Lafayette Generals

Head Coach – Eric Shaw (1st Season)
2012: 7-4, District Champions, Lost to Louisville Male first round

The Generals will be under new leadership in 2013. Coach Carl Hayden has accepted a new position in the Fayette County school system and will not be at the helm in 2013. Assistant Eric Shaw was named as head coach in mid-summer. By naming Shaw as head coach the administration seems to have confidence in the foundation established by Hayden. The Generals were impressive in 2012 going undefeated in their district. They had the unfortunate timing of being paired with Louisville’s ‘Super District’ in the first round.

Schedule

Lafayette’s District 8 rivals include George Rogers Clark, Madison Central and Tates Creek. Lafayette will also face in town rivals from District 7 in 6A games. The Generals also play the Lexington Catholic Knights in a game that is known as the ‘Backyard Brawl’ since the schools are only about a mile apart.

Outlook

Lafayette’s offense was heavily slanted to the pass in 2012 with a senior quarterback and a number of senior receivers. Clay Bolin will likely take over at the quarterback position and he will have to synch up with a mostly new set of receivers. Expect the Generals to use Kaylen Nelson even more than last year. Nelson averaged over a 100 yards a game last year. Blocking for Nelson will be UK commit Landon Young. Young is only a sophomore and has already committed to stay in town when he graduates. If the pass game jells early in the season the Generals will have one of most potent offenses in the state.

On the defensive side the Generals should be able to keep opposing quarterbacks in check with lots of speed. Kaylan Nelson goes both way playing cornerback. He will be joined by Mason Alstatt and Toryan Whiting. Each of these DBs had 2 interceptions in the 2012 season and held opponents to an average of less than 100 yards a game in passing.

Players to Watch

Kaylan Nelson, RB/CB. 5’ 11” 180 lbs., Senior – Nelson averaged over 100 yards per game in 2012. He has offers from mid-majors and will likely pickup more.

Landon Young, Lineman, 6’ 7” 250 lbs. Sophomore – Young is only a sophomore but he caught the eye of incoming in coming UK coach Mark Stoops. The lineman has already committed to UK.

Clay Bolin, QB, 6’ 1”, Sophomore – Same name, same position, different school. Clay is the younger brother of BGP All-State QB and Louisville QB Kyle Bolin. Bolin is on the radar at the college level and should get a chance to establish himself this year for the Generals.
