Mountain Football Notebook (10/28/14)
With district play ending, a lot of teams punched their ticket to the playoffs while other teams found themselves sitting out of the playoffs with just one game left to go, lets recap the action from the mountains.
1. Estill County 26, Garrard County 22
The Engineers made their trip to Lancaster on Friday night to take on the Garrard County Golden Lions with a lot on the line, if Garrard won then they would have won the out right district championship, if Estill won then it became a 3 way tie for first second and third with Bourbon, Estill and Garrard.
Garrard county would get on the scoreboard first and would lead 8-0 after one courtesy of a 65 yard touchdown run by Devan Logan, Logan also ran in the two point conversion.
Second quarter would be all Estill County as the Engineers would score twice. Trevor Jones with a 23 yard run made it 8-6 Garrard with Estill failing the two point conversion attempt. Trevor Jones and Logan Edmonson connected with a 8 yard touchdown pass making it 13-8 Estill with Levi Tipton’s XP kick.
Estill would get things started in the third with a 48 yard touchdown run by Chipper Hitchcock and Estill took a 19-8 lead, missing the extra point kick but Garrard says no so fast as Devan Logan takes it 67 yards to the house, making it 19-14 Estill but on Estill’s very next possession and first play from scrimmage, Trevor Jones takes it 72 yards to the house on the QB keeper, making it 26-14 Estill. Devan Logan would answer again with a 49 yard touchdown run making it 26-22 Estill after the two point conversion and it would stay that way until the fourth and final quarter.
Garrard County would have the ball 3 times late in the game inside Estill’s 20 yard line and failed to score on every single possession as the Engineer defense stood tall.
Estill County improves to 7-2 and will host McCreary Central on Halloween night.
Garrard County falls to 7-2 and will host West Jessamine on Halloween night.
2. Hazard 42, Pineville 6
The Bulldogs made the trip to Pineville looking to win their 8th consecutive district championship while the Pineville Mountain Lions were looking to upset the Bulldogs.
Senior running back Brandon Jones would get the Dawgs on the scoreboard first with a 37 yard touchdown run, Tyler Collins kick made it 7-0 Hazard and the Bulldogs wouldn’t look back from there as Jones would put them up 14-0 with a 10 yard run.
Jones would put Hazard up 21-0 in the second quarter with a 35 yard touchdown run.
Jones would put Hazard up 28-0 in the third quarter, this time from 25 yards out. Zack Hoskins would pick up a fumble and return it 4 yards making it 35-0 Hazard. Pineville would finally get on the scoreboard with a 2 yard run by Tuck Woolum, making it 35-6 Hazard.
Jones would seal the deal with his 5th touchdown run on the night, coming from 53 yards out, making what would be the final score, Hazard 42-6.
Hazard wins their 8th consecutive district championship and improves to 7-2 and will travel to Sheldon Clark on Halloween Night.
Pineville falls to 5-4 and will travel to Williamsburg on Halloween night.
3. Johnson Central 42, Ashland 7
The Golden Eagles would welcome in the Ashland Tomcats, putting their 8 game winning streak on the line while Ashland was looking to upset the Golden Eagles.
Johnson Central would score first and wouldn’t look back as they would roll to a 42-7 victory.
Johnson Central improves to 9-0 and will host Belfry on Halloween Night.
Ashland falls to 5-4 and will be off on Halloween night to get ready for the playoffs.
4. Pikeville 41, Allen Central 0
Daric Pugh and his Pikeville Panthers would make the trip up to Allen Central to take on the Rebels in the final district game of the 2014 season. The Panthers looking to stay undefeated while the Rebels looking to upset the Panthers.
Pikeville would get on the scoreboard and roar to a 41-0 win. Daric Pugh finishes the game with 3 rushing touchdowns (14, 8, 77).
Pikeville improves to 9-0 and will host Russell on Halloween night.
Allen Central falls to 2-7 and will host Knott County Central on Halloween night.
