letton has had. He is a fine man too!
Can tell you from playing the "touchdown twins" Dwayne Garza and Seth Hyden that the were arguably the best tandem I ever played against.

I may have caused some confusion, not all our games are up, he adds the games as he has time but he has focused on adding the biggest games first like state title games.

I think I have it, 2 years or so ago I ran across a VHS that had a 3 of that years games and I think it was one. Now if I can figure out where I stuck it you are in business. I need to get that converted to a DVD before it gives it up
