It has to be harder to create what you think the news really is, but I don't think reporters would be rewarded for just reporting!

Editorials, comments and observations are in just about every paper but you never read about "who should be the boss at XYZ company" but you will see the brew getting stirred, in sports and politics.

I think that the paper can write what ever they want to. Maybe some people are and some dont but thats the way everything goes.

It comes across as tabloid-type journalism to me.

You are correct, some do and most papers, sports writers, editors, news staff are very good and repuatable.

Than again, things like this happen and the entire paper is being looked upon and it's now affected everyone that works there, I'm sure.

Comments in print, are not capable of being taken back once read and people form opinions regarding those same comments.

I would be interested in what TomSportsHack's comments would be on the subject. He generally has a pretty good scoop on Pike County high school sports.

Personally , I think it is Bush League.

The web site is controlled by the business side of the paper, not news side. I have no control over it at all and have no say in what's placed in the poll segment. I don't even have access to it to place breaking news on the site.

By the time I got to the office at 4 p.m. Friday, the poll in question had long since been removed.

We agree: the wrong decision was made in placing that poll on the web site. On behalf of the Appalachian News-Express, I apologize to anyone who may have been offended by that decision.

It is good to know that you did not have anything to do with this. I feel the same as the others, these are just children who are trying to play a "GAME" and a newspaper should never run such a poll. Good Luck to the Panthers in the playoffs.

Even if youre name was in the paper saying that an overwhelming majority of the town did not want you to play? The saying "theres no such thing as bad press" only applies to showbiz not high school football. Another ? Would you cut that newspaper clipping that said that out and save it for the scrapbook for your kids and grandkids to see? I DONT THINK SO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What the news express did was bush league stuff IMO. How ever the poll goes its going to alienate one and put an INSANE amount of pressure on the other. I sure hope Rick Bentley (sports columnist for ANE) didnt have anything to do with that ive always repsected him. I hope any self respecting MAROON bleeder like myself didnt vote on that stupid poll.

IMO, it was in bad taste. That said, "children" having their feelings hurt is a part of life. These are young men who know by now how the world works.

The important thing is to win the game as a team. It has to be tuff on Huffman, it being his senior year, but he is a very good athlete and still needs to play well to help his team win. Football is a TEAM sport.

Being in a profession that constantly receives press...esp. bad press....let's all remember what any newspaper's true job is......to sell newspapers....that will in turn bring in more advertising dollars....Reporting the news is not....

This is why it is becoming harder to get kids to play as a team. Did this same paper run a poll on who should run the ball the most for Belfry last year? I don't think so. Let Coach Jackson coach. (the parents and community probably care more who starts QB than does the kids--Just a guess). Let the kids play ball.
