On the surface, I agree with those that say a recruiting service is not needed because the parent/player can do the same things. But, I have to admit that some, not all, recruiting services can do what the parent/player can do in a much more timely manner and send information to many more schools. If a player wants to attend only a set number of schools, the parent/player can do everything. If a player wants to play and doesn't really care where, you may need a agency.

When my son was being recruited, he went to the camps/combines and we sent video and profiles to schools. It worked well, but toward the middle of his recruiting, we hired an agency, not NCSA, and they contacted many more schools then we ever could have. In fact, they contacted schools that we had never even heard of from California to Maine. My son received contact, invites and offers from schools that we would have never even contacted. D1, D2, D3 and NAIA schools contacted him and offered him. Ultimately, the service did not play a role in his college choice because he ended up choosing Georgetown, a school that we had already established contact with. But, at the time, we did not know where he would end up and he gained a lot of contacts and offers from the recruiting agency.

In the end, you can do what is needed, but if you want to reach more schools and make sure you have done everything possible to make his name known, you may have to go with a service. The big name players that blow people away at combines and camps will probably not need a service, but the majority of players that want to play and earn money for college may need the help of an agency.
