Mayfield/Warren Central Predictions
This is the first game of the year for these two teams that are both ranked high in each of their class's. This will be a very tough game for Mayfield and will show us what what kind of squad we have and what we need to work on. I'm hoping Mayfield can hang in there and possibly sneek out a victory but a well played game with no injuries will be nice to have also.

Warren Central is a top 5 5A team. Mayfield is a top 5 1A team. This should not be close. Warren Central 42-21.

I don't know what the score will be, but I don't think Central will lose. My guess right now is 2 TDs. Thinking more of a 28-14 game.

This will be a tough one for Mayfield, the young line will need to really step up for the Cards to have a chance and that will be asking alot this early but we are acustom to this type challenge and more often than not it has somehow worked out for us so I am hopeful but I certainly think the WC is easily the favorite. I do think we have a decent chance if that young line is able to play with few mistakes. THe Cardinal skill guys should be pretty good this year. Not yet sure what our defense will do but they were impressive against state runner up #2 Milan, TN who defeated defending TN 5A state champ Henry Co Friday night in a scrimmage for whatever that is worth

I keep hearing how Mayfield is 'accustomed' to this type of challenge. I just don't see it. The last time they played a team like Warren Central (larger school that is a top 5 team) was all the way back in 2006 against Hoptown. When Mayfield has stepped up in class it is usually against the larger slower programs in Western Ky (Graves, Marshall, Greenwood, etc.) Warren Central mops the floor with those teams when they have played them.
If this game is close, i'll view it as more of an indictment of Warren Central than the greatness of Mayfield. Good 5A teams should soundly beat good 1A teams.

If Mayfield plays with or beats WC does that mean WC has no shot at the 5A state title? And does this mean no school in 1A has a chance?

I guess they technically would still have a shot. But any 5A championship calibar team should not lose to a class A school (albeit a very good Class A school). I know the Mayfield contingent believes they can play with anyone, but it is a different level of football comparing Mayfield to Warren Central, BG, John Hardin, Christian Co., etc. Just more players, more athletes, more coaches, more everything.

Not at all. Mayfield is considered the preseason favorite to win 1A. Again, I think it would be more of an indictment that Warren Central is not the 5A challenger that a lot of people think them to be. I'm anxiously awaiting the outcome of this game. Dragons by 21.

More sometimes doesnt equal better. I'm not saying that Mayfield will beat WC this year, I do think the 2010 team would. So, sometimes small schools can get the right mix and play with the big schools. I'm not saying Trinity, ect. WC may wax Mayfield and if they do , hats off and we will have to adjust. I believe the main two advantages WC has are at the line and QB play. Bush is considered one of the top players in the state. I saw WC play Trousdale last year and I thought we would have been more competive than them. I am interested in this game because it will tell us what we got and what we need to work on. In 2004 Mayfield played Evansville North and their atheletes were just too much for us for a whole game, the same in 2007 against Fort Campbell. I hope too just keep it close with no injuries.

You say Mayfield would have been more competitive with Warren Central than Trousdale last year, yet the Cardinals struggled with Greenwood. There is a ton of respect for Mayfield in all of Kentucky. They are one of the most prestigious programs in the entire state. But very few times do they play teams in W Kentucky that have the same athleticism as they do, much less a 5A program that will have more and bigger athletes than them. I may be completely off base, but I just think Warren Central will be too much for them. I agree that WC's line play is where they will beat the Cards soundly. Bush is more of a game manager than a productive passing QB.

Mayfield would have been more competitive than Trousdale in all likelihood, but also consider that Greenwood and Graves County played Mayfield within two TDs, and Central ran both of those teams off the field. I believe this WC team will be better defensively than last year, but will likely take a step back offensively, at least at the start.

You may well be right, At this point I am not real sure what to expect.
"Accustomed" comes from a long standing tradition of getting past the big boys. THe only 2 big boys in WKY that have a winning record against Mayfield is Hoptown who holds a 32-30-2 advantage and PT who holds a 42-46-10 advanage. BG, Christian, FC, Henderson, FC and Owensboro do not. The past 3 years we have been able to play with the big boys in my opinion but we went through a spell prior from 2003 through 2008 where we likely could not play with the big boys of WKY. Can this years team play with the bigs? I don't know but clearly we are the underdog and Rogers was fairly successful against Mayfield while at Graves. Historically, we have managed to do well so I never count us out

You are right about the tradition of Mayfield, it is second to none. I know they are 11-1 all time against BG. Of course the last time they played was 1967.

Mayfield had a young new qb who was still grasping the position. Mayfield had no pass game at all at that point and finally just ran Jackson straight at them (227 yards, the most he has ever ran for) The qb began to come into his own a little later in the season. Graves is a huge rival game where anything can and sometimes does happen.

I know you're bowing out until Friday, I just wanted to point out that if Mayfield had a reason they struggled with Greenwood in that first game, then it stands to reason the same struggles would have been a problem for them against Central in that same game.
I wish you luck on Friday. But not too much.

I dont know if struggled is the right word for the Mayfield/Greenwood game last year. I never felt like we were going to lose but that we just played ugly.
